Yes, the black-screen problem was real—but it was a limited failure during Google’s September 2024 Wear OS 5 rollout, not proof that every Pixel Watch was permanently bricked. Google paused the update for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on September 26, 2024, then resumed distribution in November with a new build. If your watch is still blank, follow Google’s restart and recovery sequence before assuming it needs replacement.

What happened during the Wear OS 5 rollout?

Google began distributing Wear OS 5 to eligible original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 devices in September 2024. The rollout announcement covered watches running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.0: Google’s September 2024 update notice.

After installing the over-the-air update, some owners reported watches that would not boot, could not pair, or showed a blank display, sometimes with a Bluetooth-related icon. Google acknowledged that some Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2 users were stuck on a blank screen and paused the rollout on September 26, 2024: Google’s rollout-pause notice.

Google did not publish an incidence rate, a complete technical root-cause analysis, or evidence that every report represented the same fault. The public description was “stuck on a blank screen,” not a declaration that all affected hardware had suffered irreversible damage.

Timeline: pause, investigation and resumed update

Date What happened
September 24, 2024 Google announced Wear OS 5 for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2.
September 26, 2024 Google paused the rollout after blank-screen reports.
October 11, 2024 Google reiterated that it was investigating and working on a resolution.
November 12, 2024 Google announced a phased restart. The global software version was AW2A.241105.012; a France-specific Orange LTE build was AW2A.241105.013: November 2024 update notice.

The November distribution arrived in phases over roughly a week, depending on carrier and device. Google said it included Wear OS 5, feature additions, bug fixes, performance updates and selected Play Store updates. It did not publish a device-by-device recovery rate for watches that had already gone blank.

Which Pixel Watch models were part of the acknowledged incident?

Model Part of Google’s acknowledged September incident? Qualification
Original Pixel Watch Yes Some owners were affected; no public failure percentage was provided.
Pixel Watch 2 Yes Some owners were affected during the Wear OS 5 OTA rollout.
Pixel Watch 3 Not in that acknowledgement It received a November 2024 update with bug fixes. Separate forum complaints should not automatically be attributed to the September Wear OS 5 failure.
Later models Not part of this 2024 incident Identify the exact model and update before applying this diagnosis.

Reports on other models, including Pixel Watch 3, are anecdotal unless tied to a specific Google update notice. A black screen after a drop, liquid exposure, charging problem or ordinary freeze is a different diagnostic case.

Is the watch permanently bricked?

Some owners reasonably described an unresponsive watch as “bricked,” but that word implies permanent hardware failure that Google did not establish. A black display can result from a failed boot, frozen software, inadequate power, a display fault or another hardware problem.

Before blaming Wear OS 5, check the symptoms:

  • Does the watch vibrate when you press a button?
  • Does it show a charging animation or become visible in the Pixel Watch phone app?
  • Does the G logo appear after a long button hold?
  • Did the problem begin immediately after the September 2024 update?
  • Was the watch dropped, exposed to water or showing display artifacts beforehand?

These clues can indicate whether the watch is running with a display or boot-state problem rather than having a completely dead main board. They are troubleshooting inferences, not a Google diagnosis.

Recovery steps Google recommends

Use the procedures in this order. Google’s complete instructions are at Pixel Watch Help: blank, frozen or error message.

1. Try a normal restart

  1. Press and hold the crown for about 3 seconds.
  2. Scroll down.
  3. Tap Restart.

This is appropriate when the watch is frozen but can still display menus.

2. Force a restart

  1. Press and hold the crown and side button together.
  2. Continue for about 35 seconds, or longer if needed.
  3. Release when the G logo appears.
  4. Allow the watch to complete its restart.

This is a forced restart, not a factory reset, so it does not intentionally erase the watch.

3. Repeat the hard reset while charging

Connect the watch correctly to its model-appropriate official charger, then repeat the crown-and-side-button hold. A charging or alignment problem can make an otherwise recoverable watch appear dead. Pixel Watch generations do not all use identical charging arrangements; Android Authority’s troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the official charger: Pixel Watch 2 troubleshooting.

Google Pixel Watch 4 (45mm) - Smartwatch - Moonstone Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

4. Factory-reset a watch that still shows menus

On the watch, swipe down and open Settings, tap Disconnect & reset, then tap OK.

Alternatively, in the Google Pixel Watch app, open System and choose Reset and unpair watch. A factory reset erases apps, settings and data stored on the watch, so use it only after restart attempts and after considering any unsynced information.

5. Use recovery mode if ordinary reset fails

  1. Uninstall the Google Pixel Watch app from your phone.
  2. Use the watch’s side button to highlight Recovery Mode.
  3. Press the crown.
  4. When No Command appears, press and hold the crown while swiping up on the screen.
  5. On the debug screen, select Wipe Data or Factory Reset.
  6. Swipe right to reset.
  7. After the wipe, select Reboot system now.

This procedure is impractical if the display is completely dead. Do not improvise with pins, paper clips or other tools. Google warns against inserting objects into the microphone hole or charging-pin area, particularly on Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3, because that can cause damage.

  • It will not charge, becomes unusually hot or repeatedly reboots.
  • A factory reset or recovery-mode wipe fails.
  • The watch has physical damage or liquid exposure.
  • The device is still within its warranty or protection-plan coverage.

Google’s support page directs owners to contact support when its listed reset steps do not work. Replacement eligibility depends on country, purchase date, warranty status and the support diagnosis; Google has not promised a free replacement for every black-screen report.

How to interpret a black screen today

Likely related to the 2024 incident

The strongest match is an original Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2 that went blank immediately after attempting the September 2024 Wear OS 5 OTA, especially if it became unresponsive or failed to pair at the same time.

More likely a separate fault

  • A screen that went black after a fall or liquid exposure.
  • A watch that is merely dim, in bedtime mode, theater mode or otherwise displaying settings-related behavior.
  • A device that stopped working after powering off or charging with no connection to the 2024 update.
  • A Pixel Watch 3 complaint not tied to a specific Google update notice.

The November 2024 restart means Wear OS 5 was not abandoned. However, the public notices do not prove that the replacement build recovered every previously affected watch, so persistent failures still require individual support diagnosis.

Preferred Care

Google’s U.S. Preferred Care page lists Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 coverage at $4 per month or $89 for two years, with a listed $49 service fee for covered watch service events. Availability, enrollment rules, waiting periods and coverage vary by country and plan terms: Google Preferred Care. A plan is not retroactive for a device already damaged or already failing unless its enrollment and claim rules are satisfied.

Charger or replacement watch

Consider a model-specific official charger only when the watch has no physical damage and the symptoms could be power-related. A charger cannot repair a failed display or corrupted boot state. Buy through the Google Store or support channel rather than using an unverified generic accessory.

Buying another watch should be the last step: confirm the model, try Google’s restart and hard-reset procedures, check warranty or protection eligibility, and obtain a support diagnosis. The public record does not show that every black-screen report required a replacement device.

What the incident tells Pixel Watch owners

The September 2024 failure was a genuine, officially acknowledged rollout problem affecting some original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 units. Google paused distribution, later resumed it with a new build, and did not publish a failure rate or claim that every affected watch was permanently destroyed. In 2026, treat this as a dated incident rather than evidence of a new widespread Wear OS 5 outage; diagnose the individual watch, protect its data by delaying a factory reset when possible, and move to Google support when the documented recovery steps fail.
