The most useful home-security plan is layered: make doors and windows harder to enter, use alarms and lighting to improve detection and visibility, and use cameras to alert you or preserve evidence. No camera, alarm or app can guarantee that someone will not break in. The guidance below is UK-based; check local laws, police advice and product standards if you live elsewhere.
Start with a layered plan, not a single gadget
Police.uk cautions that CCTV has limitations and is not a substitute for secure doors and windows. The College of Policing’s evidence summary, drawing on analysis of Crime Survey for England and Wales data attributed to Tseloni and colleagues (2017), identifies window locks, external lights and door locks among the stand-alone measures reported as offering the greatest benefit. Combinations included window locks with external lights or door locks, as well as the four-part WIDE combination: window locks, interior lights on a timer, double door locks or deadbolts, and exterior lights on a sensor. The summary does not provide a numerical effect size, and the underlying analyses did not separate factors such as alarm monitoring, installation quality, geography or whether an alarm was fitted after a burglary; treat this as support for layering, not a guarantee of cause or outcome. 11 practical tech-enabled security upgrades
1. Lock and maintain doors and windows
Close and lock doors and windows when you leave, at night and whenever they are not in use. Check that frames, hinges and locks are sound, and fix faults rather than relying on an app or smart lock to compensate for weak hardware. Choose smart locks for convenience only after checking compatibility with your door and the security requirements that apply where you live. Police Scotland’s break-in and housebreaking advice covers doors, windows and alarms.

2. Cover likely entry points with alarm sensors
Build alarm coverage around how someone could actually enter: door and window magnetic contacts can detect opening, while motion, glass-break or vibration sensors may cover other risks. Consider reachable upper-floor windows as well as ground-floor openings. Police.uk notes that intruders may use ladders to reach upper windows beyond lower-floor sensor coverage. Police.uk’s home-security guidance and Police Scotland’s advice discuss alarm coverage.

3. Match the alarm response to your household
An audible-only alarm sounds locally; an app or dialler system can notify you or nominated contacts; a professionally monitored system routes alerts to a monitoring service under its agreed procedure. These are different response arrangements, not interchangeable promises of police attendance. In the UK, response can depend on monitoring and current system requirements. Compare sensor coverage, false-alarm handling, power and battery resilience, installation credentials and recurring fees before choosing. See West Yorkshire Police’s alarm and CCTV guidance and Police.uk.
4. Put a camera or video doorbell on a useful approach
Cover a front or back door, driveway or other access route where a camera can capture a useful view. Prefer framing that could help identify a person over a very wide but indistinct image. Treat the device chiefly as an alert and evidence layer: Police.uk says CCTV does not prevent crime by itself and is no substitute for secure doors and windows. Police.uk and West Yorkshire Police provide camera guidance.

5. Check low-light performance and recording details
Before buying CCTV, compare image detail and light sensitivity, and check whether night vision and motion detection suit the location. Confirm how the specific device handles power, connectivity, storage, timestamps and any subscription terms; a camera that is offline, unpowered or not retaining footage may not serve its intended purpose. West Yorkshire Police identifies resolution and light sensitivity as image-quality factors. Its CCTV and alarms guidance also discusses night performance and detection.
6. Aim cameras at your property and check privacy rules
Where possible, frame cameras to cover your own entrances and access routes rather than neighbors’ homes or gardens, or public space. Discuss placement with neighbors when views might overlap. Police.uk notes that home CCTV is subject to legislation and points readers toward accredited-installation guidance; legal obligations vary by jurisdiction, so check current local rules rather than treating UK guidance as universal legal advice. See Police.uk, Police Scotland and West Yorkshire Police.

7. Light doors and approaches without causing glare
Use motion-sensor, dusk-to-dawn or timer-controlled exterior lighting where it suits the area you need to see. Keep plants from blocking the beam, position fixtures where they are not easy to tamper with, and avoid glare or unnecessary spill onto neighbors’ property. Compare coverage, control type, weather suitability, power source and mounting position. Police.uk and Police Scotland recommend lighting as part of home security.
8. Schedule an indoor lamp while you are away
A plug-in timer or compatible smart plug can switch a lamp on and off at set times. Use a schedule that fits your home rather than assuming one fixed pattern will convincingly simulate occupancy. Police guidance supports preset switching as an absence measure; it cannot guarantee that a home will appear occupied. See Police.uk and Police Scotland.

9. Secure the perimeter and remove useful climbing aids
Keep sightlines near the front of the property, secure side and rear boundaries and gates, and trim vegetation that hides approaches. Move bins and ladders away from windows so they are less convenient to use for access. These physical measures help cameras and lights cover visible routes instead of concealed ones. Police.uk and Police Scotland include perimeter and visibility advice.

10. Verify callers before opening the door
A peephole, door chain or restrictor, or video doorbell can help you check who is outside without opening the door fully. If someone claims to represent a company or public body, verify their identity using a published company number rather than one they give you at the door. Police.uk’s home-security advice and Police Scotland’s guidance cover screening callers.

11. Make absences less obvious and property easier to identify
Before a trip, check that camera doorbells have power and enough storage, schedule indoor lighting, and pause deliveries or arrange for someone to collect them. Avoid announcing travel plans through public holiday posts. Keep serial numbers for valuables or use a property-marking kit; marking can help identify or recover property, but it does not stop someone entering. Police Scotland’s break-in and housebreaking guidance covers holiday preparation and property marking.

Compare the features that affect day-to-day usefulness, not just the headline claim or app. UK police guidance refers to accredited installers and relevant industry bodies such as NSI and SSAIB; check current credentials and requirements in your area.
| Device | What to compare | Practical trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm | Sensor types and coverage; audible, app/dialler or professionally monitored response; false-alarm handling; installer credentials | Installation and subscription charges, battery or power resilience, and who will respond to an alert |
| Camera or doorbell | Image detail and low-light performance; useful field of view; motion detection and notification delay; privacy controls and account security | Wired, battery or solar power; local or cloud storage; recurring fees and the risk of losing power, connectivity or recorded footage |
| Exterior lighting | Area covered; motion, dusk-to-dawn or timer control; weather suitability; mounting height and tamper resistance | Power source, glare, light spill onto neighbors and whether the fixture is easy to reach |
| Locks and accessories | Fit with the existing door or window; certification appropriate to your country and insurer; installation needs | Compatibility and whether a fitting affects safe exit or ventilation |
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The College of Policing summary supports combining practical measures, but it does not establish a universal percentage reduction in burglary or prove that a particular camera or alarm will deter an intruder. Nottinghamshire Police Crime Scene Investigator Luke Cano-Flatt describes the practical logic: “Burglars are likely to target premises with easy access inside and will take the least path of resistance to commit crime.” That is a reason to remove easy opportunities and improve detection, not a promise that any one upgrade will prevent a crime. Nottinghamshire Police burglary-prevention advice.
