It works only when you give it the exact brand as printed on the rating plate and the complete serial number. Even then, the result is not always a single year. Many manufacturers reuse the same date letters or digits on a fixed cycle, so the tool may return several candidate years, an estimate, or no date at all. Reading those labels correctly matters as much as getting the serial number right.
How to run a lookup
- Find the rating plate. Appliage points users to the metal or printed label around a door opening, on the back or side of the unit, or behind a removable access panel. If you cannot find it, the owner’s manual usually states the exact location for your model.
- Select the brand exactly as it appears on the plate. Brand names that look similar can belong to different product families with different date rules, so match the plate rather than the name you normally use.
- Copy the serial number character for character. Keep leading letters, zeros, spaces, and any revision suffix. Dropping a leading zero or a letter can move the code into a different rule or into no rule at all.
- Add the model number if you have it. The model number can separate repeated year codes and, on Kenmore and Sears products, identify the actual manufacturer behind the model prefix.
- Read the result label before you read the year. Keep any uncertainty the tool reports. A range of possible years is a correct answer for a repeating code, not a failed lookup.
Why one serial number can return several years
There is no universal serial-number format for home appliances. Appliage’s reference covers several families of codes, and each one encodes the date differently. Some use letters for month and year, some use two-digit year and month, some use a year-ending digit and a production week, and some use a separate date field. The table below summarizes the families described in Appliage’s reference material.

| Code family | How the date is encoded | Repeat cycle | What the model number helps with |
|---|---|---|---|
| GE, Café, Monogram | Two letters: month and year | Year letters repeat every 12 years | Choosing among candidate years |
| Whirlpool | Nine-character serial: factory code, year digit, production week | Year digit repeats every 10 years | Identifying which decade fits the model |
| Frigidaire, Electrolux family | Ten-character serial: maker/type, year-ending digit, production week | Year-ending digit repeats by decade | Deciding the decade when the digit alone is ambiguous |
| Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau | Four-digit FD number giving year and month; E-Nr identifies the model and Z-Nr identifies the individual unit | Not stated in the reference | Confirming the model behind the FD date |
| Kenmore, Kenmore Elite, Sears | Model prefix identifies the actual manufacturer, whose serial rule then applies | Depends on the manufacturer’s rule | Required to choose the correct rule |
These are illustrations of the rule types, not a substitute for checking your brand, appliance type, country, and serial format. Manufacturers also revise their coding over time, so the manufacturer’s own documentation is the final reference when a result matters.
GE, Café, and Monogram: the 12-year cycle
GE Appliances’ support guidance for Café states that the first two letters of the serial number encode month and year, and that the year letters repeat every twelve years. Its published example, “GA,” can mean April 2001, April 2013, or April 2025. Monogram’s guidance gives the same warning for “GA,” listing April 2001 and April 2013, and recommends checking the owner’s manual or contacting the manufacturer when the year is still uncertain. GE’s guidance also makes the key practical point directly: to determine age, use the serial number rather than the model number to identify the date of manufacture.

Whirlpool and LG: the 10-year digit
Appliage describes modern Whirlpool serials as nine characters that combine a factory code, a year digit, and a production week. Because the year digit repeats every ten years, a single digit cannot tell a 2016 unit from a 2026 unit without another clue. The model number is the usual tiebreaker, since it can show which decade the model was actually sold in. LG’s year digits follow the same ten-year repetition, according to the same reference.
Frigidaire and Electrolux: week and year-ending digit
Appliage’s reference describes ten-character formats in this family, where specific positions encode the maker or product type, a year-ending digit, and a production week. The year digit alone leaves the decade open, so the model number may be needed to settle it.

Bosch, Thermador, and Gaggenau: the FD date
Bosch-family appliances carry a separate four-digit FD number that encodes year and month. Do not confuse it with the other identifiers on the plate. The E-Nr identifies the model, and the Z-Nr identifies the individual unit. Use the FD number for the date, and use the E-Nr when you need to confirm which model you are looking at.
Kenmore and Sears: the model prefix decides the rule
Kenmore, Kenmore Elite, and Sears appliances were largely built by other manufacturers. The model prefix identifies the maker, and that maker’s serial rule is the one that applies. If you enter a Kenmore serial without the model number, the tool may not know which rule to use.

Reading the result labels
Appliage uses four result types. Each one tells you how much weight to give the year shown.
- Confirmed: The date is supported by model and serial records for that appliance.
- Estimated: The tool has a likely reading from the code rule, but the date is not confirmed for the individual machine.
- Candidates or possible dates: The code repeats, and more than one year fits. Use the model number, or check the manufacturer, to narrow the list.
- No date: The tool cannot produce a date. Common causes are a serial and model that conflict, a brand or product family without a usable rule, or a serial that has been mistyped.
What the underlying records can and cannot show
Appliage says its model records come from manufacturer pages, catalogs, service documents, government energy records, and certification directories. These sources help establish when a model was available on the market. They do not give the build date of an individual machine. A model that was sold from 2014 to 2019 can still produce a serial from any year in that window, and the lookup works from the serial rule, not from the sales history.

Appliage describes its coverage as 82 supported brands and 391,252 models on file, both as of 2026. These are figures the provider displays on its own site. They have not been independently audited, and this article does not treat them as a measure of accuracy.
How far back the lookup reaches
The reference material does not state an earliest manufacture year that Appliage covers. The practical limit is the code rule for your brand: if the manufacturer’s scheme predates the rule the tool uses, you will see “No date” or a wide range of candidates. For older equipment, the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s support line are the reliable next steps.

Using age in a repair-or-replace decision
An age lookup gives context, not a verdict. It can tell you whether a warranty period has likely ended, or how old a used appliance you are considering is. It cannot diagnose a fault, estimate the remaining life of a component, or price a repair. Appliage itself says age is only one part of a repair-or-replace decision, alongside the fault, the repair cost, and the condition of the unit.
How to compare any serial decoder
If you are choosing between decoders, or deciding whether to trust one result, check these points:
- Whether the brand and product family in the tool match the plate you are reading
- The date precision it returns: month, week, or year
- How it handles codes that repeat, and whether it lists candidate years
- Whether a model number can settle the decade or the maker
- How it labels confirmed dates compared with estimates
- Whether it returns an explicit “No date” result for unsupported or conflicting input rather than forcing a year
- Whether its rules trace back to manufacturer documentation
Appliage’s stated approach meets several of these checks: it labels uncertain cases and does not always force a single date. Its brand rules are presented as its own reference, so treat its coverage claims as the provider’s statements, and confirm any year that matters with the manufacturer.
