Apple has not confirmed a 10-million-unit production plan for the foldable iPhone Duo. That figure comes from a secondary supply-chain report, while separate analyst estimates range from 8 million to 10 million units. Wall Street’s optimism rests on the Duo adding a high-priced product during a staggered iPhone launch, but reports that Apple cut iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max components have conflicting explanations rather than clear proof of weak demand.
What Apple announced on September 9
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Chief executive John Ternus said the device “will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone.” The Associated Press described a 7.6-inch display when unfolded, support for Apple Pencil, and split-screen multitasking. Apple calls it the largest display ever used on an iPhone.

The Duo starts at $1,999 and becomes available October 23, 2026. The conventional iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Preorders for those models begin September 12, with retail availability on September 18.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, called the Duo a distinctive addition to Apple’s lineup and its entry into the niche foldable-smartphone category. Wood said foldables represented less than 5% of the overall smartphone market, a market-level estimate rather than an Apple sales figure.

How many Duo units is Apple making?
The often-repeated “10 million” number is a report, not Apple guidance. China’s Securities Times, as relayed by 9to5Mac, said Apple increased Duo orders by 30%, potentially bringing production for the remainder of 2026 close to 10 million units. That describes a possible production target, not confirmed shipments or purchases by consumers.

| Source | Estimate | What it measures | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Securities Times report relayed by 9to5Mac | Close to 10 million | Potential production for the remainder of 2026 after a reported 30% order increase | Unconfirmed secondary report |
| J.P. Morgan | About 8.5 million | Duo units in the December quarter | Analyst forecast |
| Oppenheimer | 8 million to 10 million | Estimated Duo supply in 2026 | Analyst estimate |
TradingView repeated the approximately 10-million figure but warned that its page was AI-generated and could contain inaccuracies. That makes the number useful as an indicator of supply-chain expectations, not as evidence that Apple has committed to a specific output.
Why analysts raised Apple price targets
J.P. Morgan sees the Duo filling a launch gap
J.P. Morgan raised its Apple price target from $340 to $360 and kept an Overweight rating. Its thesis is that the Duo can partly offset the absence of the regular iPhone 18 during the staggered launch schedule. The firm still forecast roughly a 2% year-over-year decline in iPhone revenue for the December quarter, but expected total Apple revenue to grow about 2% in that quarter.

- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
J.P. Morgan also characterized reported Pro and Pro Max production reductions as normal annual adjustments rather than an unusual collapse in demand. Its separate forecast for about 8.5 million Duo units in the December quarter gives the bullish case a concrete, though unverified, volume assumption.
Other analysts remain positive but disagree on valuation
| Firm | Rating or target reported in September 2026 | Published rationale |
|---|---|---|
| J.P. Morgan | Overweight; target raised to $360 from $340 | Duo contribution during the staggered launch and confidence that Pro reductions are seasonal |
| Citi | Buy; $365 target | Retained its constructive view in an analyst roundup |
| Goldman Sachs | Constructive; target not stated | Pointed to $100 Pro-model price increases and a 2TB tier |
| Oppenheimer | Perform | Estimated 8 million to 10 million Duo supply this year |
| Needham analyst Laura Martin | Hold | Kept a cautious rating despite the new product |
Price targets are scenario-based forecasts, not promised share prices. The range of ratings shows that analysts agree the Duo is strategically important but do not agree on how much its sales, pricing, and margins justify today.

Do Pro Max production cuts prove weak demand?
Not by themselves. Nikkei Asia reporting, summarized by 9to5Mac, said Apple told selected suppliers to reduce component production for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max because of “soft demand.” Apple shares fell roughly 2.5% in early trading after that report.
AppleInsider reported a different interpretation from J.P. Morgan: the reductions were typical production adjustments, and demand for the iPhone 18 Pro was at least fractionally higher than demand for the iPhone 17 Pro. A supplier cut can reflect inventory balancing, component timing, production constraints, or a change in the product mix as well as weaker demand.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
The unresolved variables are material:
- Price elasticity: analysts cited a $100 increase for Pro models, which could make buyers more sensitive to price.
- Margins: expensive foldable components may create pressure even if the Duo sells well.
- Supply constraints: a component reduction can limit output without indicating that customers disappeared.
- Launch timing: the delayed base iPhone 18 changes the normal comparison between models and quarters.
The defensible conclusion is that cuts were reported, but their cause remains disputed. They are not conclusive evidence of a demand problem.

| Consideration | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $1,999 | $1,299 |
| Design | Foldable phone with a 7.6-inch unfolded display | Conventional large-screen iPhone |
| Multitasking | Split-screen workflow and Apple Pencil support reported by the Associated Press | Conventional iPhone interface; comparable foldable features not stated |
| Battery claim | Not stated in the launch details cited here | Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback |
| Camera and charging | Not stated in the launch details cited here | Associated Press reports camera and charging improvements |
| Availability | October 23, 2026 | September 18, 2026, after September 12 preorders |
| Primary uncertainty | First-generation foldable durability, supply, and real-world demand | Effect of higher pricing and the disputed production reductions |
The Duo costs $700 more at entry. That premium buys a different form factor and a larger working canvas, not simply a faster version of the Pro Max. The Pro Max offers earlier availability, a stated 45-hour video-playback claim, and a more familiar design, but its value depends on whether the higher Pro pricing is acceptable.
Which phone makes sense for different buyers?
Choose the Duo if the foldable format is the reason to upgrade
- You regularly use split-screen apps, document editing, or a stylus and will use the unfolded display.
- You accept first-generation hardware risk and can wait until October 23.
- The $1,999 starting price fits your budget without relying on unverified production or resale assumptions.
Choose the Pro Max if endurance and conventional use matter more
- You want the phone available in September rather than waiting for the Duo.
- Long video playback, camera improvements, and charging changes are more valuable than a folding screen.
- You prefer to avoid the supply and durability uncertainty attached to a new foldable category.
Use a simple buying check
- Decide whether you would still want a large conventional iPhone if the Duo’s novelty were removed.
- Compare the $700 starting-price difference with the accessories and storage you actually need.
- Wait for confirmed regional stock, warranty terms, and hands-on durability information before treating any production estimate as a reason to rush.
What to watch after launch
The most useful evidence will be Apple’s actual availability, delivery times, and reported sales rather than supplier rumors. Watch whether Duo demand produces sustained backorders, whether Pro Max inventory normalizes, and how Apple’s next financial update describes iPhone revenue during the staggered launch. Those data points will help distinguish a successful new category from a limited supply event and clarify whether the Pro production changes were routine or demand-driven.
