Apple’s Long-Delayed HomeView Was Already Being Tested in 2024

MacRumors says Apple’s HomeView was already in regulatory testing in October 2024. The 7-inch, $299 smart-home hub was delayed by unfinished Siri and App Intents work and is scheduled for November 13, 2026.

Yes. MacRumors reported on October 14, 2026, that Apple’s HomeView smart display had already undergone regulatory testing in October 2024. The evidence was an FCC document reviewed by contributor Aaron Perris, although the FCC page currently visible for Apple model A3218 shows applications and grants dated October 13, 2026—not the earlier test date.

What the 2024 testing report actually shows

MacRumors says Apple was testing HomeView with software that would now be identified as HomeView version 18 in October 2024. That places the product in regulatory work before Apple publicly announced it on October 13, 2026.

The date needs a precise qualification. The currently visible FCC ID page for model A3218 lists 2026 applications and grants. It does not itself display an October 2024 filing. The 2024 date comes from MacRumors’ account of an earlier FCC document, so it should not be presented as a date plainly shown on today’s FCC page.

Why Apple delayed HomeView

The delay appears tied to the same unfinished Siri upgrade that Apple previewed at WWDC 2024. Apple described a more capable Siri that could understand personal context and perform actions across apps, but MacRumors reported that Apple said in March 2025 that the improved assistant needed more time.

That timing matters because HomeView is designed to be operated largely by voice. In July 2025, 9to5Mac reported that the hub also depended on a new version of App Intents, the framework that lets Siri invoke precise functions inside applications. The report quoted Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman saying the product was unlikely to arrive in 2025 and was instead expected alongside the new Siri in 2026.

What HomeView can do

A shared screen that becomes personal

Apple positions HomeView as a screen for everyone in a household rather than a private tablet. When it recognizes a user’s face, it can switch from the shared home view to that person’s experience. Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak described the goal this way: “Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user.”

Apple says recognition can surface personal content such as Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, Reminders and Find My. The company’s description says the device recognizes your face, fills the room with sound, keeps you connected through FaceTime and controls the smart home. Face recognition therefore affects access to information, not merely the visual theme on screen.

Communication, media and everyday apps

TechCrunch reports that HomeView includes Apple apps such as Calendar, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, Notes, Reminders, Music and Podcasts. Apple also lists Apple TV, photo viewing and hands-free automations among its uses. The front camera supports FaceTime and helps identify household members, while the microphones and speakers make voice requests and room-filling audio central to the design.

Home monitoring and device control

HomeView can display camera feeds and control compatible cameras, thermostats, lights and locks. Apple says it works with Apple Home Collection cameras and thermostats, as well as a lock developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. It also supports other Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories, so compatibility depends on the specific accessory and its software support.

How HomeView differs from a conventional smart speaker

The product combines several roles that are often separate: a wall- or tabletop-mounted screen, a voice assistant, a FaceTime endpoint, a personal-information display and a smart-home controller. Its household recognition is intended to keep a common device from exposing one person’s calendar, messages or reminders to everyone else.

The main limitation before launch is that Apple has not published every operational detail. Siri’s supported languages, the complete regional rollout, accessory availability and the final list of third-party apps may vary by market and could change before or after November 13.

What the testing history means for buyers

The 2024 regulatory work suggests that the hardware was mature enough for formal compliance testing long before Apple considered the software experience ready. The reported delay was not framed as a cancellation or hardware redesign; it was linked to the reliability and control promised by the next-generation Siri and App Intents.

For buyers, the practical question is whether the shipping Siri can perform the precise, cross-app actions that make a voice-first hub useful. Apple has confirmed the device, price and announced date, but detailed demonstrations of every Siri action and the full accessory matrix remain subject to Apple’s final software and regional disclosures.

Availability and price caveats

  • Price: $299 is Apple’s announced U.S. starting price, not a worldwide price.
  • Timing: Preorders opened October 13, 2026; availability is announced for November 13, 2026.
  • Accessories: Apple Home Collection cameras, thermostats, locks, wall mounts and power connectors may have separate availability and pricing.
  • Compatibility: Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories, but support can depend on the accessory, software version and region.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
