To make your brand’s public information easier for Apple’s systems to find and interpret, keep important page content crawlable, make page metadata and structured data agree with what visitors can see, and choose Applebot’s indexing and context controls deliberately. If you have an app, treat App Intents as a separate implementation path. Apple says crawled information may provide context for AI-generated output in Apple products and services, but it does not promise that any markup, robots rule, or app integration will earn a citation, inclusion, or higher ranking.
What Apple documents about Applebot and AI-generated answers
Apple’s Applebot guidance, published September 5, 2026, says information crawled by Applebot supports search experiences integrated into Spotlight, Siri, and Safari. Apple also says that crawled data may provide additional context and up-to-date content when AI models generate output for display in Apple products and services. Its examples include broad world-knowledge answers in Siri and Search that may link to source websites.

The key word is “may.” Apple does not describe a dedicated answer engine that uses every page, nor does it say that every Apple Intelligence feature draws on Applebot. There is no documented recipe in which a particular schema field guarantees an answer, citation, or ranking. Think of accessible, accurate brand information as a sound technical foundation—not a way to control what an AI-generated response says.

Choose the right route for your goal
| Route | Where the information lives | What Apple documents | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawlable pages with accurate metadata and structured data | Public website | Applebot supports Apple search experiences and may supply context for generated output. Apple’s archived App Search guide describes structured markup as a way to enrich search results. | The archived schema advice is from 2016; Apple does not guarantee a particular result or disclose a current comprehensive schema compatibility list. |
| Robots directives and page-level signals | Website robots.txt or page response | Controls can affect crawling, indexing, snippets and generated-answer context. A separate directive can opt crawled content out of training use. | The directives have different effects. A training opt-out does not itself remove a page from search. |
| App Intents and indexed app entities | Native app | Structured app actions and content can be made understandable to Apple Intelligence, Siri and Spotlight. | This requires app-side development; it is not a substitute for public website markup and does not expose private app data through website JSON-LD. |
For public web discovery, start with the website. For system discovery of app actions or app-owned content, assess app integration. A brand with both goals may need both routes.
Make public brand pages crawlable and coherent
Applebot respects standard robots.txt directives. If a robots.txt file does not mention Applebot but does specify Googlebot, Applebot follows the Googlebot instructions. Applebot does not follow crawl-delay. It adjusts its crawl activity to reduce impact when a site slows down or returns errors, and it caches crawled content.
Applebot may render pages in a browser. If scripts, stylesheets or other resources required for rendering are blocked, it may not render the page properly. Keep essential brand, product and service information available in crawlable page content, and make pages degrade cleanly when those resources are unavailable. Do not assume that content a visitor sees after a complex client-side interaction will necessarily be available in the same way to a crawler.
On each important public page, keep these elements aligned:

- Visible content: State what the organization, product or service is in the page itself. Keep material facts accessible without relying solely on blocked or fragile rendering resources.
- Title and description: Give the page an accurate title and description that reflect its actual subject. Avoid making the page metadata claim something the page does not establish.
- Structured data: Use Schema.org markup only for facts that are present and accurate on the page. Do not add invented ratings, prices or other claims to try to influence a result.
- Destinations: Make canonical page destinations and links work. Where a relevant app destination exists, provide a working deep link rather than a generic app landing page.
Apple’s archived App Search Programming Guide recommended discoverable, indexable sites, relevant deep links into apps, and structured data using Schema.org and Open Graph. It also described title, description and deep link as required for indexing an item in the App Search context it covered, and recommended a content-specific image. That is historical implementation advice, not proof of today’s complete requirements for every Apple surface.
Do not treat the archived schema list as a current specification
The archived guide, updated December 15, 2016, listed AggregateRating, Offers, PriceRange, InteractionCount, Organization, Recipe, SearchAction and ImageObject as supported structured-data types. Apple’s current Applebot page documents the paywall signal isAccessibleForFree, but does not provide a current comprehensive list of Schema.org types supported across all Apple search and generated-output experiences. The old list can help explain Apple’s historical guidance; it should not be presented as a verified current compatibility matrix or as a checklist every brand should implement.
The archived guide also pointed to an Apple App Search API validation tool. Because that recommendation comes from old guidance, verify that the tool is still available and applicable before relying on it. In any validation workflow, check what the crawler actually extracts rather than assuming that valid JSON-LD guarantees display or inclusion.
Understand what each Applebot control changes
Choose controls according to the intended treatment of each page. Indexing, snippets and generated-answer context are not the same as training use.

