Those are cutoffs, not recommended arrival times. Check the current instructions for your departure port and sailing for the check-in opening time and location, then arrive with enough time to reach the right check-in point.
How early should you arrive?
Use the opening time shown for your port and sailing as your planning reference; do not aim to arrive at the last-check-in deadline. The Steam Packet Company does not publish one additional arrival buffer that applies to every port, terminal and sailing. Opening times differ, and schedules can change.

These are the opening times published on the Steam Packet Company port pages accessed on 7 October 2026. They are not interchangeable: some are approximate or minimum opening times, while Liverpool and Heysham list times for particular sailings.

Where to check in with a car, bike or on foot
Car and other vehicle passengers
Use the vehicle check-in booths and have your booking details ready. At Douglas, the booths are outside the terminal, at the entrance to the secure area. For other ports, follow the location instructions on that port’s page. Check-in must be completed by the vehicle cutoff.
Bicycle passengers
Book as a foot passenger and add the bicycle on the Extras page for both journey legs. Despite the foot-passenger booking method, bicycle passengers must check in at vehicle check-in with their QR code or booking reference. Dismount to embark and disembark. The company’s vehicle guidance FAQ has further instructions.

Foot passengers
Check in at the Passenger Terminal. If you are travelling with hand luggage only, the company says you can proceed directly to security with your QR code or booking reference. Allow time to get to the terminal and complete the required checks before the 25-minute cutoff.
Why you should not plan around the cutoff
The Steam Packet Company’s Terms and Conditions 09/24, marked correct as of October 2024, say minimum check-in times may vary and services may depart up to 15 minutes before scheduled departure. Treat the cutoff as a deadline, not an arrival target; check your booking and the current port page for sailing-specific instructions. Before you leave for the port
- Open the Steam Packet Company page for your actual departure port and check the opening time listed for your sailing.
- Check your booking for any sailing-specific information, terminal details or changes.
- Go to the correct check-in point: vehicle booths for cars and bicycles, or the Passenger Terminal for foot passengers.
- Plan to arrive before the published last-check-in cutoff, with time to reach the terminal or booth and complete check-in.
- For Dublin, verify that the sailing is operating on your travel date. The port page accessed on 7 October 2026 reported cancellations for scheduled sailings between 23 July and 1 October 2026 due to berth availability and wider network disruption; that notice is date-bound and does not establish the status of later sailings.
