KubeSolo

What KubeSolo is
KubeSolo is an open-source, MIT-licensed Kubernetes distribution that exposes the full Kubernetes API on a single node, without clustering machinery such as etcd quorum logic or multi-node networking overlays. The site describes idle memory use under 200 MB and positions it for edge devices, factory and OT infrastructure, IoT hardware, developer workstations, remote sites and kiosks. It supports Kubernetes manifests, Helm, CRDs, RBAC, ServiceAccounts, namespace isolation, health probes, restart policies and resource limits. Networking includes an integrated CNI, CoreDNS and ClusterIP, NodePort and LoadBalancer services. Persistent volumes use Rancher’s local-path-provisioner by default, and CSI drivers are supported. KubeSolo can run offline without cloud connectivity or external registries. Its d2k component provides a Docker-compatible API over mTLS, while a Prometheus endpoint and ready-made Grafana dashboards cover component health, certificate expiry and database size. Linux support includes ARM, ARM64, x86_64 and RISC-V 64; kubesoloctl can also run it in a Docker container on macOS and Windows WSL2.
Who it suits
KubeSolo may suit teams running Kubernetes workloads on resource-constrained edge devices, remote sites or developer workstations. Its single-node scope fits users who do not need a multi-node cluster.
What it does well
- Full Kubernetes API on a single node.
- Site describes under 200 MB idle RAM use.
- Runs offline without cloud connectivity or external registries.
- Includes Prometheus metrics endpoint and Grafana dashboards.
- Supports ARM, ARM64, x86_64 and RISC-V 64.
What to know first
- Single-node by design; multi-node clusters are not supported.
- Not currently CNCF-certified.
- Some operators and CSI drivers may need kubelet-directory configuration.
- Linux installation has specified system requirements.
Limits
KubeSolo does not provide multi-node clusters; managing multiple instances centrally requires a solution such as Portainer. Systems with operators, add-ons or CSI drivers that assume /var/lib/kubelet may need configuration for KubeSolo’s custom kubelet directory.
Getting started
- Use a supported Linux distribution, or prepare macOS or Windows WSL2 for container mode
- Ensure sudo access, curl, iptables and libsqlite3-dev are available
- Remove or stop any container engine on the Linux target
- Install KubeSolo or run kubesoloctl in a Docker container
- Apply Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts or CRDs as needed
- Connect Portainer Edge Agent if centralized fleet management is required
Verdict
KubeSolo provides Kubernetes APIs and common workload features in a single-node distribution with an offline mode. Its one-node scope and possible configuration needs for software that assumes /var/lib/kubelet are important to weigh.
Questions
Is KubeSolo free and open source?
