Apple Vision Pro Can Scroll With Your Eyes—How Look to Scroll Works

Vision Pro’s Look to Scroll feature enables hands-free scrolling in supported pages, documents and lists on visionOS 26 or later—but it does not work everywhere.

Yes—but only with an important qualification. Apple Vision Pro can automatically scroll supported web pages, documents, lists and other views using eye movement when it runs visionOS 26 or later. This feature, called Look to Scroll, is different from the headset’s original gaze-based pointer and hand-flick scrolling, and it does not work universally in every app.

In brief: Look to Scroll is a software feature introduced in visionOS 26. Open supported content, look toward the scrollable view, and the page can move without a hand gesture. App support varies, scrolling speed can be adjusted, and hand, voice and connected-peripheral controls remain available.

What “scroll with your eyes” actually means

Vision Pro has always tracked where you are looking. Apple uses that gaze to place the system pointer on an app, button or text field; you normally pinch your fingers to select the targeted item. Before visionOS 26, scrolling generally involved looking toward the content and making a gentle hand or finger flick, as Apple describes on its Vision Pro product page.

Look to Scroll adds a separate, automatic behavior. In supported content, your eye movement can advance the page or list without that repeated hand gesture. Looking at a page is therefore not automatically the same as scrolling it: the view must support the feature and Vision Pro must recognize the intended scroll target.

Version requirement and rollout

The hands-free feature requires visionOS 26 or later. Apple announced it as part of the visionOS 26 update in June 2025, and its developer session explains how apps can adopt it: Apple Newsroom announcement and WWDC25 developer session.

Owners on an earlier release will still have gaze targeting, pinch selection and conventional gesture scrolling, but they should not expect automatic eye scrolling. Apple’s interface labels can change between software builds, so check the controls shown on the installed release rather than relying on screenshots from an older version.

Where Look to Scroll works

Apple identifies these categories as supported:

  • Safari web pages
  • Documents
  • Lists
  • Other supported scrollable views
  • visionOS apps whose developers integrate Look to Scroll

That qualification matters. A third-party app, game, embedded web view or iPad-compatible app may provide ordinary scrolling without implementing the hands-free behavior. Apple’s developer documentation describes integration rather than a guarantee that every application will respond to your eyes.

How to use it in practice

  1. Update Vision Pro: Install visionOS 26 or a later release.
  2. Open supported content: Try a Safari page, document or list with enough content to scroll.
  3. Target the view: Look toward the page or list you want to move. If several windows overlap, make sure the intended window is active.
  4. Use the eye-scrolling interaction: In a supported view, Vision Pro interprets the eye-based motion as a scroll command and advances the content.
  5. Adjust the feel: Apple’s Pointer Control settings include a scrolling-speed adjustment. The documented path is Settings > Accessibility > Interaction > Pointer Control: Apple Vision Pro User Guide.

The exact on-screen prompt or activation wording may vary by build. If a view does not respond, use a hand flick or another input method rather than assuming the headset or your eyes are faulty.

How it differs from the original Vision Pro controls

Interaction What it does Hand-free?
Gaze targeting Moves the pointer to the item you are looking at. Yes, for aiming only.
Gaze selection Looks at an item, then uses a finger pinch to activate it. No.
Traditional scrolling Looks toward content and uses a gentle hand or finger flick. No.
Look to Scroll Automatically scrolls supported pages, documents, lists and views using eye movement. Yes, where supported in visionOS 26 or later.

Vision Pro launched in the United States on February 2, 2024 with gaze targeting, pinch selection and hand-gesture scrolling. Look to Scroll is primarily a software expansion of that interaction model, not a new eye-tracking sensor: Apple’s launch announcement.

Why it may fail or feel inconsistent

  • Older software: The headset is not running visionOS 26 or later.
  • Unsupported view: The app or particular screen has not adopted Look to Scroll.
  • Wrong target: You are looking at a control, another window or a non-scrollable area rather than the active page.
  • Calibration or fit: Eye and hand setup may need to be completed again, especially after changing fit or handing the headset to another person.
  • Uncomfortable speed: Reduce or increase the Pointer Control scrolling-speed setting.
  • Alternate pointer mode: Accessibility settings may be using a head, wrist or finger pointer instead of the behavior you expected.

Apple’s Guest User guidance shows why setup matters: guests complete eye and hand setup for accurate navigation (Apple Support). Fit, prescription correction and individual eye movement can also affect tracking; the available documentation does not establish one universal cause for every failure.

Controls you can use instead

Eye scrolling is one input option, not the only way to operate Vision Pro. Depending on the task and app, you can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pinch to select and flick a hand or finger to scroll.
  • Use the Digital Crown for supported list and page interactions; Apple documents its interaction model in the Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or trackpad for precise navigation and text entry.
  • Use voice input or Siri where commands are supported.
  • Turn on accessibility tools such as VoiceOver, Switch Control, Dwell Control or Head Pointer.

Apple lists these and other alternatives in its visionOS interaction and accessibility guidance. They can be more predictable when eye movement is tiring, tracking is unreliable or an app lacks Look to Scroll support.

Accessibility and privacy considerations

Hands-free scrolling may reduce repeated gestures or help someone who cannot comfortably perform them, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed medical or accessibility solution. Successful use depends on setup, fit, the user’s vision and the app’s implementation. It also does not make every Vision Pro task eye-only: typing, confirmation and many navigation actions can still require a pinch, voice, keyboard, trackpad or another accessibility control.

Apple says eye input is processed so that eye movements are not shared with Apple, third-party apps or websites; when you pinch, only the resulting selection is transmitted. That is Apple’s stated platform behavior, not an independent audit. See Apple’s Vision Pro Privacy Overview.

Is eye scrolling worth buying Vision Pro for?

Look to Scroll is a meaningful convenience and a good demonstration of why Vision Pro’s eye tracking matters beyond selecting windows. It can make long reading sessions or hands-occupied situations easier, provided the content supports it.

It is not, by itself, a sensible reason to spend $3,499 in the United States on the current M5 Vision Pro. Apple lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations; its M5 announcement also lists ZEISS Readers at $99 and prescription inserts at $149 in the U.S.: Apple Newsroom. Apple says Vision Pro is designed for use without glasses, while users who need correction may require ZEISS Optical Inserts (Apple purchase page).

The headset’s value depends on the complete package—high-resolution displays, spatial video, Mac Virtual Display, immersive content, comfort and app support. If your actual need is ordinary web reading and precise scrolling, a MacBook, tablet or conventional monitor with a keyboard and trackpad is far less expensive. If you are considering Vision Pro, Apple offers in-store demonstrations through its purchase and demo page; testing fit and tracking is more informative than judging this feature from a specification sheet.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Vision Pro really can scroll with your eyes, but the claim applies to Look to Scroll on visionOS 26 or later and supported content—not every app or every action. Keep hand gestures and other controls available, and treat the feature as a useful convenience rather than a stand-alone reason to buy a $3,499 headset.
