Apple’s documented Mac feature is Spotlight, not “SpaceLight.” Apple’s current Mac User Guide describes Spotlight as built-in search for apps, files, email, messages and other content, with tools for actions such as calculations, conversions, previews and Quick Actions. The available official material does not establish a separate Apple feature or announcement called SpaceLight.
What changed in Spotlight on Mac?
Apple’s current Mac User Guide documents Spotlight as more than a way to launch apps or find files. From the search interface, users can open results, locate files in Finder, preview items with Quick Look and run Quick Actions. Spotlight can also handle calculations, unit conversions, dictionary lookups and searches of clipboard history. Where Siri AI is available, Apple also documents asking Siri from Spotlight.

Apple Developer search results from June and July 2026 describe developer-facing changes involving natural-language search across indexed app content and making app-indexed content available to Foundation models. The developer page was not accessible for reviewing details, so those search-result descriptions do not establish how the capabilities work, which apps support them or which users can access them.

How to use Spotlight
- Press Command-Space bar to open Spotlight.
- Type a name, phrase or question. Results can include apps, files, email, messages and other indexed content.
- Use the arrow keys to move through results, then press Return to open the selected result. Depending on the result, you can also locate it in Finder, preview it with Quick Look or choose an available Quick Action.
For a quick calculation, unit conversion or dictionary lookup, type the relevant query into Spotlight and inspect the result. Clipboard history can also be searched there. The exact results and available actions depend on the content and features enabled on the Mac.
How Spotlight indexing works and what it means for privacy
Spotlight searches a local index of content on the Mac. Apple Support says the index stays on the device and is not shared with Apple or other devices. Indexing takes place during device setup, after a software update or upgrade, and as data on the device changes.

Apple says initial indexing can take hours or even days, depending on how much data is on the device. That is guidance about a possible duration, not a promised average. Later updates to the index are faster. Apple says indexing tends to finish sooner when the Mac is idle and connected to power; Wi-Fi or Ethernet can also help when data needs to be downloaded.
Why Spotlight may not find something
A missing result can have several causes: the relevant content type may be disabled in Spotlight settings, the index may not yet include recent or newly downloaded content, or Spotlight may need to rebuild an index for a particular location. Apple recommends these checks:

- Check search settings. In System Settings, open Spotlight or Siri & Spotlight, depending on the macOS version, and confirm the relevant content type is enabled.
- Install available macOS updates. Apple lists updating software among its troubleshooting steps for unexpected Spotlight results.
- Reindex an affected location. In Search Privacy settings, add the disk or folder to the excluded locations, then remove it. This prompts Spotlight to index that location again.
Permissions can prevent some content from being reindexed. A rebuild may also take hours or days when the location contains a large amount of data, so results might remain incomplete while indexing is underway.
