The right ArchiveBox alternative depends on what you need to preserve. Choose Browsertrix for browser-based crawls and replay of interactive sites; choose wallabag for saving articles to read later. If you want a screenshot rather than a replayable archive, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. ArchiveBox itself remains a strong fit when you want several representations of saved pages and media under your control.
Which ArchiveBox alternative fits your archiving job?
“Website archiving” can mean saving an article in a clean reading format, preserving multiple page files, or capturing a crawl that can be replayed in a browser. Those jobs call for different tools; these products are not interchangeable.
| Your priority | Best-documented fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep several representations of pages and related media | ArchiveBox | Its documentation lists original and self-contained HTML, screenshots, PDF, WARC, extracted text, media and more. It also describes imports, scheduling, CLI, web UI, APIs and filesystem access. ArchiveBox documentation |
| Crawl and replay interactive sites or collections | Browsertrix | Supports browser-based crawl workflows and WACZ packaging for archived items. Self-hosting calls for Kubernetes and Helm 3. Deployment docs · Archived items |
| Save articles for later reading | wallabag | Self-hosted, article-focused reading across browser, phone, RSS reader or e-reader. It is not a substitute for broad crawling and multi-format preservation. wallabag self-hosting |
| Get an image or PDF snapshot through an API | ScreenshotNeo | A website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replayable web-archive crawler. Its clean-shot handling and billing verdicts make it useful when a visual capture is the actual deliverable. ScreenshotNeo |
These are documented capability distinctions, not results of a head-to-head benchmark.
ArchiveBox: broad preservation in several formats
ArchiveBox is still worth choosing when you need more than a screenshot or readable article. Its documented outputs include the source HTML and related assets, a self-contained HTML copy, screenshots, PDFs, WARC, extracted text and media. The project also documents multiple ways to add and manage captures, including CLI, web UI, APIs, imports and scheduling. See the official documentation for the current supported workflows and formats.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For self-hosting, the project materials recommend Docker Compose as the easiest setup. ArchiveBox documentation also lists NFS and SMB storage options, which may suit an existing NAS; network storage is optional, and the docs do not endorse a particular drive or model. Plan for the ongoing work of maintaining the application, its dependencies, storage and backups.
Browsertrix: browser-based crawls and replay
Browsertrix is the stronger fit when the preservation job is a crawl rather than a collection of isolated page files. Its documentation covers workflows ranging from a single page to whole websites, including social-media captures, and describes WACZ as a portable package for contextualized replay. Archived items can be imported and exported; consult the archived-items guide for the supported workflow.

Plan for a larger self-hosting footprint
Browsertrix describes itself as cloud-native; its self-hosting instructions require a Kubernetes cluster and Helm 3. This is a materially heavier operating commitment than following ArchiveBox’s recommended Docker Compose setup. Its deployment guidance also covers configurable storage. Compare the infrastructure you already operate with the maintenance burden before choosing it. Browsertrix deployment documentation
Authenticated captures need care
Browsertrix can use configured browser profiles for signed-in sites. Its documentation recommends dedicated archiving credentials to reduce risk to personal accounts. A profile is not a guarantee that every login wall, paywall or changing site will capture successfully. Consider the site’s terms and the sensitivity of the account and archived data. See the crawl guide and browser-profile guidance.

Check the current security guidance before deployment
Browsertrix’s deployment documentation reports an access-control issue affecting releases from v1.15.0 up to, but not including, v1.22.8, and recommends v1.22.8 or later. Version guidance can change; check the live deployment documentation and its linked security advisory before installing or upgrading.
wallabag: a self-hosted reading library, not a crawler
wallabag is aimed at saving web articles for comfortable later reading. It suits someone who wants an article-oriented library accessible from browser, phone, RSS reader or e-reader, hosted on infrastructure they control. It does not aim to preserve a website as an interactive crawl or produce the range of page and media artifacts documented by ArchiveBox. Start with the wallabag self-hosting page to assess its deployment options.

Compare replay, portability and operating burden
- Need an inspectable collection of page representations? ArchiveBox documents HTML, JSON, PDF, PNG and WARC outputs among its formats. Check which specific outputs your workflow needs and how you will back them up. ArchiveBox documentation
- Need contextualized browser replay? Browsertrix documents WACZ packaging and import/export for archived items. Confirm the replay workflow fits the tools your readers or organization will use. Browsertrix archived items
- Need only the article text for later? wallabag’s purpose is article saving and reading, not full-site crawling. wallabag self-hosting
- Need a visual artifact? A screenshot API can return a rendered image or PDF, but that is different from preserving crawl context and replay. ScreenshotNeo is the screenshot-focused option described below.
- Need storage you control? Compare supported storage backends, archive export formats, backup procedures and the operational skills required. ArchiveBox lists NFS and SMB; Browsertrix deployment guidance describes configurable storage. Neither means a NAS is mandatory.
Choose by the material that must survive
- The readable article: use wallabag when comfortable reading is the point.
- Multiple files and representations: use ArchiveBox when you want broad capture outputs and a flexible personal or organizational archive.
- An interactive crawl with replay: consider Browsertrix if you can operate Kubernetes and Helm and want its browser-based crawl and WACZ workflow.
- A screenshot or PDF response: use a screenshot service when a visual capture is enough; do not treat it as a substitute for an archival crawl.
Before committing, test representative pages from your own collection, including pages with JavaScript, media, login requirements or consent banners. Verify that the result contains the material you need and that you can export, replay and back it up in the way your archive requires.
ScreenshotNeo for screenshot and PDF capture
For a screenshot or PDF rather than a replayable archive, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server: a GET request with a URL returns PNG, JPEG or WebP, or a PDF. Before capture it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
The request below returns a WebP screenshot of a page. The API supports capture settings for full pages and lazy-loaded images, an element selected by CSS, dark mode, device and viewport presets, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS or JavaScript, click and wait behavior, request blocking, headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage information and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
