What iPhone Duo is—and when it arrives
Apple introduced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, describing it as its first foldable iPhone. The device is designed to work as a conventional phone when closed and open into a larger screen for multitasking, video, reading, and other roomy layouts. Apple’s launch schedule calls for preorders on October 16 and initial availability on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions; 28 additional markets are scheduled to follow on October 30. How the two displays differ
The outer display measures 5.4 inches; unfolding the phone reveals a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says the outer panel has 90% of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro and the inner panel is 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Those are Apple’s comparisons, not an independent measurement. Both displays use Super Retina XDR, ProMotion, Always On, and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits, according to Apple.
Apple says the displays share an aspect ratio so content can scale between closed and open modes. That can make unfolding feel like expanding an existing app layout rather than switching to an unrelated screen, though the result depends on how each app handles the larger display.

What iOS 27 does on the larger screen
Apple says iOS 27 adapts to both display sizes and supports Split View for two apps, app pairs, and multiple windows of the same app. StandBy can run while the phone is not charging. Apple names Netflix, Zoom, and Slack among apps adapted for Duo. App behavior and availability may vary as developers update their software.
Apple Pencil with USB-C support is planned for later in 2026, not announced as a launch-day feature. Its exact timing and compatibility depend on Apple’s software rollout and accessory support.
Hardware, cameras, and construction
Apple lists the A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery architecture, and a custom vapor chamber. It claims up to 35% better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently established benchmark.

The rear camera system has a 48MP Fusion Main camera and an optical-quality 2x Telephoto. Apple also describes using the rear cameras for selfies with an outer-screen preview, as well as Dual Capture and FaceTime experiences. These features make the foldable layout relevant to framing and video calls, beyond simply providing a larger viewing area.
Apple describes a grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, and a hinge built from more than 100 components. The inner display uses protective layers and a nano-textured cover material. Apple has not supplied independent crease-visibility, drop-resistance, or hinge-longevity results in its announcement, so those construction details should be treated as manufacturer descriptions rather than proof of long-term durability.
Battery life: Apple’s figures depend on the screen used
Apple claims up to 24 hours of typical use per charge when the two displays are used equally. Its video-playback figures differ by screen: up to 31 hours on the inner display or up to 44 hours on the outer display. Apple says those tests used preproduction devices and software; actual battery results vary with use, configuration, network, signal, and other factors. These are company test claims, not independent real-world results.

Apple lists an IP68 rating under IEC 60529, tested under controlled conditions at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple cautions that resistance is not permanent, may decline through normal wear, and does not make liquid damage covered by warranty. Treat the rating as a description of tested conditions—not a promise that the phone is permanently waterproof.

Official accessories and timing
Apple announced two accessories, both scheduled to become orderable October 16 in the U.S. The iPhone Duo Case is $79, while the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129. The folio’s built-in stand is intended for uses such as viewing, reading, or FaceTime. Apple Pencil with USB-C is a separate future option, with support planned later in 2026 rather than at launch. Confirm current prices, availability, and compatibility in your region.
Who should consider a foldable iPhone?
iPhone Duo’s central trade-off is the choice between a smaller closed screen and a larger open workspace, at a substantial starting price. It may suit someone who would use Split View, app pairs, or a larger canvas for video and reading often enough to justify unfolding the phone. Someone who mainly wants a conventional phone experience may get less value from the inner display. The announcement establishes Apple’s specifications and claims, but not real-world battery performance, hinge life, crease visibility, or long-term buyer experience; those questions remain unanswered until independent use over time.
