Arc Raiders Grappling Hook FAQ: Controls, Range, and Common Mistakes

The Grappling Hook is a rope-based traversal gadget, distinct from the Snap Hook. Exact bindings and numeric range are unverified; here’s what players can rely on, plus reported pitfalls and acquisition details.

Arc Raiders’ Grappling Hook is a rope-based traversal gadget, not the Snap Hook. It can be used to climb toward an anchor, swing across a gap, or descend, but the reviewed sources do not verify its exact default button bindings or numeric range. The 18 m figure often associated with the update is the Snap Hook’s revised range, not the Grappling Hook’s.

What the Grappling Hook does

Embark added the Grappling Hook in the October 8, 2026 Frozen Trail 2.0 update. The official update describes intended uses including reaching hard-to-reach places, descending buildings, and swinging over gaps. In a PC Gamer hands-on preview published October 7, Morgan Park described it as a simulated rope: once attached, the anchor becomes a pivot that a player can move toward, away from, or around.

That makes the Grappling Hook a traversal tool with more than one possible movement outcome. Depending on the anchor and your movement, you may climb toward it, lower yourself, or swing. Park also reported redeploying the hook while airborne in the preview session, without a cooldown or use limit. That detail is an observation from a preview build, not a guarantee about every live version or future balance change.

The key practical distinction is that firing the hook does not necessarily mean the game will simply place you on top of the object you aimed at. The rope creates a connection; you still need to manage your movement and the landing. Treat the anchor point, rope path, and landing surface as separate parts of the maneuver.

Grappling Hook vs. Snap Hook: what is different?

The two names refer to separate gadgets. Embark said the new Grappling Hook warranted a distinct identity rather than being a “linear upgrade” to the Snap Hook. The official framing is that the Snap Hook serves as burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing a location. The Grappling Hook instead provides rope-based traversal, as described in the update and the preview report.

Feature Grappling Hook Snap Hook
Movement style Rope and anchor; reported uses include climbing, swinging, and descending. Burst mobility intended to close distance or traverse a location.
Verified range A numeric range is not stated in the reviewed official update or preview report. 18 m after the October 8, 2026 Frozen Trail 2.0 change, according to Embark.
Other verified update figures Not stated in the reviewed official update. Durability consumption changed from 2% to 4% per use; power cost changed from 50 to 60 in Frozen Trail 2.0.

The range, durability, and power figures in the Snap Hook column apply only to that gadget. Do not use them to estimate how far the Grappling Hook can reach or how often it can be used. The distinction matters because the update changed the Snap Hook at the same time it introduced the Grappling Hook, making it easy to attach the older gadget’s numbers to the new one by mistake.

Controls: how to find the right inputs

Exact default Grappling Hook controls are not enumerated in the reviewed sources. Embark’s update mentions an updated default gamepad mapping but does not list the Grappling Hook’s inputs; PC Gamer’s preview account does not name keyboard, mouse, or controller buttons either. As a result, there is no source-backed key or button sequence to give for firing, managing, or detaching the rope.

  1. Open Arc Raiders’ in-game controls or settings for the platform you are playing on.
  2. Check the current binding for the Grappling Hook or its associated gadget action. Look at the actual displayed binding rather than assuming a default.
  3. If you have remapped controls, verify the custom assignment on the same screen; a platform’s default mapping may not match your setup.
  4. Use the displayed in-game controls to identify any separate actions for using or managing the gadget. The reviewed sources do not establish whether those actions have separate inputs or what their defaults are.

Arc Raiders is listed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on the official site, and bindings can vary by platform or custom mapping. Do not carry a remembered control from another platform—or from another gadget—over without checking your own settings. If an input does not behave as expected, first confirm the active binding and that the Grappling Hook is the selected item; the available reporting does not establish a universal control troubleshooting sequence.

Range: is the Grappling Hook 18 metres?

No verified Grappling Hook range is given in the reviewed official update or hands-on report. The official 18 m value belongs to the Snap Hook after Frozen Trail 2.0 reduced its range from 20 m. Embark also raised that gadget’s durability consumption from 2% to 4% per use and its power cost from 50 to 60. Those figures are not Grappling Hook specifications.

Therefore, there is no reliable numeric Grappling Hook range to quote here. Do not plan an anchor attempt on the assumption that it reaches 18 m, 20 m, or any other precise distance. The available preview reporting shows examples of traversal, not a controlled maximum-range measurement, and its author does not provide a distance figure.

If you need to judge a specific gap in play, use a cautious attempt rather than treating a number for the Snap Hook as a rule for the rope. The Grappling Hook’s intended uses include crossing gaps and reaching elevated places, but the reviewed material does not define a maximum distance, the conditions that affect it, or a tested safety margin. A successful connection in one situation cannot establish a universal range.

