AirTags are designed to remain findable while they have power, but they do not provide continuous GPS tracking or a nonstop live location feed. They use Bluetooth, and a nearby Apple device must detect an AirTag and relay its approximate location through the Find My network. Whether and when that happens depends on the tag being detectable and on network conditions.
What “always on” means for an AirTag
Apple lists Bluetooth for AirTag proximity finding. In Apple’s explanation of offline finding, a missing device sends short-range Bluetooth signals that nearby Apple devices can detect; those devices can then use their internet connection to relay an approximate location. Apple describes the network as a crowdsourced system of over a billion Apple devices, not a guarantee that one will be near a particular AirTag at any moment. That means an AirTag is not a GPS tracker that independently calculates and uploads a continuous route, and the cited specifications do not describe it as having its own mobile-data connection. Apple’s security guide says, “Find My works offline by sending out short range Bluetooth signals from the missing device that can be detected by other Apple devices in use nearby.” The nearby devices relay an approximate location; the AirTag itself is not continuously reporting a live position. Why the location may not be current
Being powered and ready to be found is different from being visible on the map at all times. For the network to update an AirTag’s location, it needs to be detected by a nearby participating Apple device and the relay process must work. If no usable update arrives, Find My may show a last known location rather than a current one.

Apple says Find My can show a last known location for up to seven days when it cannot show the current location. If more than seven days pass without a location being sent through the network, the app displays “No location found.” That status does not by itself establish that the AirTag has been destroyed or is permanently unreachable; it means Find My has no location to show under those conditions. Finding an AirTag nearby
When you are close to an AirTag, nearby-finding features can help beyond the network’s approximate map location. Apple lists Ultra Wideband hardware and a built-in speaker in its AirTag specifications. Precision Finding availability depends on having a compatible Apple device and on the circumstances; it is distinct from the approximate location relayed by nearby devices.

Model details matter: Apple’s current AirTag (2nd generation) specifications list a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, while the prior model’s specifications list Apple’s U1 Ultra Wideband chip. Do not assume that a particular iPhone or feature works with every AirTag generation; check Apple’s current compatibility information for device-specific requirements. AirTag uses a user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. It cannot keep operating after that battery is depleted. Apple’s battery-life estimate is based on everyday use of sound and Precision Finding, and the company says actual results vary with usage, environmental conditions, battery manufacturer, and other factors. Its published testing for AirTag (2nd generation) used preproduction units in December 2025 paired with specified iPhone models; that test does not guarantee a particular duration in everyday use. Privacy and unwanted-tracking safeguards
Apple says Find My location relaying is designed to be anonymous, end-to-end encrypted, and efficient with battery and data. Its security guide also says offline-finding identifiers change approximately every 15 minutes. That is the documented rotation of identifiers—not a schedule promising a location update every 15 minutes. These protections do not mean misuse is impossible.
Apple says a notification may appear when an AirTag separated from its owner is detected moving with someone over time. A separated AirTag may also make a sound when moved after being apart from its owner for a period. If you find an unknown AirTag that may be tracking you, Apple’s instructions explain how to play a sound, use Find Nearby with a supported iPhone, identify the AirTag with an NFC-capable phone, and disable it. Disabling the AirTag stops its owner from receiving updates on its current location. Turning off Bluetooth or Location Services on your own phone does not disable someone else’s AirTag.

If you feel unsafe, Apple advises going to a safe public location and contacting law enforcement. Follow the steps in Apple’s instructions for detecting and disabling an unknown AirTag.
