Apple TV 4K works with a TV or display that has HDMI, and you can set it up without an iPhone by choosing manual setup on screen. You’ll need an internet connection and an Apple Account; buying an Apple TV subscription is a separate choice, not a stated requirement for setting up the device.
Is Apple TV 4K compatible with your TV?
It can connect to a television or other display with an HDMI port. Apple says an HDMI cable is required. For 4K HDR, Apple specifies a compatible HDMI 2.0-or-later cable and a TV that supports 4K, HDR, or both, depending on the format you want to watch. Apple recommends HDMI 2.1 to access all Apple TV features. Apple’s setup instructions do not establish that you must replace a cable that already works with your equipment.

- HDMI display: Required to connect Apple TV 4K.
- 4K picture: Your TV must support 4K to display 4K content.
- HDR picture: Your TV must support HDR for HDR content.
- Cable: Apple requires an HDMI cable and specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR; HDMI 2.1 is its recommendation for access to all features.
Do you need an iPhone to set up Apple TV 4K?
No. Apple offers an onscreen manual setup path. Choose “Set Up Manually” on the Apple TV, connect it to your home network, and sign in with your Apple Account. The iPhone-assisted option is a convenience: it can transfer account and Wi-Fi settings. Apple’s setup guide describes both options.

- Connect Apple TV 4K to your display with an HDMI cable and power it on.
- When prompted, choose “Set Up Manually” rather than the iPhone-assisted option.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi, or use Ethernet if your model has an Ethernet port.
- Sign in with an Apple Account, or create one during setup if you do not already have one.
What internet, network, and account requirements apply?
Apple lists broadband internet and an Apple Account among the setup requirements. You can connect over Wi-Fi or, on a model with an Ethernet port, a wired network. Ethernet is not available on the Wi-Fi-only Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), according to the Apple TV User Guide. Check the exact model and configuration if you want a wired connection.

Is an Apple TV subscription required?
No subscription is stated as a prerequisite for completing device setup. Keep the names separate: Apple TV 4K is the streaming hardware, the Apple TV app is where you browse and watch content, and an Apple TV subscription is a separate service for Apple Originals. Apple’s setup page says users can browse and watch in the app and can also subscribe to Apple TV. In some countries or regions, users may be able to sign in with a TV or cable provider for programming included with that provider subscription.