How to approach a grapple without assuming it will land for you

The available evidence supports a simple mental model: the hook establishes an anchor and the rope gives you a route to work with. It does not establish a guaranteed automatic ledge grab. The following approach is practical guidance inferred from the reported behavior and failure cases, not a tested official procedure.

  1. Choose the destination, not just the highest point. Before firing, identify where you want to finish and whether there is a usable surface there. A rope can get you near a roof edge without completing the final step onto it.
  2. Check the rope’s likely path. A balcony, overhang, or other protrusion between you and the anchor can interfere with the rope. Prefer a clear line when possible, and reassess if the rope appears to catch or wrap around the structure.
  3. Decide whether you are climbing, swinging, or descending. The same anchor can support different movement. Think about the direction you need to travel and avoid assuming that attaching the rope automatically produces the desired motion.
  4. Allow for a separate landing action. Reaching the height of a ledge is not the same as grabbing or standing on it. Keep a recovery option in mind when testing a new anchor or approach.
  5. Be selective about moving targets. The preview reported a player sliding off the large Emperor ARC. Do not assume every large or moving surface will reliably hold the player just because the hook can interact with it.

These steps are deliberately cautious: the preview account documents particular successes and mishaps, not a complete list of compatible surfaces or guaranteed solutions. The game may also change after the preview build described in that report.

Common mistakes and what to do instead

Expecting the hook to pull you directly onto a roof

In the preview, the player could climb the rope without grabbing the ledge at the top. The mistake is treating vertical progress as a completed landing. Aim for an anchor and a usable landing surface, then account for the transition from rope to ledge rather than assuming the hook performs it automatically.

Ignoring balconies or other obstructions

Park reported the rope tangling around a protruding balcony. A route that looks clear from your starting position may still put the rope against an overhang or other projection. Check the path between you and the anchor; if it is obstructed, try a different approach or anchor instead of assuming the rope will pass cleanly.

Trusting an ARC surface to hold you

The preview player slid off the large Emperor ARC. That is one reported failure, not proof that all ARC surfaces behave alike. Avoid committing to a maneuver on an unfamiliar moving surface as though it were a stable wall or roof, and keep a fallback route available.

Using Snap Hook numbers as Grappling Hook specs

The 18 m range, 4% durability use per activation, and 60 power cost are the Snap Hook’s post-update values. They do not answer how far the Grappling Hook reaches, how its resources work, or how it behaves. Check that a stat is explicitly attributed to the right gadget before using it to make a decision.

Following a control guide that assumes your binding

Exact default Grappling Hook buttons are not verified in the cited accounts, and controls may differ by platform or remapping. Check the in-game binding on your setup instead of relying on an unconfirmed key name or a remembered controller input.

How to get and craft the Grappling Hook

A Beebom guide published October 9, 2026 reports several acquisition routes: buying the item from Nomadic Envoys, finding it as loot, earning it through Reward Pass progression, or obtaining it through Pendola Pass quests. The guide says the blueprint is available at Frozen Trail Reward Pass level 12 or through the Research Station. These are secondary-source details and may change as the game is updated; check current in-game availability if a route or requirement does not match what you see.

What is confirmed—and what is not

The clearest official information is the October 8 Frozen Trail 2.0 update: it introduced the Grappling Hook, differentiated its role from the Snap Hook, and published revised Snap Hook statistics. The rope’s practical movement and the three failure cases above come from PC Gamer’s October 7 hands-on preview, so they should be understood as observations in that preview session rather than controlled tests or official guarantees.

  • Confirmed by the official update: the Grappling Hook was introduced in Frozen Trail 2.0, and the Snap Hook has a distinct burst-mobility role. The Snap Hook’s revised range is 18 m, with 4% durability consumption per use and 60 power cost.
  • Described in hands-on preview reporting: the Grappling Hook behaves like a rope and was used for climbing, swinging, descending, and midair redeployment; reported problems included missing a ledge grab, a rope tangling on a balcony, and sliding off the Emperor ARC.
  • Not verified in those sources: exact default Grappling Hook inputs, a numeric Grappling Hook range, and a comprehensive list of surfaces or situations where attachment will work.
  • Reported by a secondary item guide: the listed acquisition routes, blueprint unlocks, and crafting recipe; these may be affected by later game changes.

Keeping those evidence levels separate is useful when troubleshooting: official patch statistics answer questions about the Snap Hook, while the preview helps explain how the new rope tool can behave without establishing universal mechanics.
