For buyers who want blood pressure measured from the wrist with a built-in mechanical cuff, the Huawei Watch D3 is a credible successor to the WATCH D2. Its headline addition is blood-pressure measurement before and after exercise, and reviewers report a noticeably slimmer case. For anyone who mainly wants a comfortable everyday smartwatch, the case for upgrading is weaker: the airbag strap is still a compromise, one early review reported repeated poor ECG signal problems, and launch pricing is premium.
What the WATCH D2 already offered
The D2 already combined a mechanical airbag in the strap with blood-pressure measurement. Huawei describes the airbag as 26.5 mm wide and says the strap can be removed and replaced through its quick-release mechanism. The D2 also carries ECG, pulse-wave arrhythmia analysis, a multi-indicator Health Glance, and compatibility with iOS and Android. Huawei lists up to six days of typical battery life, falling to up to one day with ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring (ABPM) enabled. Those figures depend on the test routine defined on Huawei’s specification page, so they describe a controlled use pattern rather than a guarantee for every wearer.

What the D3 adds
Huawei’s central claim for the D3 is measurement before and after exercise, alongside the resting and ambulatory modes the D2 already had.
Before and after exercise
Huawei says the exercise blood-pressure feature meets relevant ISO standards and that the blood-pressure modes are CE-marked. A pre-launch Huawei announcement goes further and calls the D3 the world’s first device to meet the relevant ISO standards for blood-pressure monitoring in connection with exercise. Treat that as a manufacturer claim. It is not an independent verdict, and the sources reviewed do not include third-party validation of the exercise readings.

Resting and ambulatory monitoring
Resting measurement and ABPM carry over from the D2. The practical change for ambulatory users is battery life, which is covered in its own section below.

Size and comfort
T3 measures the D3 at 11.3 mm thick, against 13.3 mm for the D2, and pairs the case with a 1.92-inch AMOLED display. A thinner body sits more easily under a sleeve, but the mechanical airbag is still part of the strap. TechRadar’s reviewer says the airbag still affects comfort compared with an ordinary smartwatch. That is a property of the cuff design, so a slimmer case reduces the bulk without removing the trade-off. Buyers who mainly want a light watch for all-day wear should weigh this before anything else.

The D2 supports ECG. TechRadar’s reviewer reported repeated poor signal issues during ECG measurements on the D3. This is one reviewer’s experience with one unit, not a universal finding, and it does not establish how common the problem is. If ECG is central to your purchase, buy from a retailer with a clear return policy and run several ECG recordings in the first days of ownership.

Battery life under blood-pressure monitoring
Huawei’s D2 figures are up to six typical days, and up to one day with ABPM enabled. T3 reports that ambulatory monitoring brings the D3’s battery down to around one day. Huawei’s D3 battery figures were not confirmed in the sources reviewed, so do not assume the D3 matches the D2’s specifications. If you plan regular ambulatory sessions, expect to charge the watch daily.

What the health features can and cannot tell you
Huawei states that the blood-pressure feature is intended to support everyday wellbeing monitoring. In its Denmark launch announcement, the company says: “Please note that the blood pressure measurement feature is intended to support users in monitoring their everyday wellbeing. It is not intended to replace an assessment by a healthcare professional or to be used as a clinical tool for diagnosing health conditions.” The pre-launch announcement adds that the monitor is not intended to detect heart attacks, arrhythmias, or other life-threatening conditions.

Certification and standards claims are not the same as clinical validation. The sources reviewed do not include conformity documentation, a clinical validation report, or a study comparing D3 readings with a reference cuff. TechRadar’s reviewer did not compare readings against a dedicated cuff. Treat watch readings as something to discuss with a clinician, not as a diagnosis, and use a validated upper-arm monitor if you need to check the watch against a standard measurement.
Who should buy which model
- Choose the D3 if you want blood pressure logged before and after exercise from a wrist device, you accept the airbag strap, and the regional price fits your budget.
- Choose the D2 or wait if your main need is resting and ambulatory blood pressure plus ECG, and the exercise mode does not justify the D3’s premium price in your market.
- Look elsewhere if you want a comfortable general-purpose smartwatch. The cuff strap is the defining compromise of both models, and the D3 reduces its bulk without removing it.
The D3 is a meaningful successor for the narrow buyer it targets. For everyone else, the improvements are real but the trade-offs are unchanged.
