An Apple threat notification means Apple believes you were individually targeted by mercenary spyware. Apple calls these high-confidence alerts, but says its investigations cannot establish absolute certainty. Verify the alert by signing in directly to account.apple.com, then follow Apple’s guidance and seek expert help. Do not click links or share passwords or verification codes in a message claiming to be from Apple.
What an Apple threat notification means
Apple says it sends these notifications to people it believes may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware, a category of unusually sophisticated and expensive attacks aimed at a small number of people. Apple has historically associated such targeting with people including journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats; those examples do not define every possible target.

Apple describes its alerts as high-confidence, while acknowledging that its investigations cannot provide absolute certainty. The company does not publish its detection criteria, explaining that disclosure could help attackers evade detection. An alert is therefore serious, but it is not a complete forensic report: Apple says it does not attribute the attacks or notifications to particular attackers or geographic regions.

Apple says that since 2021 it has sent threat notifications multiple times a year and has notified users in more than 150 countries in total. These are Apple’s own figures, not independent verification of individual targeting or the number of attacks. Apple also says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by mercenary spyware.

How to check whether an alert is genuine
Apple says notifications may appear on an iPhone Lock Screen and in Settings, arrive by email at addresses associated with the Apple Account, or appear as a banner at the top of account.apple.com after you sign in. The format can vary by device model and software version. The safest check is to open a browser yourself, enter account.apple.com, and sign in to see whether Apple’s notification appears there. Don’t rely on a sender name or email address alone.
Apple says its threat notifications never ask you to click a link, open a file, install an app or configuration profile, or provide your Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone. If a message asks for any of these things, do not follow its instructions. Go to the account website directly instead.
Apple’s support article, published August 13, 2026, says targeted users are notified directly on iPhone and by email from Apple Threat Notifications ([email protected]). Delivery details can change and vary, so confirm through account.apple.com rather than treating that address as proof by itself.

What to do if Apple says you were targeted
- Use Apple’s alert as your starting point. Read and follow the guidance included with the notification. Do not delete or forward suspicious messages as a way of verifying them; check the account site directly.
- Contact an expert support service. Apple recommends Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline for rapid-response assistance and says it is available around the clock. An outside organization cannot know what triggered your particular notification, but it can offer advice tailored to your circumstances.
- Review account and device security. Use a strong Apple Account password and two-factor authentication, keep devices updated, and enable Stolen Device Protection. Apple also recommends a device passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.
- Consider Lockdown Mode. Apple recommends enabling it for notified users. It is also an option for someone with good reason to believe they may be individually targeted, even without receiving a notification.
Apple lists the Consumer Reports Security Planner for other emergency cybersecurity needs. It is a general resource; Apple specifically points recipients of threat notifications to Access Now’s helpline.
Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown Mode is an optional, high-friction security setting Apple designed for the small number of people at elevated risk from highly sophisticated digital attacks. It reduces potential attack surface by strictly limiting certain apps, websites, and features. Apple says the tradeoffs affect areas including connectivity, device management, FaceTime, Mail, Messages, Safari, and WebKit; some normal experiences may not be available.

For iPhone, Apple’s documented path is Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. Apple says the feature is available on supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch operating systems, and that later operating-system releases add protections. Check the current requirements and settings for your device before enabling it. Apple’s iPhone guidance says all of your devices need Lockdown Mode enabled for complete protection, and recommends updating them first so they have the complete set of protections.
For most people, Apple presents routine security practices as the baseline; Lockdown Mode is a risk-based choice rather than a setting it says everyone needs. If Apple has notified you, or you have a credible reason to think you are personally targeted, the added restrictions may be worth the inconvenience.

Security steps Apple recommends for everyone
- Keep devices updated with the latest available software.
- Protect devices with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.
- Use two-factor authentication and a strong Apple Account password.
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection.
- Install apps from the App Store.
- Use strong, unique passwords and passkeys where available.
- Avoid links and attachments from unknown senders.
These are baseline protections, not a guarantee against targeted spyware. Apple’s notification guidance does not establish that consumer antivirus apps, diagnostic tools, or other products can detect or remove mercenary spyware; don’t treat them as substitutes for expert assistance.
