Application Development Language: What It Means and How to Choose One

An application development language is a programming language used to build or extend software. The phrase is usually descriptive, but vendors may use it for a platform-specific technology.

An application development language is a programming language used to build or extend a software application. The phrase usually describes a language’s role, not one universally recognized language or a particular platform. In some contexts, however, it is a vendor-specific name: Tally uses it to describe Tally Definition Language (TDL).

What does “application development language” mean?

A programming language lets developers express instructions and application behavior in a form that software tools can process. Calling one an “application development language” generally means it is used to create an application or some part of one. The phrase alone does not identify a language, operating system, platform, or development tool. Computer Language Company’s definition uses the wording descriptively.

Is it a programming language?

Usually, yes: it is a functional description of a programming language’s use rather than the name of a single standardized language. Context is important, though. Tally’s documentation uses “application development language” as a specific label for Tally Definition Language: TDL is used to extend Tally and integrate it with external applications. That product-specific meaning should not be applied to the phrase in every context.

How does a language differ from a framework, runtime, or development environment?

A language expresses instructions or structure. A framework or runtime provides additional services, libraries, components, or conventions for building or executing software. A development environment packages tools used to create and maintain it. Vendors may group these concepts together, and the boundaries can blur in product descriptions.

For example, Microsoft describes .NET Framework as technology for building and running applications, while developers write applications in a language of their choice and use the framework’s runtime and class library. Microsoft’s .NET Framework overview explains that distinction. Tally, by contrast, describes TDL as both a language and a development platform.

What kinds of application work can a language support?

A language’s role depends on its design and the platform it targets. One may be used across several application layers, while another is designed for a particular product or environment.

Tally Definition Language

Tally describes TDL as a definition-based, action-driven language for extending Tally. Its documented uses include interface and data objects, rendering, data management, and integration. These capabilities concern the Tally platform; they are not a general specification for all application languages. See Tally’s overview of its technology.

Progress Advanced Business Language

Progress describes Advanced Business Language (ABL) as a high-level procedural and object-oriented language for enterprise business applications. Its documented application areas include user interfaces, database access, and business logic. ABL and TDL are distinct technologies with different platform contexts, not interchangeable names for the same language. See Progress’s ABL introduction for OpenEdge 13.0, updated February 11, 2026.

Which language should you use to develop an application?

Start with the application you need to build and where it must run. A language is a suitable choice only if it can work with the target platform, support the required features, and fit the project’s deployment and maintenance needs. Consider these factors:

  • Target platform and runtime: Confirm that the language runs in the required environment and is supported for the way the application will be deployed.
  • Application type and features: Check for the capabilities and libraries needed for the interface, data access, integrations, and business logic you plan to implement.
  • Tooling and compatibility: Consider the available development tools and whether the application must work with existing systems or data.
  • Team experience: Familiarity can affect how quickly a team can build, troubleshoot, and maintain the application.
  • Long-term maintenance: Assess whether the code and its dependencies will remain understandable and compatible as the application changes.

Choose a language that fits the target environment and project requirements rather than selecting one solely because it is described as an application development language. For applications built in a specific platform, that platform’s language and tooling may be the practical choice. Mendix’s advice to choose an app’s language up front is guidance for consistency across Mendix app elements, not a universal rule for every project; see its development best practices.

What should you learn before building an application?

Begin with the language and development tools supported by the platform you plan to use. Then learn the language basics alongside how that platform handles application structure, libraries, data, and deployment. Python.org’s Computer Programming for Everybody discusses programming education; it does not establish Python as the right choice for every application.

If you encounter the phrase in a product page or job description, check whether it refers broadly to programming work or specifically to a vendor’s technology. That distinction tells you whether you need general programming knowledge, experience with a particular platform, or both.
