You don’t need to look up a universal PIN for an older Apple Wireless Keyboard. Start pairing from your Mac; if it asks for a passcode, type the code shown in the pairing prompt on the keyboard you’re setting up, then press Return on that same keyboard. Apple’s instructions describe this prompt-based process rather than a PIN to find in advance.
Where to find and enter the Apple Wireless Keyboard PIN
The passcode appears during the Mac’s Bluetooth pairing flow. Use the keyboard being paired to enter it; typing it on the Mac’s built-in keyboard or another input device is not the instruction Apple gives.

Turn on the earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard. A blinking LED indicates that it is ready to pair.

On the Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions), then open Bluetooth.

Select Connect when the keyboard appears.

If the pairing flow displays a passcode, type that code on the Apple Wireless Keyboard you are setting up and press Return on that same keyboard.

Check which Apple keyboard you have
These passcode steps apply to earlier Apple wireless input devices. Apple distinguishes them from newer Magic Keyboard models, which can pair automatically when connected to a supported Mac using a cable.
- Earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard: no Lightning port; a blinking LED signals pairing readiness, and Bluetooth setup may ask for a passcode.
- Newer Magic Keyboard: may pair automatically through a supported cable connection. The older passcode flow may not apply.
If you are unsure which generation you have, check the keyboard’s ports and the pairing behavior before troubleshooting it as an older model.

If the keyboard does not appear in Bluetooth
LED stays off
Apple says the batteries may need replacing if the LED does not turn on.
LED lights briefly but does not blink
The keyboard may already be connected to another nearby Mac. On that Mac, forget or remove the keyboard in Bluetooth settings. Then turn the keyboard off and back on.

Use the keyboard’s power button to restart it
Earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard models have a power button on the right side. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions say to hold the button until the green LED turns off, then press it again until the LED comes on.

Make sure Bluetooth is turned on. Earlier wireless input devices also require a mouse or trackpad already connected to the Mac to complete setup; on a Mac laptop, use its built-in trackpad.
