Apple’s Siri AI Is Rolling Out in Beta: How It Compares With ChatGPT

Apple’s Siri AI beta brings a more conversational assistant to supported Apple devices, but availability varies and no verified test shows it beats ChatGPT.

Apple’s new assistant is called Siri AI, and Apple says its English-language beta began rolling out in September 2026 as part of Apple Intelligence. The company describes a more conversational Siri that can work with personal and on-screen context and take a larger role across Apple devices. That makes it a competitor to ChatGPT in a broad sense, but there is no verified head-to-head evidence that Siri AI matches or outperforms it.

What Apple announced about Siri AI

Apple introduced Siri AI as part of Apple Intelligence at WWDC on June 8, 2026, describing the product and its planned capabilities. On September 14, Apple said the beta was rolling out in English across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. The June announcement and September rollout update describe different points in the timeline. See Apple’s June announcement and September update.

Apple says the assistant is designed to handle more natural conversations and use context across its operating systems. Its announced capabilities include visual understanding, improved dictation, and a dedicated Siri app where users can start or revisit conversations. Apple also says the app syncs conversation history across a user’s Apple devices through iCloud; that is Apple’s description of its service design, not an independent assessment of its privacy properties.

Apple’s developer presentation describes natural-language tools for editing and writing emails, texts, and documents. These are vendor-described features, not independently established performance results. Apple’s WWDC 2026 developer presentation provides further detail on the planned interaction model.

Does Siri AI work like ChatGPT?

Both are conversational AI assistants, but Apple presents Siri AI as integrated into its own devices and software, with access to system context and the ability to interact with Apple features. ChatGPT is a separate assistant and service. The announced overlap in conversational interaction does not establish that the products answer equally well or have the same capabilities.

Apple describes Apple Intelligence as using on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, and it names Apple Foundation Models in its materials. Apple’s announcements do not identify Gemini as the production model powering Siri AI. TechCrunch has reported a Google/Gemini collaboration on Apple’s Foundation Models and characterized those models as not simply a rebranded Gemini; that is reporting about the collaboration, not a full technical disclosure from Apple. TechCrunch’s report provides that account.

MacRumors has reported that code demonstrations suggest Apple’s architecture may support delegating requests to, or replacing its model with, third-party options such as Claude or ChatGPT. The report says those mechanisms are not generally available to users or open to third parties, so they should not be treated as launched Siri features. MacRumors’ report describes the code findings.

Which devices support Siri AI?

Apple’s September 2026 compatibility list includes these device categories. Support for Siri AI generally does not mean that every capability runs on every listed device.

Device category Apple’s stated compatible hardware
iPhone iPhone 16 models or later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
iPad iPad mini with A17 Pro, and iPads with M1 or later
Mac Mac with M1 or later
Apple Vision Pro Apple Vision Pro
Apple Watch Specified Apple Watch models; some require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby

Apple separately says its most advanced on-device model, expressive voice, and dictation features have narrower hardware requirements than general access. Check the device requirement for the specific feature you want rather than assuming all Siri AI capabilities are available on every compatible product. Apple’s compatibility details list the supported categories and qualifications.

When is Siri AI available in your country?

Apple said the beta rollout began in English. Its September update said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support was coming the following month. Feature availability can vary by language and region, so a supported device alone does not guarantee access to every feature in every location.

Apple said Siri AI was initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS in the European Union, while EU users could access it on macOS and visionOS. In a June 8 notice, Apple attributed the iPhone and iPad delay to the Digital Markets Act and said there was no timeline for availability on those platforms at that point. That is Apple’s explanation of the issue, not a neutral finding by a regulator. Apple executive Craig Federighi said: “We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year.” Apple’s June EU notice attributes the statement to Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

Apple’s September update also said Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features would not be available in China while the company worked through regulatory requirements. Availability elsewhere may still differ by language, region, platform, and feature.

Are there usage limits?

Apple says some server-side Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, have daily usage limits. It says limits can vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand, and other factors. Apple has not specified a quota or price in the cited September update; it says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.

What would a fair Siri AI–ChatGPT comparison measure?

The reviewed announcements do not provide a controlled comparison or benchmark showing that Siri AI matches or beats ChatGPT. A meaningful comparison would need to test both systems on the same prompts and account for differences in device, account, language, region, and available features. Relevant measures include:

  • Answer quality on identical questions and tasks.
  • How accurately each assistant uses personal information and what is on screen.
  • Whether it can complete operating-system actions, not just describe how to do them.
  • Which devices, platforms, languages, and regions can access the tested features.
  • How each service handles data and which tasks run on-device or on servers.

Until comparable tests are available, “compete with ChatGPT” describes the market context, not a demonstrated performance result.
