Neither Apple TV+ nor free streaming services are a universal winner for British TV. Apple TV+ is focused on Apple Originals, while services such as Tubi and Pluto TV have separate, changing lineups that may include British programmes. The best fit depends on where you live, which shows you want, and whether you are comfortable with ads.
First, what does “Apple TV” mean?
Apple TV+ is Apple’s paid streaming subscription, built around Apple Originals. The Apple TV app is a separate viewing and discovery interface: it can bring together supported services and let users buy or rent content. A programme shown in the app is not necessarily included with an Apple TV+ subscription.

What each service can offer for British TV
Apple TV+: Apple Originals, not a broad British-TV catalogue
Apple describes Apple TV+ as an all-original service. It may suit viewers who want its originals, but the available evidence does not establish it as a replacement for a service with a broad selection of older and current British broadcast television. Check a particular title’s listing rather than assuming it is included in the subscription.

Tubi: a British TV category with changing titles
Tubi’s “British TV” category includes titles such as Long Lost Family (UK). That confirms that Tubi carries some British television; it does not establish a complete catalogue or a consistently larger selection than another service. Listings can change.

Pluto TV: free viewing and live-style discovery
Pluto TV describes its UK service as free and offers viewing through its apps or website. Its positioning includes live TV as well as shows and movies, which may appeal if you like a scheduled-channel experience. The available information does not provide a stable count of British shows or a comparison of British-TV hours with on-demand services.
Availability depends on your country
Streaming rights and supported apps differ by market. Apple’s country-by-country provider list names BBC iPlayer, BritBox, Channel 4, ITVX, Pluto TV and UKTV Play for the UK. This indicates provider support in the Apple TV app in that market; it does not mean those services’ programmes are included in Apple TV+, nor that the same providers or catalogues are available in the US or elsewhere.

Before choosing, check that the service is available where you live and search for the specific programme in that service’s local listings. A category page or app-provider list is not a promise that a particular title will remain available.

How to choose for the shows you want
- Start with specific programmes and genres. Search each service in your country for the shows you actually want. Catalogues change, so treat listings as a snapshot rather than a guarantee.
- Decide whether free viewing with ads suits you. Pluto TV describes its UK service as free. Apple TV+ is a paid subscription, although access may sometimes be offered for a limited time or bundled under particular terms. Confirm current conditions directly before signing up.
- Choose between originals and a licensed catalogue. Apple TV+ centres on Apple Originals. Tubi’s British-TV category is evidence of a separate set of licensed titles, but there is no supported total-title comparison across the services.
- Consider how you like to watch. Pluto TV’s mix includes live TV as well as shows and movies; that may be preferable to browsing only on-demand listings. It does not, by itself, establish that Pluto has more British programmes.
Is BritBox a better fit?
If British television is your main reason for subscribing, BritBox is a more directly relevant paid option to investigate. A 2024 FCC report described BritBox as offering British television from the BBC and ITV. The report’s prices are historical, not current pricing; check BritBox’s present catalogue, plans, availability and price directly for your country.

The available evidence confirms that Tubi has a British-TV category, Pluto TV positions its UK service as free, Apple TV+ focuses on originals, and supported providers vary by country. It does not establish a complete current inventory or a defensible ranking of total British-TV catalogue size. A reliable choice therefore comes from checking the programmes you want in your region, not from assuming one service has the most.