| Control | Effect Apple documents | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
noindex |
Applebot will not index the page; it will not appear in Spotlight or Siri Suggestions. | You want the page excluded from those indexed search experiences. |
nosnippet |
Applebot will not generate a description or web answer for the page, and will not use its data as additional context and up-to-date content when AI models generate output for Apple products and services. | You want to withhold that page’s content from snippets and the described generated-output context. |
nofollow |
Applebot will not follow links on the page. | You intend to prevent Applebot from following links on that page. |
Applebot-Extended in robots.txt |
This separate user agent controls whether already crawled content may be used to train Apple’s general-purpose foundation models. Apple says Applebot-Extended does not crawl webpages. Disallowing it does not by itself remove pages from search. | You want to opt out of training use without confusing that choice with a search-indexing or answer-context directive. |
For example, a page-level robots meta tag can express a standard directive such as <meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">. A robots.txt entry for the separate training crawler can be written as:
User-agent: Applebot-Extended
Disallow: /
These examples illustrate syntax, not a recommendation to apply a rule across an entire site. A sitewide disallow for Applebot-Extended is a broader training choice; it does not accomplish the same thing as adding noindex or nosnippet to a page. Review existing robots.txt rules and response headers before changing them, since rules can interact and may affect more pages than intended.
Mark paywalled pages accurately
Apple documents page-level Schema.org isAccessibleForFree in JSON-LD for identifying paywalled, metered or subscription content. When a page is not freely accessible, the value false tells Apple that the page remains eligible to appear in search, while its content will not be used as additional context when AI models generate output for Apple products and services. Apple says this signal is page-level; section-level hasPart markup is not supported for this purpose.

Use the signal to describe the page’s actual access status, not as a general preference setting. It does not replace indexing or training directives, and the stated effect should not be expanded into a claim about all uses of the page by Apple.

Keep website markup separate from app integration
Schema.org JSON-LD describes public web pages. App Intents schemas and indexed app entities are app-side structures for making app content and actions understandable to Apple’s system experiences. Adding markup to a marketing page does not expose private app content or make an app action available to Siri.
Apple’s developer documentation describes App Intents, entities and enums as ways to give the system structured types for app actions and content. Developers can index entities for Spotlight, use transferable types to move content across apps, associate visible views with entities, and donate actions or content. Apple says schemas act as a contract that helps Siri AI match actions and content to everyday language.
The app schema documentation describes the .system domain as including schemas for in-app search and content access, applicable broadly to apps that search or open content. Apple gives “Find bicycle.” and “Search for mountains.” as example utterances for natural-language app search; they are illustrations, not evidence about common queries or query volume.
If your brand has an app, decide what a user should be able to find or do through system experiences, then assess the relevant App Intents schemas and Spotlight entity indexing with app developers. If the goal is discovery of public brand information, audit the website independently. The two routes can complement each other, but they serve different data and tasks.

Use Apple’s training disclosure without overreading it
In a dataset disclosure dated September 9, 2026, Apple says its training data includes publicly available information crawled by Applebot, licensed or purchased third-party data, open-source data, user-study data and synthetic data. Apple says Applebot does not crawl login-protected or paywalled websites and respects standard robots.txt directives publishers use to restrict crawling or training use. It also describes quality filtering, text extraction, deduplication and other processing.
Apple describes the collective scale of its training data as trillions of individual data points. It says text data collection began in 2018 and image data collection began in 2020. Those are broad company disclosures, not independently measured counts of Applebot pages, brand records or search performance. They do not establish that a particular crawled page was used in a particular model, or that structured data changes training selection.
A practical audit sequence
- Inspect crawler rules and responses. Review robots.txt for Applebot-specific and Googlebot rules, and inspect page response headers and robots meta directives. Confirm that the effective rules match the intended treatment of each page.
- Check rendering. Test whether the primary page content remains available when required scripts, stylesheets or other resources cannot be rendered. Fix blocked dependencies that hide essential information.
- Reconcile page facts. Compare visible text, title, description, canonical destination and structured data. Correct stale or contradictory details, and remove markup that is not supported by the page.
- Choose controls by purpose. Decide separately whether each page should be indexed, used for snippets or generated-answer context, or excluded from training use. Do not use one directive as if it controlled all three.
- Identify access restrictions. For paywalled or metered pages, make sure page-level
isAccessibleForFreereflects the real access model. - Assess app work independently. If users should find app content or invoke app actions through Apple’s system experiences, evaluate App Intents and Spotlight indexing with the app team.
- Validate and measure cautiously. Check Apple’s currently available tooling rather than assuming an archived validation tool still applies. Monitor server logs and available analytics for Applebot activity and site outcomes, but do not attribute every visit, result or generated answer to a markup change. Apple’s documentation does not promise a complete report of generated-answer appearances.
To distinguish Applebot traffic in logs, Apple documents reverse-DNS verification under *.applebot.apple.com or matching an IP address against Apple’s published CIDR list. Use those checks rather than relying on a user-agent string alone.
