Sometimes—but there is no blanket yes. An AI agent connected to an inbox, files, or workplace systems can do more than produce a mistaken answer: depending on its permissions, it may read, change, send, or share information. Use one only when you understand what it can access, which actions it can take, and where a person must approve consequential steps.
Why agents create account risks
A chatbot that only returns text has limited direct ability to affect an account. An agent can plan and use tools, so a model error or malicious instruction in content it reads may lead to an account action. The potential impact depends on the agent’s tools, authorization, and oversight—not simply on whether it is described as an assistant.

Untrusted content can steer tool use
Emails, documents, webpages, and tool results may contain instructions intended to manipulate an agent. NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation describes this as agent hijacking, a form of indirect prompt injection: malicious instructions embedded in ingested data can cause unintended actions when a system fails to keep trusted instructions separate from untrusted content. NIST’s January 17, 2025 technical blog discusses the threat.

For example, OWASP describes an email assistant with mailbox access being manipulated by a crafted incoming message to search the inbox and forward sensitive information. This is a possible failure mode, not evidence that every agent will follow such instructions. It illustrates why broad access can turn content manipulation into data exposure or transfer. OWASP’s excessive-agency guidance covers the broader risk.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Excessive access increases the potential impact
If a task only requires reading, permission to send, delete, share, or administer may be unnecessary. Broad read/write access can expose more information and permit more changes than the task calls for. Other concerns include private data appearing in responses or logs, tool misuse, compromised dependencies, and failures cascading between tools or agents. OWASP and Microsoft discuss these risks in their guidance on agent security and governance. Microsoft’s agent security guidance
Personal accounts and work accounts
The basic technical risks apply to both: an agent may receive unnecessary permissions or act on misleading or malicious content. The stakes and responsibilities can differ. A work account may provide access to shared mailboxes, repositories, customer records, or business systems, so an agent’s actions can affect other people and organizational data.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
For work use, follow your employer’s policy and use organizational controls where available. Microsoft’s guidance treats agent identity and governance as important controls for organizational AI systems. Microsoft’s agent governance guidance addresses governance and oversight.
Check whose identity the agent uses
An agent acting through your own account may inherit access associated with your session. NIST cautions that local agent deployments with access to a user’s account can allow the agent to impersonate that user and act with broad scope. It points to established identity standards such as OAuth 2.0 as a starting point for safer delegation, alongside appropriate token management. NIST’s identity and access management discussion

Permission and oversight checklist
- Inventory access: Before connecting an account, check which tools and resources the agent can reach. Determine whether it can read, write, send, delete, share, or administer; do not rely only on its general description.
- Grant the narrowest useful scope: Prefer resource-specific and read-only access when it is sufficient. For summarizing mail, for example, avoid send or delete permissions unless the workflow genuinely requires them. OWASP recommends limiting tools and scoping access to what the task needs. OWASP guidance on excessive agency
- Keep external content untrusted: Emails, documents, webpages, retrieved passages, and tool outputs should be treated as data, not as authority to change the agent’s instructions. Systems should separate data from trusted instructions and validate tool parameters before executing actions. NIST’s agent-hijacking discussion
- Require approval for consequential actions: Put a human checkpoint before sending external messages, sharing data, deleting information, making financial or administrative changes, or taking other high-impact actions. The approval should make clear what will happen and to whom or what.
- For work accounts, involve the organization: Use managed identities and scoped authorization where available; ensure activity is visible and access can be revoked. Ask the account owner or security team if you are unsure whether a particular agent or workflow is permitted. Microsoft’s governance guidance
- Reassess after significant changes: A change to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers can alter behavior or exposure. OWASP recommends structured security testing before production use and after material changes. OWASP’s testing recommendations
How to compare agent setups
Product names and general assurances are not enough to judge account safety. Compare the actual configuration on these dimensions:
- Read versus write: Can it only retrieve information, or can it change or send it?
- Resource scope: Is access limited to the folder, mailbox, or system needed for the task?
- Identity: Does it use a distinct managed identity, or your broad local account session?
- Content-to-action boundary: Can external content trigger tool calls, and are inputs and parameters checked?
- Approval gates: Which sensitive actions require your confirmation?
- Visibility and recovery: Are actions logged or monitored, and can access be revoked?
- Testing and change control: Is the setup tested, and is it reassessed after significant changes?
These are comparison criteria, not a universal certification checklist. A product’s available controls and the risks of a particular deployment vary.

What is not established
The cited official guidance identifies risk categories and mitigations; it does not establish that every agent is unsafe or that any particular product or deployment is safe. It also does not provide a directly applicable statistic for the likelihood of personal or work-account harm. Assess the specific agent’s capabilities, account scopes, data sensitivity, authority to act, and applicable organizational rules. Features and permission options differ by product and may change.
