On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Apps > TV. Streaming and downloads each have their own cellular switch and quality choice. Mac, Windows and Android use different menus and slightly different labels, so the steps below are split by platform.
Find the settings on your device
Apple says the options you see depend on your device, so your screen may not match every label here. Streaming and download choices are separate everywhere, so set both if you want to control data use.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Settings app, then go to Apps > TV.
- Under streaming, turn Use Cellular Data off to limit streaming to Wi-Fi.
- For Wi-Fi streaming, choose High Quality or Data Saver.
- If cellular streaming is on, choose High Quality or Automatic.
- Under downloads, you can turn cellular access off separately. Choose High Quality or Fast Downloads for cellular and Wi-Fi downloads.
Apple’s guide states: “High Quality requires a faster internet connection and uses more data.” High Quality downloads also use more data and take longer. Each extra audio language you download increases the file size. Source: Apple Support, Change the Apple TV app settings on iPhone and iPad.
Mac
In the Apple TV app, choose TV > Settings > Playback. High Quality (Up to 4K) streams the highest-quality video, including HDR when available. Data Saver streams the best available quality at the lowest file size. Download options are High Quality (up to 1080p), Fast Downloads, and Most Compatible HD (1080p). See Apple’s Mac guide.

Windows
In the Apple TV app, open the sidebar actions, choose Settings, then Playback. Streaming offers Data Saver and High Quality (Up to 4K). Downloads offer High Quality up to 1080p, Fast Downloads, and Most Compatible formats in HD or SD. See Apple’s Windows guide.
Android
Apple’s Android guide documents toggles for cellular streaming and cellular downloads. Streaming offers High Quality or Automatic on cellular, and High Quality or Data Saver on Wi-Fi. Apple says the automatic cellular setting optimizes quality based on your data plan. Fast Downloads give a smaller, lower-quality file that uses less storage. See Apple’s Android guide.

What each choice means

Apple does not publish a universal gigabytes-per-hour figure for each setting, and actual use varies by title and device, so treat any such number you see elsewhere as an estimate.
Choosing a trade-off
- Limited mobile plan: turn cellular streaming and downloads off, or use Automatic on cellular. Download over Wi-Fi ahead of time.
- Slow or shared Wi-Fi: choose Data Saver for streaming.
- Large screen and a fast connection: choose High Quality.
- Small storage: choose Fast Downloads and avoid downloading extra audio languages.
How much speed do you need?
Apple’s troubleshooting article says: “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple’s published guidance, not a guarantee that every stream will play in HD. If playback struggles, Apple suggests:

- trying Wi-Fi if mobile service is weak;
- restarting your device or streaming hardware;
- trying a download where available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Data Saver reduce video quality?
It lowers file size, so quality can be lower than High Quality. Apple’s Mac guide describes it as the best available quality at the lowest file size.
How do I stop the Apple TV app from using cellular data?
On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings > Apps > TV and turn off Use Cellular Data under streaming. Do the same under downloads to block cellular downloads.
