Choose by phone first: Apple Watch Series 12 is the straightforward choice for an iPhone owner. Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 work with Android phones, but Samsung says several ecosystem features require a Galaxy phone. If you use another Android brand, check that the features you care about work with your exact phone before buying.
Which watch works with your phone?
Phone compatibility is the first filter, not a minor feature comparison. Apple Watch is designed for iPhone users. Samsung says Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 are compatible with Android phones, while noting that some ecosystem features specifically require a Samsung Galaxy phone. See Samsung’s August 31, 2026 announcement for that distinction.

- You have an iPhone: Start with Apple Watch Series 12. The supplied manufacturer materials do not establish Galaxy Watch compatibility with iPhone.
- You have a Samsung Galaxy phone: Galaxy Watch is a natural match if its features and fit suit you.
- You have another Android phone: Samsung watches are compatible, but confirm the requirements for each desired feature. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch comparison page notes that some features are unavailable with non-Samsung Android devices.
Compatibility can depend on the phone model, operating-system version, region, app, and feature. Check the requirements for your exact combination rather than relying on a general “works with Android” label.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung Galaxy Watch9
Samsung positions Galaxy Watch9 for everyday wellness, cardiovascular insights, sleep, exercise, and recovery. That is the manufacturer’s description of its intended use, not an independent finding that it tracks any activity more accurately than Apple Watch.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2
Samsung positions Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for workout tracking and structured training in demanding environments. Consider it when those use cases matter more than a general everyday-wellness focus; the available manufacturer descriptions do not establish a tested performance advantage over Series 12.
How should you compare health and fitness features?
Start with the particular feature you expect to use—such as sleep tracking, workout detection, ECG, or irregular-heart-rhythm notifications—instead of comparing sensor counts. Samsung lists functions including heart monitoring, sleep coaching, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, automatic workout detection, body composition, and cycle tracking, but availability depends on model, phone, app, and feature conditions. Apple also says Series 12 feature availability can depend on region, language, age, and companion-device requirements.
These are not all equivalent features, nor does a feature listing establish clinical accuracy. Samsung describes its ECG app as “for informational use only in adults 22 years and older.” Its ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm tools may not alert on every episode and are not substitutes for diagnosis or treatment. Check Samsung’s feature comparison and conditions before relying on a specific function.
Rank #3
Samsung says its sleep-apnea monitoring is an over-the-counter, software-only feature for specified adults and compatible devices. It is not intended for people already diagnosed with sleep apnea and must not replace traditional diagnosis or treatment by a qualified clinician. Apple’s announcement likewise describes availability limits and exclusions for ECG and sleep-apnea notifications. Neither brand’s feature should be treated as a diagnosis; verify local availability and eligibility before purchase.
Which is better for workouts and everyday use?
For an iPhone owner who wants notifications and wellness tracking alongside fitness features, Series 12 is the natural Apple option. For an Android owner choosing Samsung, Galaxy Watch9 is the model Samsung frames around everyday wellness and activity. For a buyer prioritizing structured training or a more demanding environment, Samsung frames Ultra2 for that role. These distinctions reflect manufacturer positioning, not an independent head-to-head workout test.
Rank #4
The available sources do not establish a comparative battery-life winner, sensor-accuracy ranking, or owner-satisfaction result. If those are decisive, seek evidence for the exact models and conditions you care about rather than inferring a winner from feature lists.
