Instead of MuJava
MuJava alternatives
MuJava generates method-level and class-level mutants for Java programs, then runs JUnit test cases against them to measure mutation coverage. Its 24 class-level operators focus on object-oriented code, and it can analyze individual classes or packages. Version 4 supports Java 1.6 language features, including generics and annotations, and MuJava runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is free and open source under the Apache license, with both a documented GUI workflow and the muScript command-line interface.

ArcMutate
Free plan LinuxMacSelf-hosted+1Java, Kotlin, or Android teams adding pull-request mutation checks — ArcMutate adds pull-request workflows, incremental analysis, and subsumption analysis to Java testing, with Kotlin and beta Android support beyond MuJava's Java focus.
- 2
Mutant
Free plan LinuxMacRuby teams using RSpec, Minitest, or Test::Unit — Mutant targets Ruby and integrates with three Ruby test frameworks, while MuJava generates Java mutants and evaluates JUnit tests.
- 3
Mutatest
Free plan Open source APILinuxMac+2Python teams wanting command-line mutation diagnostics — Mutatest targets Python AST mutations and can filter targets using coverage data, unlike MuJava's Java and JUnit workflow.
- 4
go-mutesting
Free plan LinuxSelf-hostedGo teams measuring test detection across packages — go-mutesting mutates Go source and reports a mutation score, while MuJava focuses on Java classes and packages.
- 5
LittleDarwin
Free plan LinuxLinux users running Java mutations through build commands — LittleDarwin runs a build command for each Java mutant and supports higher-order mutations, unlike MuJava's JUnit test-case workflow.
- 6
MutPy
Free plan LinuxSelf-hostedPython teams needing unittest or experimental pytest support — MutPy applies AST mutations to Python and offers YAML and HTML reports, whereas MuJava targets Java and JUnit.
- 7
pymute
Free plan LinuxPython and pytest teams comfortable installing Rust tools — Pymute targets Python with pytest or tox and manipulates source text for mutations, while MuJava targets Java with JUnit.

Its workflow has constraints: JUnit test suites are unsupported, equivalent mutants must be found by hand, and the setup requires two JAR files plus Java CLASSPATH and PATH configuration. The maintainers provide it as-is, without guarantees of answers, fixes, or improvements. Alternatives may fit better if you need another language, a different test runner, pull-request or CI workflows, or another way to select and run mutations. Compare those needs with platform and installation requirements, and check any language-specific limitations before switching.
