What Turborepo is

Turborepo is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript codebases, including monorepos and single-package workspaces. It forms a task graph and runs tasks in parallel across available cores. Task outputs and logs can be cached locally, while Remote Caching shares cache artifacts among machines. Vercel Remote Cache is free on all Vercel plans, including for teams that do not host applications on Vercel; teams can also self-host a cache using an HTTP server that implements Turborepo’s Remote Caching API. Remote artifacts can be signed with HMAC-SHA256 and checked for integrity and authenticity when downloaded. The CLI is generally supported on Debian-based Linux, macOS, and Windows with x86_64 and ARM64. Stable package-manager support includes pnpm 8+, npm 8+, Yarn 1+ including Plug’n’Play, and Bun 1.2+. CI guides cover Vercel, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, GitLab CI, Travis CI, and Buildkite. To cache task files, the outputs must be declared in configuration. Turborepo is free.

Who it suits

Turborepo suits developers working in JavaScript or TypeScript repositories who want task parallelization and local or shared caching. Its support for single-package workspaces as well as monorepos gives it more than one workspace use case.

What it does well

  • Free to use.
  • Runs tasks in parallel across available cores.
  • Caches task outputs and logs locally.
  • Remote Cache is free on all Vercel plans.
  • Supports self-hosted remote caching.

What to know first

  • Tasks must declare file outputs to cache those files.
  • Stable package-manager support has minimum versions.
  • CLI support is listed for Debian-based Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Limits

Turborepo is free. Task files are cached only when their outputs are declared in configuration. Vercel Remote Cache has monthly upload allowances by Vercel plan: Hobby 100 GB, Pro 1 TB, and Enterprise 4 TB; it is free on all Vercel plans.

Getting started

  1. Visit https://turborepo.dev/.
  2. Use the CLI on Debian-based Linux, macOS, or Windows with x86_64 or ARM64.
  3. Use a stable supported package manager: pnpm 8+, npm 8+, Yarn 1+ including Plug’n’Play, or Bun 1.2+.
  4. Declare task file outputs in configuration to have those files cached.
  5. Use Vercel Remote Cache, or configure a self-hosted cache with an HTTP server implementing the API.

Verdict

Turborepo organizes workspace tasks for parallel execution and can cache outputs locally or remotely. Teams should account for the configured-output requirement when relying on task caching.

Questions
