Practice on forgiving drops, leave room to react, and check your current control bindings before attempting a risky descent.
What the Grappling Hook can—and cannot—do
Embark added the Grappling Hook in the Frozen Trail 2.0 update, which also introduced the Pendola Pass map. Those are the official update facts reported in the ARC Raiders Help Center’s October 8, 2026 update notes. A PC Gamer hands-on report published October 7, 2026 describes the hook as a simulated rope: the attachment point can let a player climb toward it, descend from it, or swing against it.

That description is useful for planning movement, but it is not a fall-damage specification. The hands-on account does not establish a safe fall height, a precise activation window, or a rule saying the hook cancels damage if it catches you. The official ARC Raiders site describes the game’s mechanics broadly, but the reviewed information does not provide a grapple-specific fall-damage procedure. So the dependable answer to “How do I use it without taking fall damage?” is: there is no verified, guaranteed method in these sources. Use the hook to manage your route, and do not assume it will make a lethal drop safe.

PC Gamer’s description comes from a preview session, not official technical documentation or a confirmed live-version specification. Its report says the hook could be redeployed in midair without a cooldown or use limit in the version the reporter played. Treat that as reported preview behavior rather than a promise that every live build, situation, or future update behaves identically.

Plan around the anchor point
The attachment point is the useful part of the grapple to think about first. The reported movement options—climbing toward, descending from, or swinging against the attachment—depend on where the line connects relative to your intended route. Before firing, look for a visible point that appears to support the direction you want to travel. This is a planning principle, not a claim that every surface or object accepts the hook; compatible anchor types have not been established by the sources reviewed.
- For an ascent: choose a point that appears to be above or beyond the ledge you want to reach. The reported behavior supports climbing toward an attachment, but does not guarantee that a particular point will pull you onto a specific platform.
- For a descent: consider whether the anchor gives you a way to move down in a controlled direction rather than simply dropping toward the ground. The report describes descending from the attachment; it does not say the resulting landing is safe.
- For a swing: look at the space between your current position and the intended landing area. The report says the line can be used to swing against the anchor, but does not specify how far, how fast, or how precisely the swing can be controlled.
Make the route decision before committing to a drop. If the anchor is hard to see, the intended landing is obstructed, or you cannot tell where the line will take you, choose a less risky route instead of treating the grapple as an emergency guarantee. Specific routes and anchor locations on Pendola Pass are not established by the cited material, so these principles apply generally rather than identifying tested map shortcuts.
Use the line to shape vertical movement
A grapple can be useful even when the goal is not to reach the very top of a structure. The hands-on report describes three broad movement relationships to an attachment point: moving toward it, descending from it, and swinging against it. Think of these as options for changing your position and trajectory, not as three guaranteed maneuvers with known distances or outcomes.

Climbing toward a point
When you need to gain height, an attachment point may help you move toward an elevated route. Check where you expect to end up before using it: the report does not promise an automatic landing on a ledge, nor does it specify whether every grapple ends in a stable position. Avoid planning a follow-up jump that depends on an exact arrival point until you have learned the current behavior in a low-risk area.
Descending from an attachment
A descent can help you approach a lower area without taking the same direct path as a free fall, but “descending” is not synonymous with “taking no fall damage.” The available evidence gives no maximum safe descent, damage threshold, or confirmation that remaining attached prevents damage on landing. If you need to reach a lower level, leave enough room to observe the result and adjust your route rather than testing an unknown drop over a lethal gap.
Swinging across space
A swing may help change your horizontal position as well as your height. Because the report does not document speed, control sensitivity, or landing precision, do not assume a swing will carry you to a particular platform or stop you before impact. Treat the destination as an estimate until you have practiced the maneuver with a safe recovery area.

