Applied Intuition’s published engineering interview format pairs a 45-minute coding screen without AI with an onsite that combines system design and an AI-assisted prototype. The onsite includes a 45-minute design discussion, a two-hour build using an AI model and frameworks of the candidate’s choice, and a panel demo and discussion. The company describes this format for engineering hiring; candidates should confirm their own role’s stages and tool rules with their recruiter.
What Applied Intuition publicly describes for engineering interviews
In a July 22, 2026 engineering post, Applied Intuition says it moved away from an onsite based entirely on no-AI coding and whiteboarding after changing how its own organization works with AI coding agents. Its published process has two distinct parts: a no-AI technical phone screen and an AI-enabled onsite exercise. Applied Intuition’s description of its engineering interview format is the primary source for these stages.

How the stages differ
| Stage | Time | Permitted tools | Task | What the company says it assesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical phone screen | 45 minutes | No AI | Coding task | Understanding of code independent of AI; the company says engineers remain responsible for the code they produce. |
| Onsite system-design discussion | 45 minutes | Not specified for this discussion | Open-ended system-design problem, usually derived from a problem Applied Intuition has faced | Engineering judgment and the candidate’s approach to the problem. |
| Onsite prototype build | Two hours | Any AI model and frameworks of the candidate’s choice | Build a working prototype of the system discussed | Technical quality and engineering judgment, while giving candidates a feel for the work. |
| Panel demo and discussion | Not stated | Not stated | Demonstrate the prototype and discuss implementation decisions and possible changes | How the candidate understands and evaluates their implementation. |
The company’s engineering post does not state a separate time limit for the demo and discussion. Nor does it list specific AI products or frameworks as required; it says candidates may choose their AI model and frameworks for the prototype.
What the AI-enabled exercise means in practice
AI assistance is permitted for the prototype, but the task is not simply to produce code with a model. The candidate must build a working system, then explain implementation decisions and what they would change. The no-AI phone screen separately tests coding without that assistance, reflecting the company’s stated view that AI fluency matters but is only one part of engineering work.

A useful preparation focus is therefore to be ready to discuss the code and the system it implements: what you asked the model to help with, what you accepted or changed, and why you chose a particular design. These are practical ways to prepare for the stated demo and discussion, not additional requirements published by the company.
Does every Applied Intuition candidate get this process?
No. The published account is specifically about engineering interviews, while the company’s careers listings span software, embedded, research, test, and other roles. The public description does not establish that every engineering candidate—or candidates in other job families, locations, or seniority levels—will receive the same sequence.

Candidate-submitted accounts also differ. For example, Glassdoor includes a September 2026 account of a one-hour technical interview involving a whiteboard question and implementation in an empty coding IDE, alongside another account describing recruiter, hiring-manager, and onsite panel stages. These are individual reports and may concern different roles or hiring cycles; they do not replace the company’s published account. Glassdoor’s candidate-submitted interview reports are best treated as anecdotes, not a process guarantee.
Before scheduling, ask your recruiter which stages apply to your specific role and whether AI tools are allowed in each exercise. Confirm the permitted environment and tools rather than assuming the onsite rules carry over to the phone screen—or that the published engineering format applies to your opening.

What the company’s trial figure does—and does not—show
Applied Intuition says it tried the new format in “over 30 real onsite interviews.” That is the company’s reported count of trial interviews, not an independent study of hiring accuracy, candidate outcomes, or whether the approach predicts job performance. The post explains the company’s intentions for the format; it does not provide independent validation of those outcomes.
