It can mean access is restricted, a model is being deprecated, a particular app has removed it, or an API endpoint has been shut down. What happens to existing chats, custom assistants, or software depends on the provider, product, exact model identifier, and platform.
What does an AI model “pause” mean?
Providers do not use “pause” as a universal lifecycle term. A model that disappears from a consumer app may still be available through an API. A model limited to some existing users may still be supported. A deprecation notice may announce a future change rather than an immediate shutdown.

Google’s Gemini API documentation distinguishes the announcement from the actual endpoint closure: deprecation means support is ending; shutdown means the model is turned off and its endpoint is unavailable. The dates on its schedule may be the earliest possible shutdown dates, with the exact date communicated in advance. A listing marked “No shutdown date announced” means no date has been announced—not that access is guaranteed permanently. Google’s Gemini API deprecation schedule
Anthropic uses more explicit lifecycle labels. “Active” models are supported and recommended; “Legacy” models are no longer updated and may later be deprecated; “Deprecated” models still work but are no longer recommended and have a replacement and retirement date; “Retired” models are unavailable, and requests to them fail. These are provider-specific definitions, not an industry-wide standard. Anthropic’s model lifecycle documentation

What happens to existing access, chats, and integrations?
Consumer apps and conversations
Removing a model from an app does not necessarily delete conversations made with it, nor does it necessarily remove related features. OpenAI’s Help Center says GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, o4-mini, GPT-5 Instant and Thinking were retired in ChatGPT on February 13, 2026; GPT-5.1 Instant, Thinking, and Pro followed on March 11, 2026. OpenAI says conversations and projects were defaulted to newer GPT equivalents, and GPTs that used retired models automatically moved to the closest stated equivalents. The notice treats Voice and ChatGPT Images as separate from the retirement of the text GPT-4o model. Some of the retired ChatGPT models remained available through the API. API integrations and deployments
For an API, a retirement can mean requests using the old model identifier stop succeeding on the stated date. Anthropic says retired-model requests fail. Do not assume that an app migration or a replacement model will happen automatically: read the notice for the exact model and endpoint you call.

OpenAI maintains a separate API deprecations schedule from its ChatGPT product notices. For example, its page says Assistants API developers were notified in August 2025 about removal on August 26, 2026, and points to the Responses API and Conversations API as the migration path. This is an API feature lifecycle, not proof that a ChatGPT model or every related API model has the same status. OpenAI API deprecations

Google says access to Gemini 2.5 models is limited to people who actively used them in the past, while also stating that the models are not deprecated and will continue to be served through the API until further notice. This is an example of access being restricted without an announced shutdown. Whether a particular account still qualifies depends on the provider’s terms and eligibility rules. Can the same model have different retirement dates?
Yes. The model provider’s own API and a managed cloud service can have separate schedules. Anthropic says its published dates apply to Anthropic-operated platforms; Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud set their own retirement schedules. If you access a model through a cloud partner, use that platform’s notice and model identifier rather than assuming the provider’s date applies. Anthropic’s model lifecycle documentation
How to protect an existing workflow
- Identify the exact surface and identifier. Check whether your use is in a consumer app, a direct API, or a managed cloud platform. Record the model name or snapshot and the endpoint, if applicable.
- Read the matching provider notice. Check the status, effective or earliest possible date, replacement guidance, and what happens to current chats, custom assistants, or deployments. Treat “no date announced” as an absence of a published date, not a promise of indefinite support.
- Find every dependency. Audit applications, services, and API keys that call the model. Anthropic documents usage exports that can be broken down by key and model, which can help locate affected workloads.
- Test a replacement before production migration. Run representative tasks against the proposed replacement and check output quality and application behavior. A suggested successor is not a guarantee of identical results.
- Update and verify before retirement. Change the model identifier or endpoint as directed, then confirm the workload succeeds on the replacement. For partner-hosted access, check the partner’s schedule as well.
Anthropic says it notifies customers with active deployments and provides at least 60 days’ notice before retirement of publicly released models. That is Anthropic’s stated policy, not a general guarantee for all providers or platforms. Anthropic’s model lifecycle documentation
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does retirement mean the model is gone forever?
Not necessarily, but endpoint availability and preservation of model weights are different things. Anthropic says it has committed to long-term preservation of model weights and other measures, and hopes to make past models publicly available again at some point. That commitment does not mean a retired API endpoint remains usable, that the weights will be released, or that other providers preserve retired models. Anthropic on preserving model weights

Official materials from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic do not establish how often AI models are paused or retired across the industry. For a specific model, verify its current status, account eligibility, region and platform in the provider’s latest documentation; schedules and notices can change.
