What it does show is a shift in how digital work is assigned: software can perform or support more tasks across job boundaries, while people remain responsible for judgment, exceptions, relationships and outcomes.
What does “AI reshoring” mean for virtual assistants?
“Reshoring” suggests that work once sent to a remote human assistant could instead be handled by software running inside an organization’s own digital systems. That is a useful hypothesis about where work may go, not an established account of a global employment shift. The evidence points to task crossover and experimentation with agents; it does not provide a worldwide tally of assistant roles eliminated.

An agent is more than a chatbot that answers a question. Depending on its permissions and connections, it may retrieve information, draft content, or act across business software. But capability, actual use and job displacement are separate steps: a system might help complete one task without taking responsibility for the whole service or removing the person who provides it.
Which administrative tasks can AI automate or assist with?
Repeatable work in digital systems
AI can help with work that has a clear digital input and output, particularly when a person can check the result. Examples include drafting or adapting copy, finding information in internal procedures, exploring customer data, troubleshooting a website, and preparing basic financial analysis or a contract review. OpenAI’s analysis describes these kinds of tasks as work people do beyond the boundaries of their usual occupations; it does not establish that assistants or specialists performing them have been eliminated. For an assistant workflow, that can mean a system prepares a draft, locates an answer, or handles a predictable step while a person checks it. Whether the system can complete a task end to end depends on the quality of its context, the access it has, the consequences of an error and the availability of a human to handle exceptions.
Work that still depends on people
Tasks involving ambiguous instructions, sensitive relationships, unusual cases, physical presence or consequential judgment are harder to reduce to a repeatable automated workflow. Even when an agent can produce a plausible output, an organization may still need a person to confirm facts, resolve conflicting priorities, communicate with a client or accept accountability. OpenAI’s jobs framework identifies customer preference, institutional accountability, physical presence, judgment and relationships as factors that can keep people central.
What do AI usage and adoption figures actually show?
Workers use AI across occupational boundaries
In OpenAI Economic Research’s analysis of more than 800,000 messages by U.S. ChatGPT users, 16.8% of work-related messages concerned tasks associated with a different occupation. Among occupation-specific messages, after generic messages were excluded, the share was 43.5%. These are shares of analyzed messages, not shares of workers’ jobs, jobs automated or assistants replaced. OpenAI Economic Research (July 27, 2026).

The same analysis found that, after generic work was excluded, 77% of occupation-specific messages from customer-experience workers, 75% from designers, 69% from HR workers, 56% from legal workers and 53% from marketers concerned tasks outside their own occupation. These figures describe the messages in OpenAI’s sample, not the proportion of each occupation’s workload that AI can perform.
Organizations expect agents to affect several functions
In Anthropic’s 2026 report, surveyed organizations most often expected near-term agent impact in software development (57%) and customer service (55%), followed by marketing and sales (46%) and supply chain, logistics and operations (44%). Respondents also expected faster task completion (44%), higher quality or accuracy (37%), improved employee productivity or capacity (34%) and cost savings or lower operating expenses (32%) over the next 12 months. These are survey expectations, not measured productivity gains, audited savings or demonstrated staffing reductions. Anthropic, “The 2026 state of AI agents report”.
Regional plans and one internal deployment are not a global count
Microsoft reported that 90% of surveyed Bay Area leaders planned to scale workforce capacity with digital labor in the next 12 to 18 months, compared with 82% globally and nationally. Those figures capture stated intentions, not completed deployments or observed replacement. Microsoft also said Wells Fargo deployed a Teams agent to 35,000 bankers across 4,000 branches to provide guidance on 1,700 internal procedures. In Microsoft’s account, 75% of searches happened through the agent and response times fell from 10 minutes to 30 seconds. This is a vendor-reported employee-support case, not evidence that virtual assistants were replaced. Microsoft Bay Area Blog (May 7, 2025).

Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index used a survey of 20,000 full-time employed or self-employed knowledge workers who use AI at work across 10 markets, conducted February 18 through April 7, 2026. Its agent telemetry covers March 2025 through March 2026 and is reported as shares and ratios without absolute counts. Does AI exposure mean virtual-assistant jobs will disappear?
No. OpenAI’s 2026 framework classifies 921 U.S. occupations covering approximately 148 million jobs: 18% face relatively high automation risk, 24% are likely to reorganize, 12% could grow with AI, and 46% show less immediate change. OpenAI explicitly cautions that these categories “are not predictions that a particular percentage of jobs will disappear.” They are categories in a framework, not forecasts of equivalent job losses. The effect on employment depends on more than whether a model can perform a task. Organizations have to redesign workflows, connect AI to existing systems, manage errors and regulatory risks, and determine whether automation is cheaper after deployment and supervision costs. If lower costs make a service more accessible, demand may grow; if demand does not grow enough, employers may need fewer labor hours. OpenAI notes that current unemployment changes do not map neatly onto technical exposure, while cautioning that this does not prove AI has no labor-market effect. Effects could appear first in hiring, entry-level opportunities, wages or the composition of work.

Why an AI agent needs more than a model
A model on its own does not know an organization’s procedures, have permission to use its systems or take responsibility for a consequential action. Microsoft’s platform guidance describes production agents as depending on connected systems, enterprise context, identity, policy, governance, monitoring and human oversight. These are Microsoft’s platform-positioning claims, not an independent evaluation of a universal architecture. Jay Parikh, Microsoft Official Blog (June 2, 2026).
- Context and integration: The agent needs relevant documents, procedures and business-system connections to do useful work.
- Identity and permissions: Access should be limited to what the agent needs, with clear rules for actions it may take.
- Governance and observability: Organizations need ways to set policy, monitor activity, detect failures and review what happened.
- Human oversight: People need a route to verify high-impact outputs, intervene when context is missing and handle exceptions.
Microsoft executive Jay Parikh summarized the company’s position this way: “What determines success is the system around the AI: how agents are built and deployed by engineering teams, how they’re contextualized in the enterprise, how they’re governed and observed in production, and how they improve safely over time.” The statement is useful as a description of Microsoft’s view, not a neutral finding that every deployment succeeds.
How can an organization tell whether an agent replaces or supports assistant work?
Evaluate a workflow, not just a model demonstration. These questions distinguish task assistance from dependable delegation:

- Task scope: Is the work repeatable and digital, or does it regularly require ambiguous judgment, relationship management, physical action or handling unusual cases?
- Reliability and recovery: What happens when the agent is wrong, uncertain or missing context? Can a person detect and correct the error?
- Accountability: Who reviews consequential outputs, handles exceptions and is answerable for the result?
- Integration and permissions: Which calendars, documents, customer systems or internal procedures can it access, and what controls limit that access?
- Privacy and governance: What organizational data is exposed, logged, retained and overseen?
- Total cost and demand: After integration, monitoring and human supervision, is the workflow actually cheaper? Could lower costs expand demand for the service?
- Evidence quality: Is the claim based on measured deployment outcomes, a vendor case study, a worker survey, stated expectations or a capability demonstration?
A workflow is closer to genuine replacement only when the organization can reliably deliver the full service—including exceptions and accountability—without the same human labor. Otherwise, the agent may be a tool that changes the assistant’s workload rather than a substitute for the role.
What the evidence cannot establish
The available figures come primarily from AI vendors’ own usage analyses, platform descriptions, surveys and case examples. Their samples and methods differ, and several findings are self-reported expectations or examples within one vendor ecosystem. They do not establish a global headcount of virtual assistants displaced, a net employment effect attributable to AI agents, or verified savings across customers. The distinction matters: evidence that workers use AI for cross-occupation tasks, or that leaders plan to scale digital labor, is not a count of jobs lost.
OpenAI puts the uncertainty plainly: “AI does not determine one inevitable future of work.” Outcomes depend on what employers deploy, how they reorganize work, what customers accept and how much human judgment and accountability remain necessary.
