Instead of Backstage
Backstage alternatives
Backstage is a free, open-source framework for building a shared developer portal. Its catalog connects services, websites, libraries, and data pipelines with ownership and metadata. Software Templates generate projects from code skeletons, TechDocs keeps documentation close to code, and Search can index sources such as TechDocs, Confluence, and Stack Overflow. Teams can connect providers including GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, LDAP, and cloud services, then extend the portal with open-source or custom plugins. Self-service workflows, engineering scorecards, and Kubernetes deployment views also support internal developer work.

A different product may suit you better if your main need is monitoring infrastructure, tracking physical assets and licenses, or mapping security relationships rather than maintaining a portal. Backstage requires self-hosted operation; its standalone setup is not production-ready and calls for at least 20 GB of disk and 6 GB of memory. Its threat model describes only rudimentary denial-of-service protection and recommends deployment in a protected environment. Compare alternatives by their main task, deployment choices, integrations, platform coverage, and price, and consider whether you still need Backstage’s catalog, templates, documentation, and extensible portal.
