Apple Watch Series 12 Audio Intelligence is a set of four features—not a single always-on conversation recorder. It can alert you to selected sounds, identify nearby music, show a text snippet from the previous 15 seconds when you activate Live Rewind, and create brief conversation summaries with Siri Recap. Apple says the conversation features process raw audio in a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave and immediately delete it; saved text outputs are end-to-end encrypted. Those privacy details are Apple’s design claims, not independent audit findings.
What Audio Intelligence does
Apple describes four distinct functions. They have different triggers and produce different results:

Apple presents Sound Recognition as useful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and says it can alert you without your iPhone nearby. Music Recognition is for identifying a song, not summarizing speech. Live Rewind is a short, on-demand recall tool; Siri Recap produces a brief, high-level summary rather than a transcript. Apple describes Siri Recap as designed to exclude sensitive information such as financial details and government-assigned identifiers.
How the conversation features handle audio
Apple says Audio Intelligence uses the watch microphone and Apple silicon alongside a combination of on-device and cloud-based AI models. Its Series 12 announcement references the S11 chip, the latest Apple Intelligence models on iPhone, and Private Cloud Compute. That does not mean every feature uses the same processing path, or that all inference happens locally. Apple also says server-model features, including Live Rewind and Siri Recap, have daily usage limits.

Apple’s stated audio and storage design
Apple says Series 12’s S11 chip includes Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio separately from the rest of the system and immediately deletes it. Apple says the features do not create or store audio recordings; raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, the user, and Apple, and the system does not identify or attribute speakers.
For the conversation features, Apple says the saved text snippets and summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app and sync through iCloud. Apple says even it cannot access that saved text. These are statements about Apple’s design; the cited launch and support materials do not provide an independent privacy audit or measured performance results.

Activation and notice are not identical
Apple says all four features are opt-in. Live Rewind is explicitly user-activated: when it starts, the watch plays an audible chime even if silent mode is on, and shows an animation and microphone indicator. Apple says users choose when and where Live Rewind and Siri Recap are active, and Siri Recap can be toggled in Control Center. Apple’s described chime and visual indicator apply to Live Rewind; its materials do not establish that Siri Recap uses the same notice mechanism.

- Watch: Apple says the Audio Intelligence suite requires Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4.
- For Live Rewind and Siri Recap: You also need an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later; iPhone 16e is excluded.
- Language and region: Apple initially lists English availability and says the conversation features will not initially be available in the EU. Availability may vary by region and language.
- Usage: Apple says server-based features are subject to daily limits.
Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement said Live Rewind and Siri Recap would arrive in beta later in 2026. As of the official material checked on October 7, 2026, a beta rollout was not established. Feature availability can change, so check Apple’s current support information before relying on a specific release or regional availability.

How to enable Sound Recognition
Apple’s stated setup route is on the paired iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Sound Recognition.
- Enable Sound Recognition and choose the sounds you want detected, including the option to detect using Apple Watch.
Exact available controls can vary with software version and region. Apple’s cited instructions identify the iPhone Settings path; they do not provide a separate, fully specified setup path here for the other three features.

What Apple’s description does—and does not—establish
Apple’s materials explain intended behavior, prerequisites, and its privacy design claims, but do not report independent accuracy, latency, or user-satisfaction measurements for Audio Intelligence. They also do not establish that Siri Recap transcribes every conversation or provides the same activation cues as Live Rewind. Treat it as a user-selected summary feature, not a complete transcript or a substitute for a recording you deliberately make.
