Apple TV 4K is a physical streaming box: connect it to a television or compatible display with HDMI, connect it to the internet, and use apps to watch video, listen to music, play games, and access other services. It is separate from both the Apple TV app and Apple’s Apple TV subscription service, so you do not need this box just to watch that service on a supported device.
What Apple TV 4K is—and what it is not
Apple TV 4K is a streaming media player, not a television set or a cable box. It sends video and audio to a connected display over HDMI and provides an interface for apps and online services. Streaming and many Apple services require internet access; an Apple Account is needed for relevant purchases, rentals, or online use.

The similar names refer to three different things:
- Apple TV 4K: Apple’s physical hardware box.
- The Apple TV app: An app that provides access to supported Apple content and services, with features varying by device.
- Apple TV: Apple’s subscription streaming service, featuring Apple Originals and other content depending on current offerings and region.
Apple says its subscription service can be watched in the Apple TV app on supported devices, so the Apple TV 4K box is not required to subscribe or watch. See Apple’s Apple TV overview and its guide to watching on smart TVs and streaming devices.

What the box does
Once connected, Apple TV 4K lets you install and use supported apps for streaming video, music, games, and other services. Its hardware can output video at up to 2160p (4K) at 60 frames per second, and Apple lists support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG, as well as Dolby Atmos audio. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every app or title will use those formats. Actual playback depends on the content, app, display, network, and region.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
To watch in 4K or HDR, you need a compatible 4K/HDR television or display, suitable content, and a reliable internet connection. A display that does not support those formats cannot show them, even if the box supports them. Apple’s technical specifications detail supported formats and equipment requirements.
Current Apple TV 4K configurations
Apple’s current specification page describes the third-generation Apple TV 4K, which Apple Support says was introduced in 2022. Apple lists two configurations:
Rank #2

- Cloud gaming, no console required – Stream Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Outer Worlds 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, and hundreds of games on your Fire TV Stick 4K Select with Xbox Game Pass and Luna via cloud gaming. Xbox Game Pass subscription and compatible controller required. Each sold separately.

- Wi-Fi 6 support - Enjoy smooth 4K streaming, even when other devices are connected to your router.
| Configuration | Storage | Networking and smart-home features |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | 64GB | Wi‑Fi 6; no Ethernet or Thread listed for this configuration |
| Wi‑Fi + Ethernet | 128GB | Wi‑Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, and Thread |
Both configurations list an A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Bluetooth 5.0, an IR receiver, and a built-in power supply. The extra storage is a capacity difference; Apple’s specifications do not establish that it improves streaming picture quality. Ethernet can be useful if you prefer a wired connection or Wi‑Fi reception is unreliable where the box sits. Thread is relevant if you have a compatible smart-home setup. Check Apple’s current specifications and third-generation tech specs for details.

- A television or compatible display with an available HDMI input.
- An HDMI cable. Apple requires one for the connection and sells it separately.
- Internet access for streaming and online services; use Wi‑Fi or, on the Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration, Gigabit Ethernet.
- An Apple Account for relevant Apple services, purchases, or rentals.
- A 4K/HDR-capable display if you want to watch compatible content in 4K or HDR.
The Siri Remote is listed as included. Apple’s remote specifications are for a particular generation, so verify compatibility before buying a replacement or spare: Apple Support’s Siri Remote specifications.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Is Apple TV 4K worth considering?
It is most relevant if you want a dedicated streaming box for an existing television, want access to supported apps through Apple’s interface, or need the box’s particular video, audio, or smart-home capabilities. If your television already has the apps and features you need, the Apple TV subscription service can also be watched through the Apple TV app on supported devices, without buying Apple TV 4K hardware. App features and content availability vary by device and country or region; some smart-TV versions of the app may not offer every feature available elsewhere.
Choose between the two configurations based on connection and smart-home needs, not an assumed picture-quality difference: the Wi‑Fi model has 64GB, while Wi‑Fi + Ethernet has 128GB and adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread.
