Both Applitools Eyes and Percy can test responsive websites. The practical difference is how they capture viewport states and how that fits your pages, test framework, review process, and usage model. Applitools describes capturing multiple breakpoints in one test and using Visual AI to identify layout issues. Percy stores a DOM snapshot and page assets, then renders them at configured widths; if your page’s DOM changes between widths, Percy documents a separate responsive DOM capture setup. Neither is an established across-the-board winner for accuracy or speed, so evaluate both on representative pages before committing.
How the responsive capture models differ
| Decision point | Applitools Eyes | Percy | What to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| How widths are captured | Applitools says a single test can capture mobile, tablet, and desktop breakpoints, with Visual AI and layout-match behavior to help focus on layout changes. These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings. Applitools responsive testing | Percy stores the original DOM snapshot and page assets, then renders them server-side at configured widths. Percy responsive testing | Whether each resulting image reflects the page state your users actually see at that width. |
| DOM changes by viewport | Applitools presents a multiple-breakpoint workflow within one test. Check how it behaves with your app’s breakpoint-dependent content and scripts. | Percy has explicit responsive DOM capture guidance for pages whose document structure changes across widths; setup and supported SDK/version details matter. Percy responsive DOM snapshots | Mobile-only menus, conditional content, and components that mount or unmount at breakpoints. |
| Review and baselines | Applitools describes Visual AI, match options, and updating baselines across affected viewports together. Applitools web testing | Percy provides screenshot diffs and an approval workflow. Percy visual testing basics | How much noise your team sees, who approves changes, and how baseline updates fit pull requests. |
| Framework integration | Applitools documents SDKs for Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, WebdriverIO, TestCafe, Puppeteer, and other frameworks. Confirm the language and exact SDK for your stack. Applitools SDK guidance | Responsive DOM capture depends on SDK and configuration. Confirm the specific runner and versions your test suite uses in Percy’s documentation. | Whether the required integration works in your language, runner, CI, and version combination. |
| Browser coverage | Applitools describes its Ultrafast Grid as rendering viewport/browser combinations in parallel; treat this as a product description rather than a head-to-head speed result. Applitools responsive testing | Percy documents browser selection and managed rendering. Browser compatibility and mobile browser access can depend on configuration or plan. Percy cross-browser testing Percy visual testing on mobile browsers | The actual browser, operating system, device, and rendering versions your users require. |
When Applitools Eyes is a better fit
Consider Eyes when its SDK fits your existing test framework and you want to evaluate the vendor’s multi-breakpoint workflow and Visual AI review together. Applitools says teams can capture mobile, tablet, and desktop viewports in one test and update baselines across affected viewports. Validate that workflow on your own pages: product descriptions alone do not establish how many false positives or missed changes your team will encounter.

Before selecting an SDK, check Applitools’ SDK documentation for your framework and language. The available integration and usage details can vary, so do not assume every SDK supports an identical setup.
When Percy is a better fit
Percy may suit teams comfortable with DOM snapshots and configured server-side rendering at selected widths. The model is straightforward for pages whose responsive appearance comes from CSS applied to the captured DOM and assets. If JavaScript changes the DOM or content at different widths, follow Percy’s responsive DOM capture guidance and verify the exact SDK and configuration requirements before designing the suite.
#1 Best Overall
Percy’s documented compatibility page lists up to ten widths per snapshot, ranging from 120 to 2,000 pixels, for the browser families it covers, along with maximum page heights. Check the live browser compatibility and maximum dimensions documentation against your target pages and current configuration; these limits should not be assumed to cover every browser or device combination.
How responsive coverage affects usage and cost
Percy: count the browser-width combinations
Percy counts each browser and responsive-width combination as a screenshot toward usage, even when the interface groups the results as fewer snapshots. Its billing documentation’s example is two pages across two browsers and three widths: that is 12 screenshots. It also documents a free plan with 5,000 monthly screenshots; paid-tier limits and overage charges depend on the plan. Confirm current terms on Percy plans and billing before estimating spend.

Applitools: do not equate checkpoints with screenshots
At the time reflected by the cited pricing page, Applitools displayed a Starter plan at $667 per month, paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints. Its page also described cross-browser and device testing and CI/CD integrations in that plan. This is a volatile vendor price and allowance, not a like-for-like comparison with Percy screenshots; verify the live Applitools pricing page before budgeting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor either product, estimate using your page or component count, number of widths and browsers, run frequency, retention requirements, and other plan limits. Percy screenshots and Applitools checkpoints are different billing units; do not compare their raw counts as if they measured the same thing.

A practical proof of concept
Run the same small suite in both services. Include a conventional fluid page and at least one page where content or DOM changes at a breakpoint. Use the same target widths, browsers, and CI workflow so the comparison reflects your needs rather than different test inputs.
- Choose representative pages, including a mobile navigation or conditional component whose DOM changes across widths.
- Set the width and browser matrix your team genuinely needs, then record the configured combinations and each product’s usage units.
- Introduce controlled changes: remove a menu, create an overlap, force text wrapping, and make one intentional redesign.
- Compare capture reliability, whether each change is detected, noisy diffs, review and approval steps, baseline maintenance, and time spent setting up the integration.
- Check browser coverage and current plan terms against the same expected run frequency and retention needs.
This is an evaluation method, not a claim that either service has been independently benchmarked here. Official vendor documentation explains their respective workflows, but it does not establish a universal speed or accuracy winner.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for screenshot capture, not a direct visual-regression replacement
If your immediate need is to capture a website image or PDF through an API or an AI-agent tool—not to maintain visual baselines and review diffs—try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, so it addresses a different job from Eyes or Percy’s hosted visual-regression review workflows.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use screenshot capture alone to approve responsive UI changes?
Not by itself: capturing an image does not provide the visual-baseline and diff-review workflow described for Eyes and Percy. Choose a capture API when you need images or PDFs, and a visual-regression service when you need change detection and approval.