How to practice without betting a run on an unknown timing window
The sources do not say how much fall distance remains recoverable after a fall begins. That makes last-second experimentation near a lethal drop a poor test. Learn what the hook does while the consequences are modest, then rely on it only within the limits you have actually observed in the current game.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check the current bindings. Open the game’s control settings and find the Grappling Hook action for your input method. Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 notes mention updated default gamepad mapping, but the reviewed update information does not give a grapple button sequence. Do not rely on a button prompt or control scheme from a different build or platform.
- Start somewhere forgiving. Choose a drop or elevation change where an imperfect landing is unlikely to be fatal. The sources do not identify a specific practice location, so use your own judgment about the terrain and nearby hazards.
- Test one movement at a time. Try an attachment intended to support movement upward, then one for descent, then a swing. Change only one part of the attempt at a time—such as the anchor or your starting position—so you can tell what affected the result.
- Watch the full outcome. Note where the line attaches, how your character moves, whether the line can be redeployed in that situation, and how the landing resolves. Do not treat a successful movement in one setup as proof that the same timing or anchor will work elsewhere.
- Increase risk gradually. Move to more demanding terrain only after you understand the behavior well enough to make a deliberate choice. If the current build behaves differently from the preview account, use what you observe in the live game rather than assuming the report’s details still apply.
This is a cautious practice routine, not a verified fall-damage exploit or safety procedure. It is intended to help you learn the gadget before a high-stakes descent, not to establish a universal threshold.
Keep a recovery option, but leave time to use it
PC Gamer reported that midair redeployment was possible without a cooldown or use limit in its preview session. That may give a player another opportunity to alter a route after leaving a ledge, but it does not establish how late the hook can be redeployed, whether every midair situation permits it, or whether a re-attachment prevents damage. The key practical point is to preserve space and time to react. If you wait until impact is imminent, the sources give no basis for expecting another grapple to save you.

When testing a possible recovery, focus on what the game actually permits in the moment and do not count on unlimited attempts as a live-version rule. A reported lack of cooldown or use limit is not the same as a guaranteed recovery window: the grapple still needs a usable attachment and enough time for the movement to matter, and the available report does not quantify either condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “descent” means “damage-free.” The report supports descending from an anchor, not immunity to damage at the end of the movement.
- Waiting for the last instant. No reviewed source gives a latest safe activation point or recoverable fall distance. Practice earlier and on safer terrain.
- Assuming every visible object is a valid anchor. Anchor compatibility is not documented in the reviewed material. Check whether the game actually attaches before committing to a route that depends on it.
- Trusting a preview behavior as a permanent rule. The no-cooldown, no-use-limit midair redeployment detail comes from a preview-session report. Verify how the current live build behaves.
- Using guessed button inputs. Default gamepad mapping was updated with Frozen Trail 2.0, and the cited update notes do not provide the hook’s exact input. Check the control settings for your platform and current bindings.
What to do when a grapple attempt does not work as expected
If the line does not attach, do not assume that the point is valid or that the problem is your timing. Try a clearly visible alternative from a safer position and observe whether the game recognizes it. The reviewed sources do not list compatible surfaces or diagnose failed attachments, so there is no documented object-by-object fix.
If you attach but do not reach the intended ledge, reassess the anchor and the route rather than repeating the same maneuver over a dangerous drop. The hands-on report establishes broad movement options, not a precise landing-control method. If a midair redeployment fails, treat that as evidence that the current situation may not allow another attempt; the preview report does not define exceptions or timing limits.

If your controls differ from a guide or video, consult the in-game settings and confirm the action assigned to the Grappling Hook in your current setup. This is especially relevant after the update’s gamepad mapping changes. No button combination should be assumed from the general update description alone.
What is confirmed about fall damage?
The sources establish the hook’s presence in Frozen Trail 2.0 and report that it can be used for climbing toward, descending from, or swinging against an attachment point. They do not establish that any particular anchor, activation timing, midair redeployment, or descent cancels fall damage. They also do not provide a numeric threshold, a guaranteed safe procedure, or verified map-specific route instructions.
For now, use the Grappling Hook to make traversal more flexible, and approach fall damage as a separate risk you still need to manage. A maneuver that works in one drop is not proof of a universal safe technique; the live game’s observed behavior may also differ from the preview version described in the October 7, 2026 PC Gamer report.
