It is separate from both the Apple TV subscription and the Apple TV 4K streaming box.
What is the Apple TV app?
It is Apple’s video viewing and discovery app. Apple describes it as a place to watch Apple Original series and films, browse recommendations, access a library of purchased items, and find other viewing options. What appears and which features work depend on the device and country or region.

The app can bring together several kinds of access: an Apple TV subscription, subscriptions to selected Apple TV channels, purchases or rentals from the Apple TV Store, and connections to other streaming apps. Seeing a title or service in the app does not mean it is included with an Apple TV subscription.
Apple’s Apple TV app overview says users can buy, rent, and watch in the app, as well as watch items previously purchased from iTunes. The Apple TV app is therefore both a place to play video and a way to discover or access content; it is not one all-inclusive streaming plan.

Apple TV app, Apple TV subscription, and Apple TV 4K: what’s the difference?

Apple Support explains that an Apple TV subscription does not cover third-party branded subscription services or content available for rental or purchase in the app. Those options may require a separate subscription or payment. Sports and other features also vary by region.
Is the Apple TV app free?
The app itself is software, but not everything available through it is free. Some viewing requires an Apple TV subscription; selected channels may require their own subscription; and store titles may be available for individual rental or purchase. The app can also connect with other streaming services, whose access may require separate subscriptions. Check the listing and terms for the specific title or service in your region rather than assuming it is included.

Do you need an Apple TV device to use the app?
No. Apple lists the app for Apple devices as well as Android, PC, supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, and AirPlay-enabled devices. Availability depends on the particular device and region. Apple TV 4K is an optional way to access the app, not a prerequisite.

On a compatible smart TV or streaming device, look for the app in that device’s app store, install it, and sign in with your Apple Account. Apple’s setup guide for smart TVs and streaming devices notes that some devices do not support purchases or subscriptions directly in the app. If the option is unavailable, complete the transaction on another supported device, then return to the TV to watch.

What can you do in the app?
- Watch Apple Originals: Apple series and films are available through Apple’s offering, subject to regional availability and the applicable subscription.
- Find sports: Sports access depends on what Apple offers in your country or region.
- Subscribe to selected channels: Channel subscriptions are distinct from third-party streaming services and may be available only on supported platforms or in certain regions.
- Rent or buy movies and shows: Store purchases and rentals are separate from the Apple TV subscription.
- Browse and resume viewing: The app can show recommendations and a library of purchased content. Apple Support says playback can continue across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, where supported.
Features and transactions are not identical everywhere. Apple Support warns that some devices do not support buying, renting, or subscribing to channels directly in the app. Its Apple TV app overview describes the distinction between Apple’s subscription, channels, store content, and other services.

If you already own a compatible TV, phone, computer, console, or streaming device, check whether the app is available for that exact model and in your region before buying additional hardware. When comparing devices, confirm both that the app can be installed and that it supports the transaction you need. A device can be suitable for watching while still requiring you to subscribe or purchase elsewhere.
