Choose ArchiveBox to preserve web pages as a multi-format archive; choose Wallabag to save articles in a cleaner format for later reading. Both can be self-hosted, but they solve different problems. Wallabag also offers a hosted service for people who do not want to maintain a server. This comparison draws on the products’ official documentation and descriptions, not hands-on testing.

How their capture approaches differ
ArchiveBox keeps a broader record
ArchiveBox describes itself as self-hosted web archiving software. Its documented outputs include HTML, PDF, PNG, TXT, JSON, WARC, and SQLite, and its capture options include original or single-file HTML, screenshots, PDFs, WARC, extracted article text, headers, and media or source content. That breadth makes it the closer fit when you want more than a cleaned-up article view. See the ArchiveBox documentation for its stated capture and output formats.

Wallabag prioritizes the reading view
Wallabag’s documentation describes a different goal: it keeps page content while removing elements such as navigation and ads. That is useful for a reading queue, but a clean article view should not be treated as equivalent to a full-fidelity page archive. Wallabag’s official documentation explains its read-it-later approach.

Choose ArchiveBox for preservation and collection
- You want to retain pages in several formats rather than only their extracted text.
- You need to import links from sources such as bookmarks, browser history, or feeds.
- You want scheduled imports or an archive whose files and formats can remain useful outside the app.
ArchiveBox recommends a Docker Compose installation on its project site. Check the current setup instructions for platform requirements before choosing a host or planning a deployment.

- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Choose Wallabag for reading later
- You mainly want a tidy place to save articles and return to them.
- You want a workflow that includes browser or mobile apps, RSS, or e-reader use.
- You prefer extracted reading content over keeping multiple representations of the original page.
Wallabag’s product materials describe mobile offline reading and e-reader workflows. Confirm current app and client support in its documentation before relying on a particular device or integration.
Consider keeping both jobs separate
If you need both a convenient reading queue and a preservation archive, treat them as separate requirements. Wallabag’s clean reading copy and ArchiveBox’s multi-format captures are not interchangeable, and the available product descriptions do not establish that either one duplicates the other’s purpose.

Self-hosting, hosted Wallabag, and portability
Both products can be self-hosted. ArchiveBox’s project site recommends Docker Compose; Wallabag documents self-hosting and also offers wallabag.it for people who would rather not administer a server. The hosted service says its subscription includes hosting, backups, updates, and support.

For portability, ArchiveBox emphasizes ordinary files and standard formats, including WARC and SQLite. wallabag.it says subscribers can export data at any time and lists PDF, ePUB, and mobi among its export formats. Those are distinct portability approaches: one centers on a range of archive outputs, while the other includes export from its hosted reading service.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide what you need to keep. For page records in multiple formats, start with ArchiveBox; for article text prepared for reading, start with Wallabag.
- List your capture sources. Check whether your bookmarks, feeds, browser history, or other inputs fit ArchiveBox’s documented import options, or whether Wallabag’s current apps and integrations suit your reading routine.
- Choose who will maintain it. If you want to run the software yourself, compare each project’s current installation instructions. If you want hosted Wallabag, review wallabag.it’s current service terms.
- Test representative pages. Official feature descriptions do not guarantee every site will capture or parse perfectly. Try the kinds of pages you actually save, including pages with complex layouts or access restrictions.
- Check how you will retrieve the result. Verify the formats and exports you need before building a long-term archive or moving an existing reading library.
ScreenshotNeo as a separate screenshot alternative
ArchiveBox and Wallabag address archiving and reading workflows; ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a replacement for either library. It is an alternative to try first when the specific task is capturing website screenshots: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and provides an MCP server for AI agents. Its API can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
