Apple Stores reportedly received sealed boxes labeled “Do Not Open Until October 8,” but the shipment does not confirm that new devices have arrived or that Apple has announced a smart-home launch. MacRumors reported the boxes ahead of a scheduled update to store product presentations; their contents and any connection to rumored products remain unconfirmed.
What are the “Do Not Open” boxes for?
MacRumors reported on October 1, 2026, that Apple retail stores had received confidential boxes earlier that week. The stickers said “Do Not Open Until October 8,” the date the report said stores were preparing to begin new product presentations.

The boxes are believed to contain visual merchandising materials—items such as updated labels, graphics, or product-layout materials used to refresh a store display. The report did not describe an Apple statement or an inspection establishing what was inside. The label and timing point to a planned store update, but do not show that the boxes contain products.

Do the boxes confirm new Apple smart-home products?
No. MacRumors said the materials might be related to iPhone Duo, but considered a link to rumored smart-home products more likely because of the timing and the boxes’ confidentiality. That is a theory about the display materials, not confirmation of the products or their release.

The rumored products mentioned in the report were an Apple smart-home hub, a new Apple TV 4K, and HomePod mini 2. MacRumors tied the possibility of an October 13 smart-home push to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, while noting that it was unclear whether October 13 referred to an announcement or a launch. Apple confirmation was not supplied in the report. Read MacRumors’ October 1 report.
What is known about the timing?
- October 8: The reported date on the box labels and the scheduled start of new store product presentations.
- October 13: A date associated in the report with a possible smart-home push, based on other reporting; whether it would mean an announcement or product launch was unclear.
These are reported dates, not an Apple-announced launch schedule. A store presentation change can precede a product announcement, but the shipment alone does not establish that one will happen on either date.

How does the current HomePod mini fit in?
Apple already sells a HomePod mini. MacRumors’ product guide describes the existing speaker as able to control HomeKit-compatible accessories and serve as a home hub. That context does not establish the features, price, availability, or release timing of a rumored HomePod mini 2. See MacRumors’ HomePod mini guide.
