A blank ArchiveBox screenshot does not automatically mean Chromium is broken. First check whether screenshot.png exists and opens, then verify the browser ArchiveBox selected, inspect what the target site returned, and compare a fresh capture with the extraction log. Those checks separate a missing or failed artifact from a valid image of an empty, blocked, or unauthenticated page.
1. Identify what “blank” means
Open the generated screenshot.png directly in an image viewer. ArchiveBox uses headless Chrome to produce screenshot output, but several different failures can look alike in the archive interface. ArchiveBox’s project repository identifies screenshot PNG output.

- No file: the screenshot extractor may not have produced an artifact, or the capture may have failed before saving.
- A zero-byte or unreadable file: the output may be incomplete. Check the extraction log for a browser launch error, timeout, or other failure.
- A valid, uniformly blank image: the browser may have captured an empty response or a page that had not rendered useful content.
- An error, login, consent, or bot-check page: the screenshot may accurately show what the site served to the archiver rather than the page you expected.
Keep the complete relevant extraction output, including warnings and errors, before retrying. Older reports describe Chromium timeouts during screenshot, DOM, and PDF extraction, and repeated Docker capture failures; they are historical examples, not proof of a current general ArchiveBox defect. See Issue #1125 and Issue #1181.
2. Verify ArchiveBox’s Chrome or Chromium runtime
ArchiveBox’s current Chromium installation guidance says the installer checks for a compatible host browser and can install a managed Chromium build. Use its resolver workflow rather than assuming an arbitrary executable path is valid.

archivebox install chrome. - Run
archivebox versionand inspect the reported browser provider, version, and path. - If you intend to use a host browser, set
CHROME_BINARYas described in the Chromium installation guide, then let the installer validate and project that browser. - Review the extraction log for missing dependencies or browser launch errors. The official troubleshooting guide also recommends confirming dependencies are installed and that the target links can be visited normally.
Record the version output and deployment type when diagnosing the issue. A browser path that exists is not, on its own, evidence that ArchiveBox selected a compatible runtime.
3. Check what the target site returned
Open the same URL in a normal browser and compare the page state with the archived image. If only one site is affected, investigate its response and access requirements before changing ArchiveBox broadly.

- Automated-traffic blocking: ArchiveBox’s configuration guide notes that some sites block automated-looking requests or requests that do not resemble a real browser; this can produce a 403 or an empty response. It suggests a current browser user-agent as a possible site-specific measure, not a universal fix.
- Authentication: if the page requires login, make sure the Chrome-based extractor has the needed authentication state. The configuration guide describes personas for authentication and Chrome extractors reading profile state from a persona’s Chrome user-data directory.
- Intervening pages: a login wall, consent prompt, bot challenge, or access-denied page may be what the browser actually received. A screenshot of that page is different from a failed screenshot file.
4. Check the screenshot viewport settings
If the file opens but has unexpected dimensions or shows an unexpected region, inspect ArchiveBox’s resolution configuration. The configuration guide documents RESOLUTION as a width,height viewport setting for screenshot and PDF capture, along with the extractor-specific SCREENSHOT_RESOLUTION setting.
Confirm that the configured values match the viewport you intend to capture. The documentation does not establish that an ordinary resolution setting causes a blank screenshot, so treat this as a configuration check rather than a presumed fix.

5. Repeat the capture and compare outputs
A retry can help distinguish a one-off timeout from a repeatable site or environment problem. If the URL is already in the archive, the troubleshooting guide documents this command to capture it again:
archivebox add --no-only-new URL
Replace URL with the target address. Avoid manually moving or deleting archive data to force a retry: the guide warns that doing so can desynchronize database records and snapshot files.

Compare the repeat screenshot with other outputs. ArchiveBox notes that not all sites archive effectively with every method and recommends combining wget, PDFs, and screenshots when collection links are broken. A successful PDF or DOM capture alongside a blank screenshot narrows the investigation to a difference in capture path or rendering, but it does not prove a particular cause.

- One URL versus several: if other sites capture normally, focus first on the affected site’s response, access controls, or page behavior. If many unrelated URLs fail, inspect the browser runtime, dependencies, and environment.
- Fresh capture versus repeat capture: if the result changes, a transient timeout or load issue is plausible; if it repeats, look for a persistent site or configuration condition.
- Public versus authenticated page: if only logged-in pages are blank or show a login wall, check the Chrome profile state available to the extractor.
- Screenshot versus PDF or DOM: differences can help isolate the capture stage, but one successful format does not establish why another failed.
7. What to include when asking for help
If the checks do not identify the cause, provide enough detail for someone to distinguish a browser problem from a target-site response:
- Output of
archivebox version. - Deployment type and operating system.
- The affected target URL, with sensitive query values redacted.
- Whether
screenshot.pngis missing, zero-byte, unreadable, uniformly blank, or an error/login/block page; include its size and dimensions if available. - The complete relevant extraction log, including timeout and browser launch messages.
- Whether PDF or DOM capture succeeds for the same URL.
The official troubleshooting page asks users with substantial problems to share affected URLs and errors. Without installation and capture details, there is no reliable way to name one exact fix.
