What application development services mean
The term describes professional work to create or improve an application. It can cover clarifying requirements, analyzing needs, designing architecture and user experience, writing code, testing, releasing the application, and addressing issues or changes after launch.

Application development is often treated as part of a broader application lifecycle that includes governance, deployment, support, and maintenance. Microsoft’s application lifecycle management overview describes these connected activities. The scope can vary: one engagement might focus on implementation, while another supports planning through ongoing operation.

Common phases provide a useful map, but they are not a mandatory sequence. Teams may work iteratively, and activities can overlap. IBM outlines common SDLC phases as planning, analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Discovery and requirements: Identify users, problems to solve, business goals, constraints, data needs, integrations, and how success will be evaluated.
- Analysis and design: Define how the application should behave and how it will be structured. The design should fit its requirements and operating environment.
- Implementation: Build the application and connect the components, systems, or services it needs.
- Testing and assurance: Check that the application works as intended, satisfies requirements, and is ready for release. Testing can happen throughout development rather than only at the end.
- Deployment: Package the release and move it into the production environment so users can access it.
- Operation and improvement: Monitor performance, security, and user experience; fix issues; maintain the application; and deliver updates or other changes.
IBM’s SDLC overview and software development explanation describe these lifecycle activities. AWS notes that teams often test code as they write it, while maintenance can include bug fixes, customer issues, software changes, and monitoring. Microsoft likewise describes a cycle of planning, development, testing, deployment, operation, monitoring, and learning.
What does an application development company do?
A company may provide some or all of the lifecycle work, depending on the engagement. It may help define requirements, propose an architecture, build and test software, prepare a release, or support the application after launch. The phrase “application development company” does not establish that every one of these services is included.

Ask the provider to identify the work and deliverables for each stage. For example, “design” should be clarified as specific outputs and responsibilities, rather than assumed to include every architecture, interface, or documentation task the project might need.

Some projects use cloud-native architectures, loosely coupled microservices, managed databases, DevOps practices, and built-in monitoring. Microsoft presents these as possible elements of modern application development, not universal requirements. The right approach depends on the application’s needs and constraints; a project does not need these technologies simply because they are described as modern.

How security and privacy fit into the work
Security and privacy requirements should inform design and continue to be revisited as an application changes. Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle describes defining and tracking requirements based on factors such as the data handled, known threats, regulations, and industry requirements. It also describes threat modeling during design and adjustments as functionality and the threat landscape evolve. This is Microsoft’s account of its own SDL process, not a guarantee or certification that applies automatically to every provider.
What to clarify before hiring a provider
Use the proposal and statement of work to compare actual responsibilities, not just service labels. Ask for clear answers to these questions:
Rank #4
- Which lifecycle stages are included, and what deliverables will the provider supply for each?
- Who owns requirements, architecture, source code, testing, deployment, and documentation?
- Which systems, APIs, data stores, or existing applications must the work integrate with?
- What testing and security responsibilities are included, and how will findings be handled?
- Who deploys and monitors the application, and what support, maintenance, and change process applies after launch?
These answers establish the engagement’s scope. There is no universal definition of what every vendor bundles into application development services, and the lifecycle sources do not establish standard service prices or contract terms.
What happens after an app is launched?
Launch is not necessarily the end of the work. Depending on the agreement, post-release services can include monitoring, support, bug fixes, maintenance, and updates. Confirm who handles each responsibility, how users report problems, and how requested changes are assessed and delivered.
