Are AI Agents in Group Chats Safe for Private Conversations?

A group-chat agent is not automatically private. Check its message scopes, connected accounts, action permissions, output visibility, and data terms before sharing sensitive conversations.

Sometimes—but don’t assume a conversation is private from an agent just because the chat is private. Safety depends on what the specific agent can read, which connected accounts and actions it can use, who can see its replies, and how its provider handles data. For sensitive conversations, check those details and get participants’ agreement before adding it.

What can a group-chat agent see?

There is no single rule for all chat agents. An app’s permissions determine what it can access, and access may extend beyond messages that explicitly mention it. Slack says an AI app’s access depends on its scopes: an app has access to messages with it by default, and adding it to a conversation can grant access to that channel or direct-message data. Slack’s official guidance puts it plainly: “The data that an AI app in Slack can access depends on its scopes.”

Check the particular app’s requested scopes and whether they cover conversation history, files, or metadata. Conversation membership and app permissions matter; the word “private” in a chat’s description does not establish what an invited app can read. In a managed Slack workspace, administrators may also have app approval or management controls that allow review before members install apps.

Make its presence clear to everyone

Participants should know that the agent is in the conversation, who operates it, and whether it receives messages without being mentioned. Slack’s design guidance says agents should signal immediately that they are AI-powered and what they do. For sensitive discussions, agree as a group before inviting one; that is a practical safeguard, not a guarantee about data handling.

Who can see what the agent says?

Treat an agent’s reply in a shared conversation as visible to the participants, not as a private answer to the person who invoked it. OpenAI’s guidance says replies in shared conversations are visible to participants. Do not ask an agent to repeat a private detail on the assumption that only you will see the response.

Generated summaries or other outputs may also be placed somewhere beyond the immediate reply. Slack notes that workflow summaries can be sent into a conversation or stored in a canvas, depending on the workflow steps. Check where the particular workflow sends its output before asking it to process sensitive material.

Can it use the account owner’s other apps?

An agent with connected tools is not just a text generator: it may retrieve information or take supported actions through accounts linked to it. OpenAI warns that users of a workspace agent may access data or perform actions through connected apps as the creator when the agent uses that creator’s personal connection. The creator’s account permissions can therefore affect what other participants can ask the agent to do.

  • Check which work files, email, calendars, or other services are connected.
  • Find out whether the agent can only search and read, or can also send messages, change records, publish content, or share files.
  • Limit connected resources and the agent’s audience to what the task requires.
  • Require a person to review consequential sharing or changes before they happen.

Prefer the least access that still lets the agent do its job. A group’s permission to see its chat does not necessarily mean every member should be able to use the owner’s connected resources through the agent.

What is prompt injection, and why does it matter here?

Messages, files, or other third-party material supplied to an agent can contain instructions intended to mislead it. OpenAI describes this as prompt injection: content in the agent’s context may try to make it do something the user did not request, including sharing information. OpenAI’s safety guidance advises: “Where possible, limit an agent’s access to only the data it needs to complete a task.”

This is a reason to constrain permissions and review consequential actions—not evidence that every agent has been compromised or that prompt injection occurs at a known rate in group chats. If an agent can share data or alter records, inspect what it proposes to do before approving the action.

What should the group check before inviting one?

  1. Identify the agent. Confirm that every participant knows it is present, who operates it, what it does, and whether it responds only when mentioned.
  2. Review access. Inspect the app’s scopes and determine which messages, conversation history, files, and metadata it can read. Check whether permissions can be narrowed.
  3. Review connections and actions. Identify linked accounts, the access they provide, and whether the agent can make changes or share information—not just retrieve it.
  4. Check output destinations. Establish who can see replies, summaries, and generated files, and where workflow outputs are sent or stored.
  5. Read the data terms. Look for the specific provider’s retention, human-review, model-training, and deletion terms for the product and configuration in use.
  6. Check workspace controls. In a managed workspace, ask whether an administrator must approve the app and what review or audit controls apply.
  7. Get agreement for sensitive use. If participants have not agreed to share the conversation with the agent, do not add it to that discussion.

Do platform privacy policies make an agent safe?

They are useful, but their scope matters. Slack says Marketplace apps follow its zero-copy and zero-LLM-training policies. That statement is relevant to those platform policies; it does not establish identical handling for every third-party system, integration, app, or workspace configuration. Review the specific app’s listing and data practices, as well as the provider terms for the deployed version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retention, human review, training, and deletion are product-specific questions. The available platform statements do not provide a universal answer for every vendor or agent. Verify the applicable documentation rather than inferring that a policy for one platform covers a connected service or a different configuration.

What evidence is available about privacy risks?

The evidence supports checking access carefully, but it does not establish a population-wide incident rate or a universal threshold for calling a group-chat agent safe.

  • Survey scope: The 2026 Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium paper “Bot Among Us” describes an online survey of 374 people who had used chatbots on messaging platforms. It examined bot awareness, understanding of message and metadata access, privacy concerns, and expectations. The reported sample does not establish what all messaging users think, and the cited information does not provide detailed result percentages.
  • Documented case, not a prevalence estimate: The USENIX Security 2025 paper “3 Privacy Issues of Chatbots in Group Chats” reports a case study in which a chatbot accessed messages it should not have accessed, including one containing a user’s email address. This shows a possible consequence of over-access; it does not tell us how often it happens across chatbots.

These findings are reasons to understand permissions and data flows, not grounds to claim that every agent reads every message or that every private conversation becomes public.

How to compare two agents for a private group

Use the same questions for each product instead of relying on a general label such as “private” or “secure.” Compare what the provider documents for the exact app, version, and workspace configuration:

  • Message, file, and metadata scopes, including whether access is limited to mentions or includes conversation history.
  • Connected accounts and the agent’s ability to read, send, change, publish, or share.
  • Who can see replies and generated artifacts, and where workflow outputs are delivered or stored.
  • Retention, model-training, human-review, and deletion terms.
  • Administrator approval and available audit controls.
  • Safeguards against prompt injection and whether consequential actions require human confirmation.

There is no like-for-like benchmark in the cited material that ranks vendors across these dimensions. If the provider does not make a relevant permission or data-handling detail clear, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to use the agent for sensitive material.
