Are All-in-One Computers Worth Buying? How to Decide

An all-in-one computer can make a neat, simple desktop setup, but its integrated screen and model-specific upgrade options are real tradeoffs. Use this guide to decide whether an AIO, tower, or laptop fits your needs.

All-in-one (AIO) computers are worth considering when you want a tidy desktop with a built-in screen and do not expect to change components often. They are a less suitable fit if you prioritize upgrades, component-level repairs, demanding performance, or the freedom to replace your monitor independently. The right choice depends on your workload, space, portability needs, and the exact model—not simply its form factor.

What an all-in-one computer gives you

An AIO houses the computer and display in one enclosure, reducing separate equipment and simplifying setup. The tradeoff is that the screen is integrated into the computer rather than being a standalone monitor you can swap out independently. HP’s category explainer describes the design and its relationship to a traditional desktop, but it is manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative testing: HP: What is an All-In-One Computer?

When an AIO is a good fit

An AIO can suit everyday browsing, documents, video calls, and shared home or office spaces where a compact, straightforward setup matters. It may also be a reasonable desktop choice when you do not need to move the computer around and expect to keep its screen and core configuration together.

For creative work, gaming, or other demanding tasks, do not assume that every AIO is either inadequate or equivalent to a tower. Check the exact model’s processor, graphics, memory, cooling, and compatibility with the software you use. Lenovo’s guidance discusses workloads and configuration differences, but does not establish a benchmark result for a particular machine: Lenovo: Exploring Good All-in-One PCs for 2025.

When a tower or laptop makes more sense

Choose a desktop tower when flexibility matters

A tower paired with a separate monitor is worth comparing if you want more room to change, tune, repair, or replace components over time. You can also replace the monitor without replacing the computer. Microsoft identifies upgradeability and long-term value among desktop considerations; actual value still depends on the system and its total cost: Microsoft: Desktop, laptop, tablet: Which is right for you?

Choose a laptop when the computer must travel

An AIO is still a desktop: its screen and computer share an enclosure, but that does not make it a portable substitute for a laptop. If you need to take your computer between locations, compare laptops instead.

Check upgrades and display options before buying

Upgradeability varies by model. Some configurations may allow memory or storage changes, while other components may be difficult or impractical to replace. Do not assume that the CPU, graphics, or memory can be upgraded just because the product is called a desktop. Consult the exact model’s specifications and service documentation before purchase; Lenovo’s buying guidance also advises checking individual configurations.

If you might need another or larger screen, verify the AIO’s video outputs and external-display support for the exact SKU. An external monitor can provide an additional display or a different screen size when supported, but it does not turn the built-in display into a separately replaceable component. Confirm port type and display capability in the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming all AIOs support the same setup.

Include repair and service in the decision

Repair routes depend on the manufacturer, product, coverage, and region. Apple says Apple retail stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers offer Apple-certified repairs using genuine Apple parts; its support page also distinguishes authorized from non-authorized service. Microsoft describes warranty and service pathways, authorized providers in some regions, and self-repair materials for selected devices and skilled technicians. Neither source establishes a universal repair cost or repairability rating for AIOs.

For a specific computer, check its warranty terms, service options, and parts guidance for your market before buying. Apple also publishes parts support information for iMac: Apple Support: Parts Support for iMac.

Use this checklist to make your choice

  • Applications and operating system: Confirm the computer runs the software you need.
  • Workload: Match the exact CPU, graphics, memory, and cooling to your tasks, especially for gaming or creative work.
  • Desk and mobility: Consider whether the integrated setup suits your space—or whether you need a computer you can carry.
  • Screen: Check size, resolution, external-display support, and whether you want to replace the display separately.
  • Connections and storage: Review ports, memory, storage, and the peripherals you plan to use.
  • Future changes and service: Read model-specific upgrade, repair, warranty, and support information.
  • Total cost: Compare the complete AIO setup with a tower and monitor, including any warranty or service coverage you may want.

Microsoft’s overview of device types can help frame that choice, while manufacturer listings and support documents are the place to confirm the details of a particular model. Prices, configurations, and service availability can change by region and over time.
