For better streaming, choose a higher-quality option when your connection and data allowance can support it; use a data-saving option when they cannot. For subtitles, set a preferred language, enable Closed Captions + SDH if you want them, and adjust the style for readability. The menu paths differ across iPhone and iPad, Android, Windows, Apple TV 4K, and smart TVs, so use the instructions for your device.
Choose streaming quality for your connection and data plan
Higher quality can use more data and require a faster connection. Data-saving modes prioritize lower data use or smaller files, which may mean lower video quality. Apple does not publish bitrate or data-per-hour figures for these choices, and the labels describe settings rather than guaranteeing a particular result for every title, connection, or screen.

iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > Apps > TV. Review the cellular-data permission and the available streaming-quality choices, such as High Quality or Data Saver on Wi-Fi. Options can vary by device. Apple says High Quality requires a faster internet connection and uses more data. Download quality and language choices can also affect download speed, file size, or storage. In the Apple TV app, open its settings to review cellular streaming, Wi-Fi quality, language preferences, downloads, subtitles, and autoplay. Apple documents High Quality or Automatic for cellular streaming and High Quality or Data Saver over Wi-Fi. The available controls can vary by device and region; consult Apple’s Android settings guide for the app’s current route.

Windows
Open the app’s sidebar actions, choose Settings, then Playback. Apple describes Data Saver as the best available quality at the lowest file size. High Quality is described as the highest-quality video, up to 4K with HDR when available. Those are setting descriptions, not a promise that a given title, connection, or display will reach those limits. Windows download choices include Fast Downloads, compatible SD/HD, and High Quality up to 1080p. Details are in Apple’s Windows Playback settings guide.
Set up subtitles and captions for easier viewing
Preferred language, captions, and appearance are separate concerns: a preference can make a track easier to select, Closed Captions + SDH can provide accessible captions where offered, and a style change can improve legibility. None makes a missing track appear. Apple notes that available languages and accessibility features vary by title, region, and device.

Apple TV 4K: control when subtitles appear automatically
Go to Settings > Video and Audio and review Automatic Subtitles. You can choose a subtitle language or Auto, and decide whether subtitles appear for a different spoken language, when the audio is muted, or after skipping back. Smart TVs and other supported devices: enable captions and adjust style
In the Apple TV app, open Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning from the sidebar, where that route is available. Turn on Closed Captions and SDH if wanted, then choose a style or customize its appearance. Feature availability depends on device and region. Choose a track while a movie is playing
Open the playback controls and select Subtitles to choose an available track or turn captions off. Use Style or Manage Styles if shown. Playback controls and labels vary across platforms. Apple also documents audio-track and language selection, plus audio descriptions on supported platforms; see Apple’s subtitle and audio controls guide.
If the language or caption track is missing
Check the movie or show’s detail page for its listed languages and accessibility features. Apple says these vary by title and region, so a preferred language setting cannot add a track the program does not offer. See Apple’s guide to changing subtitles or languages.

Adjust dialogue and loudness on Apple TV 4K
For compatible playback, Apple TV 4K offers Enhance Dialogue and Reduce Loud Sounds. Apple describes Enhance as making dialogue more prominent with minimal impact on the original mix; Enhance More can alter that mix. Choices depend on the program, connected speakers or headphones, and Apple TV model. Streaming quality controls affect playback; download choices affect the downloaded file’s size, storage use, or completion speed. If you watch offline, review download quality and language options on iPhone or iPad, Android, or Windows rather than assuming the streaming preference applies to downloads. Apple also documents next-episode and recommendation autoplay controls in the app’s Playback settings on iPhone and iPad, and autoplay options on Android. These controls change what plays next, not the current video’s quality or subtitle availability.
