What HDAT2 is

HDAT2 is a drive diagnostic program for ATA, ATAPI, SATA, NVMe, SSD and SCSI/USB devices. Its device tests can check detected drives and repair bad sectors. A separate file-system testing level works with MBR/GPT, boot data and directories on FAT12/16/32, exFAT and NTFS. SMART functions are available for ATA/SATA, SCSI and NVMe drives. HDAT2 also includes SET MAX and Device Configuration Overlay controls, including options to restore full drive capacity, and can convert supported SATA/NVMe devices between 512e logical sectors and 4Kn. It detects devices on AHCI and some RAID controllers, and USB devices through USB ASPI or BIOS when supported. The main program requires a real DOS system booted from USB, floppy disk or CD/DVD; the Windows 32/64-bit demo runs only at drive level, omits file-level operation and aborts almost all commands while simulating conflicts. The freeware plan is free, for one or more machines, with redistribution without profit; it is provided as-is without warranty.

Who it suits

HDAT2 suits users diagnosing supported drives who can boot a real DOS system. Its Windows demo is for limited drive-level operation, not full testing.

What it does well

  • Tests and repairs bad sectors on detected devices.
  • File-system tests cover MBR/GPT, boot data and several formats.
  • SMART functions cover ATA/SATA, SCSI and NVMe.
  • Includes controls to restore full drive capacity.

What to know first

  • The main program requires a real DOS boot system.
  • The Windows demo omits file-level operation.
  • The demo aborts almost all commands while simulating conflicts.
  • Versions 6.x/7.x support only 32-bit AHCI.

Limits

The freeware plan is provided as-is without warranty and permits redistribution only without profit. The Windows demo operates only at drive level, provides no file-level functions and aborts almost all commands while simulating conflicts.
