PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose based on the full cost and how much carrier flexibility you need—not the phone’s advertised monthly payment. Buying outright or using Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) leaves the iPhone unlocked; carrier installment financing through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon locks it to that carrier until it is paid off. And buying through Apple does not necessarily mean missing a carrier promotion: Apple says many carrier offers are also available in its stores.
Start with the decision that matters: total cost or flexibility?
Compare what you will pay for the phone and service over the period you expect to keep the deal. A large carrier credit can lower the device cost, but it may require a qualifying plan and monthly bill credits over a long installment term. If you leave early, change plans, or pay off the phone, the value you actually receive may be lower than the headline offer.

Apple is usually the more flexible route when you want an unlocked phone or may switch carriers. A carrier deal can make sense if you already want that carrier’s qualifying plan and expect to keep it for the full credit term. Neither retailer nor carrier is automatically cheaper: compare the exact model, trade-in, plan, fees, and time you will remain on the service.
Compare the buying paths
| Purchase path | What happens to the phone? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple, paid in full | Apple says the iPhone is unlocked and can be used with a carrier that supports it. | Upfront cost, trade-in value, and whether the model supports your carrier. |
| Apple Card Monthly Installments | Apple says the iPhone remains unlocked while you pay over 24 months. | Approval, taxes and shipping, and the card’s variable APR on those charges. You select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon at checkout. |
| Carrier installments, purchased at Apple or from a carrier | Apple says an iPhone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon is locked to that carrier until paid in full. | Installment term, qualifying plan, trade-in rules, credit schedule, payoff terms, and service commitment. Many carrier offers are also available at Apple, but confirm the exact offer and conditions. |
| Apple Upgrade lease | This is a Klarna lease, not a purchase installment: return the iPhone in good working condition at the end of the term to close the lease. | 12- or 24-month term, payment for your exact model and configuration, return condition, taxes, trade-in, and early-termination charge. |
Apple’s purchase help explains the lock distinction in its iPhone shopping help. Its iPhone buying page says many carrier promotions are also available at an Apple Store; availability and requirements depend on the particular offer.

How to compare a carrier promotion with Apple
Use the same phone, trade-in, and time period
Write down the net device cost after the trade-in and any immediate discount, then add the required service cost for the period you expect to stay. Include activation or upgrade fees, taxes, any down payment, and the credits you may forfeit if you change plans or leave. Compare that total with Apple’s price using the same trade-in and a service plan you would actually choose.
Do not treat monthly credits as an upfront discount
A promotion paid as monthly bill credits delivers its advertised value over time, subject to the offer’s conditions. Find out what happens if you cancel service, change to a lower plan, pay off the installment early, or trade in a phone before the credits end. The key question is not just “How much off?” but “How much of that amount will I receive if my plans change?”

A current AT&T example illustrates the trade-off
AT&T’s published 2026 offer terms list up to $1,200 off iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with specified trade-ins, an AT&T Premium 2.0 plan or higher, and a 36-month, 0% APR installment. AT&T lists that plan at least $100 per month for one line before taxes, fees, or discounts. Its terms also list up to $930 off iPhone 17 with specified trade-ins and an Extra 2.0 plan or higher, listed at least $80 per month for one line before taxes, fees, or discounts. These are conditional maximum credits, not a total-cost comparison; see AT&T’s offer terms for the current requirements.
In those published terms, AT&T says tax is due on the phone’s full retail price, lists a $35 activation or upgrade fee, and requires trade-in completion within 30 days. Reducing the plan can reduce or stop credits; canceling service stops credits and makes the remaining device balance due. Offers can change without notice, so confirm the live terms before you buy.

Build a simple total-cost worksheet
Fill this out for each offer using your actual trade-in quote and intended service period. Keep one-time costs separate from monthly costs so the advertised phone payment does not hide the cost of the required plan.
| Cost or condition | Apple route | Carrier offer |
|---|---|---|
| Phone price after trade-in or immediate discount | Enter your checkout total | Enter device cost before monthly credits, then account for credits you expect to receive |
| Service plan over your comparison period | Enter the plan you would choose | Enter the qualifying plan cost and the full period you must keep it for credits |
| One-time charges | Enter taxes, shipping, and any down payment | Enter taxes, activation or upgrade fee, and any down payment |
| Financing or lease terms | ACMI: 24 months, subject to approval; taxes and shipping are outside the 0% installments. For Apple Upgrade, record lease payments and return obligations. | Record installment term, APR, payment due, and remaining balance if you leave early |
| Credits at risk | Record any offer-specific conditions | Estimate credits that could be lost if you cancel, change plans, or pay off early |
| Flexibility and exit | Record whether you need an unlocked phone or may switch carriers | Record the carrier lock and what you owe if you exit before payoff |
For a fair comparison, use the same service period in both columns. A carrier plan cost is not an incremental phone charge if you would pay for that exact plan anyway; it is relevant when the promotion requires a pricier plan than your alternative. If the deal’s credit schedule or early-exit treatment is unclear, do not count the full advertised credit as guaranteed savings.

Which route fits your situation?
You may switch carriers or want an unlocked phone
Favor paying Apple in full or checking eligibility for ACMI. Apple says both routes leave the iPhone unlocked. If you finance through a carrier installment program—even while buying from Apple—the phone is locked to that carrier until payoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou expect to stay with the carrier for the full credit term
Compare the carrier offer’s net device cost with the cost of keeping its qualifying plan for the same period. A credit-heavy offer may suit you if the required plan already fits your needs and you are comfortable with the installment and its exit terms. It may be poor value if you would otherwise choose a cheaper plan or leave before credits finish.

You upgrade often and accept returning the phone
Apple Upgrade may suit someone who wants a lease rather than ownership and is willing to return the phone in good working condition. Apple’s September 2026 announcement lists iPhone 18 Pro lease payments of $49.99–$100.03 per month for 12 months or $34.99–$70.01 per month for 24 months, before taxes and trade-in credits. Those advertised ranges vary by model and configuration and are not a complete cost comparison. Review the iPhone 18 Pro announcement and lease terms for the exact configuration and return requirements. Early termination may carry a substantial charge.
Know what Apple financing and leasing mean
ACMI is financing, not a carrier installment
Apple Card Monthly Installments spread eligible iPhone purchases across 24 months at 0% APR for the installment itself, subject to approval. Apple says the phone remains unlocked, though you must select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon at checkout. Taxes and shipping are not included in the 0% installment and are subject to the card’s variable APR. Check Apple’s ACMI terms for current eligibility and conditions; terms can change.
Apple Upgrade is not the old iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple announced that Apple Upgrade launched in the United States on July 28, 2026, and that it would no longer offer the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments in the U.S. Do not assume those older program names are current purchase choices. Apple’s current pages describe Apple Upgrade as a Klarna lease with 12- or 24-month iPhone terms; the device must be returned in good working condition to close the lease. See Apple’s U.S. launch announcement and confirm current terms before enrolling.

Make the purchase at the retailer that offers the better fit
The retailer alone does not determine the financing or promotion. Apple says carrier offers may be available in its stores, while carrier installment financing remains carrier financing even if the phone is purchased through Apple. At checkout, verify the exact model, trade-in, eligible plan, installment term, credit timing, lock status, fees, and what happens if you leave early.
Apple offers free online Personal Setup and trade-in. Consider which seller’s setup and support process works better for you, but do not treat convenience as a substitute for calculating the service and device cost. Prices, trade-in values, carrier promotions, and financing terms can change; verify the live offer before committing.
