If your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote is not responding, first pair it again: point it at Apple TV from about three inches away, then hold Back (or Menu) and Volume Up for five seconds. If that does not fix it, restart the remote, check signal and charge, then update Apple TV. Volume-only problems need a separate setting check.

If Apple TV asks you to, place the remote on top of Apple TV to complete pairing.

If pairing still fails, unplug Apple TV from power, wait six seconds, reconnect it, and try the pairing steps again.

2. Restart the remote
Hold the TV/Control Center button and Volume Down together for about five seconds, or until Apple TV’s status light turns off and on. Release both buttons and wait five to ten seconds, then press any button on the remote. If Apple TV does not show a Remote Connected notification, repeat the pairing steps above.

3. Check the Bluetooth signal if the remote connects but responds unreliably
On Apple TV running tvOS 18.0 or later, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote and check the Bluetooth RSSI indicator. This indicator is version-specific and may not appear on older tvOS versions.

If the signal is weak—or there is no indicator—move within 20 feet (about six meters) of Apple TV and clear objects blocking the path between the remote and the front of Apple TV, the television, receiver, or sound bar. Apple’s guidance is available in its remote troubleshooting article.
4. Charge the remote
Connect the remote to a USB wall charger for 30 minutes using the appropriate cable: USB-C-to-USB or Lightning-to-USB, depending on the connector on your remote. Check the port before choosing a cable. You can check battery level at Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote. Apple’s Apple TV 4K user guide says its remote has an internal rechargeable battery and takes about three hours to fully charge: Apple TV 4K remote charging instructions.

5. Update Apple TV without the physical remote
Apple recommends updating Apple TV to the latest version of tvOS. If the physical remote is unusable, use the Apple TV Remote in iPhone or iPad Control Center to navigate the device and check for updates. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions include this alternative.
6. If only the volume buttons fail
When other remote functions work but volume does not, restart the remote first. Then open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control and try another setting—for example, select TV via IR instead of Auto. Some audio setups do not support volume adjustment through Apple TV’s remote, so you may need the television’s own remote. 7. When to contact Apple
If pairing, restarting, checking signal, charging, updating, and—where relevant—changing the volume-control setting do not restore operation, contact Apple Support for diagnosis rather than assuming a particular button, battery, or Bluetooth component has failed. Apple’s Apple TV support hub lists service options and a repair-start path.
These steps cover Siri Remote and Apple TV Remote models addressed by Apple’s instructions. Older white or aluminum Apple Remote models may require separate guidance.
