If installation is included, run the basic checks the crew can safely perform. Seller procedures and reporting deadlines differ, so check the terms for your specific order before delivery and act promptly if anything is wrong.
What to check before you sign
- Ask to inspect the appliance before sign-off. If the delivery arrangement permits, have it unpacked so you can see the appliance rather than relying on the condition of its packaging. GE Appliances advises customers to inspect carefully before accepting and signing for delivery: GE Appliances delivery and installation guidance.
- Look over visible surfaces and edges. Check for dents, cracks, scratches, bent parts, and other visible defects. Inspect packaging as well, but intact packaging does not prove the appliance is undamaged. A phone light or good room lighting can help with dim areas; a separate flashlight is optional.
- Match the delivery to your order. Check the model and the items delivered against your order confirmation, and look for missing parts or accessories.
- Report issues while the delivery team is present. Tell the delivery agent immediately. Ask that the paperwork describe the problem specifically, and take clear photos of the appliance and packaging. Ask the seller what options are available, including whether refusal is an option under its procedure.
- Read the delivery record before signing. Do not sign a form that says there is no damage if that is not accurate; ask for the record to be corrected or for the issue to be noted. Keep a copy of the paperwork you sign. A phrase such as “subject to inspection” is not a guaranteed way to preserve a claim unless your seller confirms it.
If the driver cannot wait for a full operating test, prioritize the visible-condition check, model and item match, and written notice of any problem. Contact the seller promptly to confirm what to do next.

Should you sign for an appliance with damage?
There is no single acceptance process established for every seller or every jurisdiction. Depending on the seller’s rules and the situation, refusing a damaged delivery may be the simplest option; another seller may offer a different process. Before deciding, report the issue, document it, and ask the seller or delivery contact what options apply to your order. Walmart’s Marketplace major-appliance guide, for example, tells customers to inspect and notify the seller, but options are subject to seller procedures: Walmart Marketplace major appliances purchase and returns guide.

Basic checks if installation is included
Test only what the service you purchased includes and what can be checked safely at delivery. Follow the appliance’s instructions and defer to the installation crew on model-specific operation.
- Refrigerator: Check the interior light and, where connected and included in the installation, the water dispenser.
- Range or microwave: Check the controls and heating function as appropriate to the model and installation.
- Dishwasher: Check the controls, filling, and draining if the installation service and setup allow.
- Washer: Check the controls, hot- and cold-water filling, and draining if included in the setup.
- Dryer: Check the controls and heating function if the service permits.
GE Appliances lists these kinds of checks in its delivery and installation guidance. The work that can be performed depends on the service ordered, appliance, location, and local requirements.

What may not work immediately
Some functions need time after delivery. GE Appliances says a refrigerator can take up to 24 hours to reach its set temperature, and an icemaker may take 12 to 24 hours to begin making ice. Those are manufacturer timing estimates, not a reason by themselves to declare the appliance defective during the delivery visit. Check the manual for your model’s instructions.

These examples show why you should check the actual seller’s policy immediately. For a dispute or late-discovered issue, contact the seller or delivery contact promptly, explain what happened, and state the resolution you want.

Save the order confirmation, receipt, signed delivery paperwork, warranty information, photos, and messages. Keep notes of calls and copies of written communications, including dates and the names or departments you contacted. The FTC also advises consumers to keep purchase documents and check return terms and deadlines; its warranty guidance explains the role of receipts and contacting sellers or manufacturers: problem-resolution guidance and warranty guidance.
