For many PC gamers, 144 Hz is a practical step up from 60 Hz; 60 Hz can be enough for general use or a tight budget, while 240 Hz makes the most sense for fast competitive games when your PC can sustain very high frame rates. The right choice depends on what you play and what your system can deliver—not simply the biggest number on a monitor’s box.
What do Hz and FPS mean?
Hz describes how many times per second a display refreshes. FPS describes how many frames per second the computer—particularly its graphics processor—renders. As NVIDIA explains, they measure different parts of the system: the display’s refresh rate and the system’s frame output.

A 144 Hz monitor is capable of refreshing up to 144 times per second, but it does not make a game run at 144 FPS. If a game is rendering at 60 FPS, the monitor cannot create the missing rendered frames. Conversely, a PC may render more frames than a fixed-refresh display can show.

| Refresh rate | Time between refreshes | Where it can make sense |
|---|---|---|
| 60 Hz | About 16.67 ms | General use, slower-paced games, or a budget-constrained setup. |
| 144 Hz | About 6.94 ms | A balanced gaming upgrade when the PC can render more frames than a 60 Hz setup typically shows. |
| 240 Hz | About 4.17 ms | Fast competitive games and systems capable of delivering very high frame rates. |
The intervals are calculated as 1 divided by the refresh rate. They describe the time between display refreshes, not total system latency or input lag. Moving from 144 Hz to 240 Hz shortens that interval by less than the move from 60 Hz to 144 Hz, so the practical benefit depends on your games, frame rates, and display behavior.

Is 144 Hz worth it over 60 Hz?
It can be, particularly if you play games where smoother motion and more frequent visual updates are useful, and your PC can render at higher frame rates. At matched 60 FPS/Hz and 240 FPS/Hz, NVIDIA’s comparison illustrates four animation steps at 240 for each one at 60. That is a simplified example, not a promise that a particular computer or game will reach 240 FPS or that every player will experience a fourfold real-world improvement.
For many gaming setups, 144 Hz is a sensible middle ground: it offers a shorter interval between display updates than 60 Hz without making 240 Hz performance the target. If your system struggles to render above 60 FPS in the games you care about, a higher maximum refresh rate alone will not deliver its full potential.

When is 240 Hz worth considering?
Consider 240 Hz when you play fast competitive games, value the additional opportunity for frequent updates, and your computer can produce high frame rates at the resolution and settings you intend to use. The GPU and CPU, game, settings, and synchronization all affect whether the system can keep up. A monitor’s advertised maximum is a capability, not a guarantee of game performance.

Refresh rate is also not the same as motion clarity. Pixel transitions and backlight techniques affect perceived blur. NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 material describes a backlight-strobing approach; its “effective motion clarity” language should not be read as a universal conversion between strobing and refresh rate.

How do V-SYNC and variable refresh rate affect the choice?
When the frame rate and a fixed display refresh do not align, tearing can occur. NVIDIA notes that V-SYNC can remove tearing but may add input delay. Variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies instead synchronize compatible display refreshes with incoming frame rates within a supported range. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing compatible displays and graphics hardware to reduce or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and stutter.
VRR is not automatic across every monitor and PC. For FreeSync, AMD specifies a compatible display, compatible graphics hardware, and a current driver. Check the exact monitor’s VRR range and compatibility with your graphics card and connection. If frame rates fall below the display’s minimum VRR range, low-framerate compensation (LFC) may duplicate frames so the display can remain synchronized. AMD’s example for a 60–144 Hz display uses a 40 FPS frame displayed at 80 Hz; that is an illustration of the technology, not a guarantee for every product.

- Realistic game FPS: Consider the games, resolution, and graphics settings you actually use. A high-refresh display cannot make the system render faster.
- Resolution and performance: Higher resolution can affect achievable frame rates, so assess the combination rather than the refresh-rate number alone.
- Motion and panel behavior: Pixel response and any backlight features influence perceived clarity as well as refresh rate.
- VRR support and range: Verify the monitor’s stated range, graphics-card compatibility, driver requirements, and connection support.
- Budget and intended use: Choose a rate that fits your workload and overall display priorities rather than paying for a maximum your system or games rarely use.
Specifications for individual monitors can help illustrate what to verify, but they do not establish a universal best buy. For example, NVIDIA’s CES 2024 announcement described the Alienware AW3225QF as a 32-inch 3840 × 2160 OLED monitor rated at 240 Hz with a stated 40–240 Hz VRR range. That dated announcement is not evidence of current price, availability, or best value.

- Choose 144 Hz if you want a substantial gaming-focused step up and your PC can render higher frame rates in the games you play.
- Choose 240 Hz if competitive high-FPS play is a priority and your PC can make use of the additional refresh capacity.
There is no refresh rate that is best for every reader. Compare what your system can deliver with the monitor’s resolution, panel and motion performance, VRR range, connectivity, and cost.
