Prediction markets, polls, sportsbook odds, and futures prices can all offer clues about what may happen, but they measure different things. A poll records answers from a surveyed sample; a prediction-market price reflects trades in an event contract; sportsbook odds set the terms of a wager; and futures prices reflect contracts tied to an underlying asset or financial variable. None is a guaranteed forecast, and no method is best in every situation.
What each number actually tells you

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) defines event markets as derivatives markets whose payoff depends on a specified event. It describes event contracts as frequently structured as swaps; many use yes/no outcomes, but the contract terms govern. Its consumer guide to prediction markets and event contracts says prices reflect traders’ perceived probability of an event. That is a useful interpretation of the signal, not a promise about the outcome.

A poll and a market also differ in whose information they represent. Polls measure responses from people selected for a survey. A market price reflects the activity of people able and willing to trade that contract. Election models may combine polls with other inputs, so a model forecast is not simply another poll.

There is no general winner. Accuracy depends on the event, how far ahead the forecast is made, market liquidity, the polling or modeling inputs, and the method used to score forecasts. Results from particular U.S. presidential-election studies are informative examples, not a timeless ranking.

What a study of the 2020 election found
A 2021 preprint, “Models, Markets, and the Forecasting of Elections”, compared daily PredictIt prices with an Economist model for U.S. presidential battleground states over the seven months before the 2020 election. In that dataset, market prices performed better several months before the election, while the model performed better as Election Day approached. Averaging the market and model forecasts performed better overall in the study.
What a study of the 2024 election found
A 2025 preprint, “Are Betting Markets Better than Polling in Predicting Political Elections?”, reported that Polymarket performed better than traditional polling in its analysis of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, particularly in swing states. The authors called for further investigation and testing in other events. The result does not establish that prediction markets generally outperform polls.

These studies examined different elections, platforms, time periods, and evaluation choices. A responsible comparison should identify the event, forecasts being compared, observation dates, and scoring approach rather than claiming one method always wins.

How prediction markets differ from sportsbooks
Both involve financial positions connected to an outcome, but their numbers arise under different product rules. A prediction-market price comes from trading an event contract. Sportsbook odds are offered for a wager under an operator’s terms. Comparing them requires knowing the precise contract or wager, payout structure, and rules; an odds figure should not automatically be read as a market-implied probability.

Sportsbook rules and availability vary by operator and jurisdiction. There is no single set of odds mechanics or legal status that applies everywhere. For a specific wager, check the operator’s terms and the law where it is offered.

They overlap in financial structure: the CFTC describes event markets as derivatives markets, and event contracts may be structured as swaps. But “futures market” and “prediction market” are not synonyms. Futures contracts trade under defined specifications and are commonly associated with exposure to an underlying commodity or financial variable; event contracts pay according to whether a specified event occurs. The actual contract terms—not the label alone—determine what is being traded.

The CFTC’s futures glossary describes exchanges as marketplaces where buyers and sellers trade futures and options under established rules. It also cautions that glossary definitions do not express the Commission’s view on legal significance or trading strategy.

How to compare a poll, price, or odds figure
- Identify the input. Is the number based on survey answers, traded event contracts, sportsbook odds, or a derivative tied to an underlying market?
- Check the timing. Note when the poll was fielded or when the market price was observed, and how close that date was to the event’s resolution.
- Read the terms. For a poll, consider the sample, field dates, question wording, and survey method. For a market or wager, examine the outcome definition, fees, payout, and settlement rules.
- Assess market conditions. For a prediction market, liquidity, bid/ask spread, participant access, and fees can affect how informative a quoted price is.
- Keep the claim in scope. A single election comparison cannot establish which method is better for other elections, sports, economic outcomes, or events.
Risks and oversight for event contracts
Event contracts are financial products, and speculation can result in losses. The CFTC advises customers to review fees, risk, payout and settlement terms, and who determines settlement. It also recommends checking whether the entity is registered and warns about unregistered entities and counterfeit apps. Do not assume that every site using the phrase “prediction market” has the same oversight, protections, access, or product availability.
In a 2024 proposed rulemaking, the CFTC discussed concerns about information used to form prices in political event contracts, including reliance on polling and other sources whose processes may be opaque or not scientifically reliable. That was the agency’s rationale in a proposed-rule context; it is not a settled finding that polling or all political event markets are unreliable. Check the current status of a provider and the exact contract rules before trading.
Which source should you use?
Use the source that answers the question you actually have. A poll is relevant to what a surveyed population reports; a prediction-market price is a signal from trading in a particular event contract; sportsbook odds describe a wager under an operator’s rules; and a futures quote reflects a defined derivative position. For forecasting, comparing several independent signals can be more informative than treating any one number as the answer.
