Apple Upgrade vs. Verizon: Which iPhone Deal Costs Less Over Time?

Apple Upgrade is a lease; Verizon credits depend on offer terms and ongoing eligibility. Compare service costs, verified credits, and the phone’s end-of-term outcome to find your lower total.

Neither Apple Upgrade nor a Verizon promotion is automatically the cheapest way to get an iPhone. Apple Upgrade is a lease with a return-or-buy choice; Verizon’s advertised device credits are paid over time and can depend on keeping an eligible plan and service line. To see which saves you the most money on an iPhone, compare the same model, storage, time period, service costs, verified credits, and what happens to the phone at the end. This comparison covers U.S. offers checked October 7, 2026.

What you are comparing

Apple Upgrade is a lease

Apple says its U.S. iPhone leases are provided by Klarna and are available on 12- or 24-month terms, subject to credit approval and eligibility. You generally return the phone at the end of the lease; you do not own it unless you pay the purchase fee. An eligible carrier is required, and prepaid plans are excluded. Early termination or a phone that does not meet return conditions can add costs. Apple’s U.S. Apple Upgrade announcement and terms explain the lease arrangement.

Verizon offers device financing and promotional credits

Verizon’s device payments and promotions work differently: the phone is financed, while qualifying promotional credits are applied to monthly bills across the promotion or device-payment term. Verizon says credits may stop if you pay off the phone early, upgrade early, cancel the line, or move to an ineligible plan. Some existing-customer trade-ins also require the traded phone to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. Read the terms for the specific offer in Verizon’s mobile device deals and promotions FAQs.

Current iPhone 18 Pro examples

Apple’s September 2026 example prices an iPhone 18 Pro with 256GB storage at $1,199 before taxes and trade-in credit. Apple lists typical lease payments of $34.99 per month for 24 months or $49.99 per month for 12 months, also before taxes and trade-in credit. These are example payments, not guaranteed quotes; eligibility and approval apply.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

Apple also advertises up to $1,200 in carrier credits toward an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max after trading in an iPhone 14 or newer in any condition. That is a maximum subject to carrier terms, not a guaranteed discount or a cash payment. Check the offer and eligibility with the carrier. See Apple’s September 2026 launch announcement.

Verizon’s catalog lists the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199.99 retail or $33.33 per month for 36 months at 0% APR. It also displays a no-trade-in offer for customers switching to Verizon with its Simplicity Plan. The listed phone price does not include service, and the offer headline alone does not establish what a particular customer will pay. Verify the precise promotion and required plan in your account and checkout flow on Verizon’s Apple smartphone page.

Option Published iPhone 18 Pro 256GB example End-of-term outcome
Apple Upgrade $34.99 per month for 24 months or $49.99 per month for 12 months; Apple’s example purchase price is $1,199. Taxes and trade-in credit excluded. Return the phone, or pay the purchase fee to own it.
Verizon device payments $33.33 per month for 36 months at 0% APR; $1,199.99 retail. Include any remaining device balance if your comparison period ends before the agreement does.

Apple’s lease examples and purchase price are from its September 2026 announcement; Verizon’s device price is from its current catalog. The monthly figures are not directly comparable on their own: the terms differ, and one is a lease while the other is device financing. Neither figure includes the full cost of wireless service.

How to calculate which deal costs less

Choose one comparison period—such as 24 or 36 months—and use the same iPhone model and storage for both options. Calculate the total outlay over that period:

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

Total cost = device payments + required wireless-plan charges + unavoidable fees and taxes − credits you actually qualify for.

  1. Use your real plan cost. Add the wireless charges required for each offer over the same number of months. A lower device payment can be outweighed by a more expensive required plan.
  2. Count only credits you can verify. Confirm your trade-in model and condition, account status, plan, and promotion eligibility. Do not subtract an advertised maximum unless the checkout quote shows that you qualify for it.
  3. Match the credit schedule to the time window. Verizon credits arrive over time, so include only credits received within your comparison period. If you end the comparison before the financing or promotion term, account for the remaining device balance and any credits lost under the offer’s rules.
  4. Include the phone’s end value or return choice. With Apple Upgrade, compare returning the phone with paying the purchase fee if you want to keep it. With Verizon, account for the remaining balance if you have not completed the device payments.
  5. Add applicable fees and taxes. Use the amounts shown in your actual offer and checkout rather than assuming they are identical across options.

For a useful personalized calculation, gather your current carrier and plan, whether you are switching or upgrading, the exact iPhone model and storage, trade-in model and condition, any balance on your existing phone, offer eligibility, and whether you want to keep or return the new phone. Plan prices and account-specific offers can change the result; compare actual quotes rather than treating a headline credit as your savings.

Which option may fit your situation?

Consider Apple Upgrade if you value a lease and a return path

The lease can suit someone who expects to return the phone at the end of the term and wants a defined monthly lease payment. Compare the lease total with your service costs and check what buying the phone at the end would add. It is not equivalent to financing a phone you automatically own.

Consider a Verizon deal if you meet its conditions and can stay through the credit term

A Verizon promotion may reduce your effective device cost if you qualify for the offer and keep the required service and plan for the necessary period. The key trade-off is that the advertised credits are conditional and may stop after certain account or device changes. Ask for the full credit schedule and offer requirements, not just the monthly phone price.

Check the exact model and offer before deciding

Deal ceilings vary by model and carrier. Apple’s iPhone 17 shopping page, for example, displayed maximum credits of $900 for AT&T, $1,000 for T-Mobile, and $840 for Verizon alongside a $929 device-only price for the 256GB model. Those figures describe that iPhone 17 page, not the iPhone 18 Pro offer. They illustrate why you should compare the exact model and channel rather than carry a credit amount from one product page to another. Apple’s iPhone 17 shopping page shows those model-specific figures.

Also distinguish Apple Upgrade from the older U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple says it is ending that legacy program; current members can continue their existing payments through the 24-month term. When eligible for another phone, Apple lists Apple Upgrade, carrier financing, Apple Card Monthly Installments, and outright purchase as possible paths. These programs have different terms. See Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program page.

Verizon’s early-upgrade terms dated September 24, 2026 describe a route for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max that requires the existing device to be under a 36-month agreement, returned in good working condition, and replaced under a new 36-month agreement. That is a separate set of conditions from simply receiving a promotional credit; review Verizon’s early upgrade program terms if you are considering that route.
