Simon argues that this makes the screen look more enclosed by bezel. The measurements are small; whether the result looks worse is a matter of design judgment.
Why do the Apple Watch Series 12 bezels look bigger?
In his September 10, 2026 analysis for Macworld, executive editor Michael Simon compares the Series 12’s listed case dimensions with those of Series 10 and Series 11. Macworld reports that each Series 12 size is 1 mm wider in one case dimension, while the listed display resolution is unchanged. Simon’s interpretation is that the extra case width makes the display look more surrounded by bezel in product images, and therefore smaller.

That is a visual comparison, not evidence that Apple increased bezel width by a particular measured amount. The cited article does not provide an official Apple specification page or a bezel measurement. Simon acknowledges that the dimensional difference is small on paper, but writes: “That’s not a huge difference on paper, of course, but it feels like a step backwards.” That is his aesthetic verdict, not a finding about what owners generally think.

The following figures are those Macworld lists in its comparison. They distinguish case dimensions from display resolution; the resolution shown is the Series 12 figure reported by the article, not a claim that every display dimension is identical.

| Size option | Series 10/11 case (mm) | Series 12 case (mm) | Series 12 display resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller | 42 × 36 × 9.7 | 42 × 37 × 9.7 | 374 × 446 pixels |
| Larger | 46 × 39 × 9.7 | 46 × 40 × 9.7 | 374 × 446 pixels |
Macworld’s reported figures show the change in the middle case dimension: 36 to 37 mm for the smaller option and 39 to 40 mm for the larger. The other listed dimensions and the listed depth remain the same in this comparison. These are media-reported measurements, not independently verified Apple specifications.
Is the Series 12 thicker or did Apple make its screen smaller?
In Macworld’s listed comparison, the Series 12 is not thicker: all three case dimensions include a 9.7 mm depth. Its listed display resolution is 374 × 446 pixels for both Series 12 sizes. Those facts do not establish the physical screen area or prove that the display became smaller. Simon’s point is that the case-to-display proportions look less favorable, not that the resolution fell.

Why does Series 10 matter to the design argument?
Macworld’s Series 10 review described that model as thinner and flatter than earlier versions, while calling the redesign noticeable but not radical. Simon contrasts that emphasis—with a slimmer body and larger display—with the Series 12 dimensions in his later analysis. The comparison helps explain why a 1 mm change can feel symbolically significant to a design-focused observer, even if it does not establish a major practical difference.

The same review characterized Apple Watch releases as a run of modest changes. That is the reviewer’s assessment of the product cadence, not proof that the design stopped evolving or that users are broadly dissatisfied.

What changed on Series 12 besides its proportions?
Macworld’s September 2026 report also describes refreshed finishes and ceramic chassis options, Ceramic Shield 2 on aluminum models, heart-rate sensing, and software changes. These reported updates do not settle the case-and-display proportions debate, but they mean the critique is not that Apple changed nothing. The feature descriptions here are attributed to Macworld’s reporting; they were not checked against an Apple product specification page.
Should you upgrade from Series 10 or 11?
The proportions argument alone is not enough to decide. If you already own a Series 10 or 11, consider whether the Series 12 changes that matter to you outweigh a design that Simon finds less appealing. If appearance is your main concern, compare the actual sizes and finishes in person if possible: the published 1 mm difference does not predict how the watch will look on your wrist. This is a design analysis, not a buying recommendation, and it does not establish a performance or comfort advantage for either generation.
